News Bites: '10 Things' Heads to TV, Haters, and More
Filed under: Comedy », Romance », Thrillers », Deals », Exhibition », Home Entertainment »
A long time passed since 10 Things I Hate About You hit the big screen. Julia Stiles got Bourne, Joseph Gordon-Levitt has become a powerhouse on the indie scene, and Heath Ledger ... we know what became of him. I'm guessing that his death and reminiscing moments about his work is what inspired this next piece of news: Ace Showbiz reports that ABC Family is going to make the Shakespeare-inspired film into a television series, with the film's director, Gil Junger, signed on to helm the pilot. In it, Kate and Bianca Stratford will face "their new high school environment." I don't know if that means freshman hitting the big leagues, or the girls moving to a new zip code, but I can only hope that they come up with a new love interest for Kate. There's only one Patrick Verona.Hater has been on a long road to production, but it looks like the time is finally here. Almost a year ago, Guillermo del Toro had signed on to direct the adaptation of David Moody's novel. But then the Hobbit swept him away and left Hater director-less. Have no fear, Moody fans, the pic is back on track. Variety reports that the director of The Orphanage, Juan Antonio Bayona, will helm the feature when it kicks into gear next year. So, if you liked the one-two producer-director punch of del Toro and Bayona, this should be a treat!
Hit the jump for a few exhibition news bits for the next few months.
Universal is a 'Hater'

Back in December, Guillermo del Toro was tapped to direct an adaptation of David Moody's novel, Hater. But as you well know, del Toro got a bit sidetracked recently by this whole Hobbit business. Now he's gearing up to head to New Zealand for four years, and that leaves Hater without a director.A new writer hasn't been tapped yet, but a plan is in place. Variety has finally confirmed the project, originally announced by JoBlo, and del Toro is staying on as a producer of the film. He says: "I'll carry my weight on the creative side, in choosing elements and storyboarding, but it will be up to Mark and the director we choose to execute the day to day."
The story, which del Toro says "recognizes the reality that we live in, where it is incredibly easy to polarize, to hate for gender, race, age," details a sudden increase in terribly violent assaults. However, it's not by just one person -- "In seconds, rational, controlled people become vicious killers." It sounds like either a violent virus epidemic, or mass ghostly possession.
Whatever the case -- since the adaptation is not waiting for del Toro to wrap up his epic film, we should hear more soon.
Guillermo del Toro to Direct 'Haters'

Guillermo del Toro is a busy man. Monika just told you that he is directing an adaptation of 60's spy television show The Champions. He produced The Orphanage, which is due December 28th and has been getting great reviews, including one from our own Scott Weinberg. (Check out the poster here, the trailer here, and James' interview with the director here.) He has penned a supposed-to-be-awesome adaptation of the H.P. Lovecraft novella At the Mountains of Madness. He wants to do another adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. He's got Hellboy II: The Golden Army coming out this summer, and a ghost story with ties to the Spanish Civil War called 3993 in the works. You'd think the dude would want to take a little break! But no! Joblo is reporting that the Pan's Labyrinth director has signed on to direct a new project called Haters, based on David Moody's novel -- Hater. The plot synopsis sounds mighty sweet. Here's some snippets -- "Society is rocked by a sudden increase in the number of violent assaults on individuals. Christened "Haters" by the media, the attackers strike without warning. Their attacks are brutal, remorseless, and extreme...In seconds rational, controlled people become vicious killers...You can no longer trust anyone, no matter how well you think you know them...By the end of today you could be a killer. By the end of today you could be dead." Dead! Kind of sounds like a zombie movie without zombies, doesn't it? Sounds like something del Toro could smash out of the park. It's currently sold out at Amazon -- has anyone read Hater?
