Only thing I don't get about this poster is why they would put the words 'Coming Soon' underneath? Why not show off the film's July 18th release date?

For those who haven't stopped in to hang out here for awhile, The Dark Knight has been a subject of debate lately. First, Elisabeth wrote a Fan Rant on the selling of that Joker toy, and how some folks are cleaning out the supply, jacking up the prices and selling it on eBay -- profiting off Ledger's death and the increased demand for a collectible. Meanwhile, I pondered whether Ledger may get himself an Oscar nod out of this role; how it's about damn time we start recognizing the wonderful performances in these fanboy flicks, instead of focusing solely on special effects and sound editing. So feel free to chime in here or on those other posts. Unlike the poster, we'll tell you The Dark Knight arrives in theaters on July 18.

Gallery: The Dark Knight

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Discuss: Could Heath Ledger Land an Oscar Nod for His 'Dark Knight' Performance?

Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Awards, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels

When Heath Ledger passed away earlier this year, he left the planet as one of this generation's great actors; a guy who battled many personal demons off the screen, for sure, but one who gave everything to the role. And while we won't get to see his latest creation on the big screen until July 18th, early footage shows Ledger's version of Batman's arch-nemesis could go down as the darkest, baddest and craziest we've ever seen. My question to you, then, is: Will it be enough to land Ledger another Oscar nod come next year?

Sure, the Academy isn't all too keen on recognizing superhero movies unless we're talking about special effects or sound editing, but with bigger actors taking on riskier comic-related roles, isn't only a matter of time before one of these guys (or girls) turns out a performance worthy of a gold statue? Are these characters not meaty enough; are they not conflicted, troubled and crying out for a hug? If an Oscar can go to Javier Bardem for playing a sadistic, calculated murderer in No Country for Old Men, and Johnny Depp can be nominated for playing a sadistic, calculated murderer -- both in the same year -- I see no reason why Ledger's Joker can't be taken into consideration.

It's early still, I realize that -- but should this guy turn in the kind of performance we're all expecting, shouldn't he be recognized with an Oscar nomination? What are the chances here, folks?

Gallery: The Dark Knight

Permalink | Email this | Comments

'The Dark Knight' TV Spots!

Filed under: Action, Fandom, Home Entertainment, Movie Marketing, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels, Trailers and Clips

Two new TV spots for The Dark Knight have arrived online over at The Tube; both of which, I'm sure, are making the primetime rounds as we speak (I know one of them debuted during Sunday night's Survivor finale). The two spots (check out one above and the other after the jump) are pretty Joker-centric, with some brief comedy thrown in via Bruce Wayne and Alfred/Lucius Fox. I gotta say I'm loving Heath Ledger's performance more and more each time another bit of video arrives. It's amazing he pulled off this role, especially since most of us counted him out when his casting was first announced: "Heath Ledger as The Joker? Really? Seriously? Is that a joke?" Well kudos to him -- I, for one, cannot wait to see this whole thing play out on the big screen.

Question: Will you be seeing The Dark Knight in IMAX or in a conventional theater?
You know, I have always had a dislike for the collectible business. Most children of the 70's and 80's probably do, as we were generally left crying because our Transformers or Star Wars collections were incomplete. My own bitterness arises from not being able to get a figure of April O'Neill, the redheaded reporter and best friend of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. That was the first time I learned that adults collected these things -- and not to play with, but to sell for ridiculously high prices. And I learned it courtesy of my dad, who knew guys hoarding April O'Neill figures, and who wouldn't cough one up to a fellow cop for his young, geeky daughter.

So, this story from the New York Post reporting Heath Ledger's Joker figure selling out everywhere makes me sad and angry. It's not that kids are being denied a Joker figure (I really do not think young children should be anywhere near The Dark Knight, and I'm pretty liberal about kids watching dark movies), but that Ledger's death is being shamelessly exploited on eBay. Because you know as well as I that those figures wouldn't be flying from the shelves if Ledger hadn't passed away earlier this year. I have no doubt it would be popular, but no one would be buying 30 of them. They wouldn't be going for $55.00 a pop. (Actually, it looks like that's some hyperbole, as a brief glance suggests it's more in the range of $30-$40, but it's still the principle of the thing. Sell enough and you've turned a tidy profit.)

Ledger's untimely death is the kind of thing that collectors cackle with glee over. You know that ten minutes after the news hit, there were men and women saying "Sweet, all that Dark Knight stuff is going to be really valuable!" How lucky for them his final film was one that actually produced collectibles and not, say, Brokeback Mountain or I'm Not There. At the same time that Warner Bros is treading oh-so-lightly on all things marketing in order to stave off screams of exploitation, eBay is doing brisk business.

Now, before you flame me, I don't mean all collectors are bad. There are geeks who collect because they love, and there are those who collect purely and utterly for profit. Nor do I deny there is a happy medium between the two -- everyone hopes their still-sealed Chewbacca pays for retirement. I have friends who lovingly buy two of everything, one to save in packaging and one to rip open and mess with. Even I, who sniff at their obsessiveness, broke down and bought a NECA "convention exclusive King Leonidas" last year in San Diego. (Not long after, I laughed at myself and opened it. Weeks later, I damaged him, thus proving why my future children can't count on my geekdom to provide a college fund.) But there's a line of nastiness, and it usually consists of using an untimely death to make a small fortune. It is reprehensible and cheap, because somewhere out there, individuals are finding pleasure in Ledger's death. I don't care who it is, how they died, or when -- no one should ever find a reason for joy in a death. Especially when that reason is financial gain. If the thought makes me a goody-goody Pollyanna, so be it.

It's a small thing and it shouldn't bother me, but it does. Ledger's family approved the figure, and I think they were right to do so. Like most anticipating the film, I have been very vocal in believing that all should proceed as if Ledger was still alive. Don't dwell on the fact that he isn't. But I can still wish for world to act with a little class once and awhile. What I hope is that Mattel produces enough to completely drive down the value -- thus making a fool of anyone who paid an obscene price, and anyone who's got 30 of them to unload. Not only is it a fitting plan for the Joker, but it's a good dose of karma.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

'The Dark Knight' Trailer, Chock Full O'Forshadowing

Filed under: Action, Warner Brothers, Fandom, Newsstand, Movie Marketing, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels, Trailers and Clips

Finally, the wait is over! The second full length trailer for The Dark Knight is up and it is all kinds of cool. Unlike the feeling left by the two Incredible Hulk trailers, I feel like there's plenty of scary Joker goodness waiting for me in the theatre.

Maybe it was the long wait, maybe it's just that there's a point of excitement one reaches, but this trailer seems kind of ... understated? I don't want to say flat, because it is anything but -- yet compared to the explosions and shrill laughter of the first, this one suddenly brought Batman back into the real world. When the bootleg was leaked, my e-mail box was flooded with people complaining that Ledger was too "gritty" and "realistic" in his performance. I don't share the complaints, but the Joker is definitely missing the eerie, superhuman element. I like it, but I can see why many might not.

Love the foreshadowing surrounding poor Harvey Dent. I'm already half in love with the handsome D.A.; I can't wait to see how Nolan handles his fall from grace. Watch it, and rave about it. Or complain. I think this might be the trailer that divides an audience -- I'm watching the comments to see! The Dark Knight hits theatres July 18th.

Last night we took the crew to see Iron Man. You can read James's and Scott's reviews of the film, but I'll just add that this movie ROCKS, and in case you're a parent debating whether to bring your kids to see it, I felt that what violence is in the film is mostly cartoonish, Indiana Jones-level stuff, so if your kids can handle those films, they'll be fine. All of my kids were engaged in the film from start to finish, and there was nothing in it that scared them as much and that damn sea lion in Happy Feet.

But I digress. Before the film, of course, they had the usual array of trailers (Speed Racer, Indy 4, Prince Caspian), and one of them was for The Dark Knight. Now, I've generally been avoiding seeing or reading too much about The Dark Knight, so this was the first time I'd seen the trailer. And my reaction to it was ... I don't know if I want to see this film. Much as I love Christian Bale and Aaron Eckhart, I just found the scenes of Heath Ledger as the Joker oddly painful to watch.

Gallery: The Dark Knight

We were at Sundance when the news of Ledger's death broke, and the response among the film journalists there was not what you'd normally expect from people who work in this business to news of another tragic celebrity death. People were stunned, shell-shocked; there were a lot of red eyes around, even among the men, some of who normally tend toward the snarky end of the spectrum. I had to walk out of a room where the TV was showing the typical media blow-out reaction to a celebrity death -- so much tabloidization, so much capitalizing on what was, for his family, just a terrible tragedy.

But that was back in January, so I figured, by now, I'd be fine with seeing Ledger in this role. And after seeing the trailer I'm thinking, not so much. It probably seems stupid, but it was just painful to me to see him in that dark of a role, knowing the downward spiral his life took in the aftermath of that film. Not that I think anyone can say with certainty that playing the Joker directly caused Ledger's death, but the role is so dark, so twisted, and Ledger, in the trailer, seems to so embody that darkness, that I was just a bit overwhelmed by it. And honestly, I just don't know if I want to sit through an entire movie of watching him in that role.

I know, I'm a dork, and it's probably just me, but I wondered -- is anyone else having this reaction to The Dark Knight trailer? Or are you just so excited by the film in general, and in seeing Bale reprise the role of Batman, that seeing Ledger as the Joker just doesn't bother you?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Rocchi Review -- With David Fear of Time Out New York!

Filed under: Tribeca, Festival Reports, Podcasts, Cinematical Indie, The Rocchi Review: Online Film Community Podcast

What are the most anticipated movies at this year's Tribeca Film Festival? But one of the first questions to pop up in the aftermath was how this would affect the film -- could viewers stomach his portrayal in the same way? It's impossible to eradicate thoughts of his death from the mind as the news continues to grow and audiences finally break through the doors to see for themselves.

However, according to Cinema Blend, there have already been screenings, and they've presented problems for the dark and sure-to-be-awesome film. One scene in particular has been bothering audiences to the point that it might be completely removed from the film.

Hit the jump to find out more, but move on if you want no details about the brief scene.

Gallery: The Dark Knight

Quoted from CB: "The scene involves Ledger's Joker character pretending to be dead and being pictured in a body bag. Apparently the aftershock of Ledger's unfortunate death are such that many in the screening reacted rather badly to this moment."

While I can understand and imagine how eerie and disturbing that scene must be, it would be a shame to cut part of his performance due to what happened. If this was a lighter and more upbeat film, a scene that became darker due to later circumstances would be a shame, but this is The Dark Knight. His role is eerie, and is sure to be uncomfortable no matter what we see. Heck, I get goosebumps from the "Why so serious?" poster I included with the post. This is what Heath created, and I hope we can experience it in full.

But what do you think? Should the scene be cut out for sensitive audiences? Or, should it remain intact?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Joker To Reappear For April Fool's

Filed under: Action, Warner Brothers, Fandom, Movie Marketing, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
Harvey Dent's viral campaign has ended with a rather disappointing announcement that Dent is running for D.A. But, no doubt, this political campaign has been leading up to something more.

I was one of the thousands who received a voice mail from Dent Sunday afternoon urging me to help him fight the Citizens for a Concerned Gotham, the latest viral site to be launched. They've been very busy slandering poor Dent in the press as a corrupt and media crazed inquisitor. (I have to say, when my cellphone announced it had a voice mail, I was super excited. And then let down when it turned out to be Aaron Eckhart and not someone I actually knew.)

He's holding a meeting on April 1st, 3pm -- presumably Eastern time -- to answer all the questions of concerned citizens. The problem is, the Joker has also launched a new site, Clown Travel Agency. A departure is announced for April 1st, 3pm. He's also told followers that they'll hear from him again on April Fool's Day.

More: Update on Dark Knight Viral Sites

More: The Joker's Gag is Complete -- April Fooled

My gut says the Joker and Dent will be having a confrontation -- and that the handsome D.A. is going to be losing his looks. Would they spoil that kind of story on a mere viral campaign? Maybe we will just be getting a new trailer and Two-Face will remain a mystery until The Dark Knight screens. At any rate, keep checking the sites of Harvey Dent and the Clown Travel Agency. Of course, we'll post what happens here on Cinematical.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

New Images from 'The Dark Knight'

Filed under: Action, Warner Brothers, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels, Images

Then came rumors last month from AICN that Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell would ALL step in to replace the actor. Well, the site was right! Reuters reports that the filmmaker has confirmed the involvement of all three actors.

According to a statement from producers: "Since the format of the story allows for the preservation of his entire performance, at no point will Heath's work be modified or altered through the use of digital technology." They follow with: "Each of the parts played by Johnny, Colin, and Jude is representative of the many aspects of the character that Heath was playing."

For once, it seems like Gilliam's notorious bad luck will pay off into something special. In the words of the man himself: "I am delighted that Heath's brilliant performance can be shared with the world. We are looking forward to finishing the movie and, through the film, with a modicum of humility, being able to touch people's hearts and souls as Heath was able to do."

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Doctor Parnassus Website Throws Up First Still

Filed under: Drama, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Movie Marketing, Images

The pic above is a smaller, cropped look at the hi-res still that was just thrown up over at the official website for The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Hearing about any of Terry Gilliam's films can make one ooh and ahh over the possibilities, but there's nothing quite like the first good look at what he's molding with those amazing filmmaker hands of his -- especially when it's a morality tale about selling precious things for selfish means.

I think what I've always loved about Gilliam isn't the creative worlds he creates (those are great, don't get me wrong), but rather some of the small moments within them. A lot of people didn't like Tideland, but there was something about Jodelle Ferland's Jeliza-Rose talking to those doll heads that instantly charmed me.

Anyway, after all the trouble recently with the passing of Heath Ledger, I'm really glad that the project lives on -- for Gilliam, for Ledger, and for us, the eager fans out there.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Film Clips: Of Heath Ledger and the Autopsy Report

Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy, Columns, Film Clips
Jeff Wells has stirred up a sh*tstorm of controversy over on Hollywood Elsewhere with a post about the Heath Ledger autopsy report. In a post bluntly titled, "Heath did it to himself," Wells says, in part:

New York's medical examiner report was predictably dry and succinct and non-judgmental, but the implication is that Heath Ledger didn't care to calculate or remember which prescription drugs he'd taken, much less assess their combined effect upon his body. You can say "accident" over and over but the blunt answer is that Heath did it to himself. Like I wrote the day he died. A tree didn't fall on him. Actions have consequences.

The post has generated the predictable array of comments, from the sympathetic to the angry to the truly asinine. Which all goes to show, if nothing else, the impact the death of a celebrity can have on people who never even knew him. Of course, with the release of the autopsy report today, no matter which way it came down, people were going to make judgments and jump to conclusions they shouldn't be jumping to. It's easy to judge Ledger, even if his death by overdose was accidental, because he should have known better, right? It's easy to look at what we (think we) know of his life and say, hell, the guy had everything going for him, what the f*ck? That's what most everyone was saying around Park City on the afternoon of January 22, as we all got out of press screenings to the news of his death. Shock. Profound sadness. Disbelief. Vehement indignation and anger, even.

I didn't know Heath Ledger personally, and I doubt very much that even those who knew him best know what was in his head in the days (maybe weeks or months) before he died. But here's what we do know that's indisputable fact: he died with a lethal cocktail of drugs -- Oxycontin, Vicodin, Xanax, Valium, and a couple of sleeping meds -- in his system. And I know this much to be true: Nobody takes that much of that combination of drugs because they're in a happy place in their lives and just want to feel a nice high. You want to get a little comfortably numb, you maybe smoke a bowl of weed. You want to numb yourself completely and obliterate whatever sh*t you have going on that feels too painful to deal with at the moment, you look to those kinds of drugs. And Ledger, by all appearances, numbed himself too far, and went past the point of no return.

If things had swung the other way -- if the housekeeper had come in to see if he needed anything, or the massage appointment had been a couple hours earlier --we'd maybe have had an "Owen Wilson"-type situation, where Ledger would have been rushed to the hospital, had his stomach pumped, spent some time on the psych ward to assess if he was suicidal or just dangerously foolish, and six months from now he'd have been on Letterman talking about his close call and how it made him reassess his priorities. But that's not how it all played out, and the real tragedy of that, of course, is not to the people who enjoyed watching Ledger perform in his films and would have loved to see him for many more years, but to his family, especially his young daughter.

Here's the other thing I know: It's completely idiotic for anyone to sit in judgment of Ledger and assume he didn't care about himself or his daughter or he wouldn't have taken all those pills. I call bullsh*t on that. Depression and anxiety and sleep deprivation are all, as one commenter on Wells' site noted, real motherf*ckers, and anyone who says otherwise has never wrestled with those particular demons. Here's a true confession for you of the type you don't normally see on a movie blog -- I don't know what Ledger was personally going through, but I do know what I've been through in my own life in struggling with depression and anxiety and insomnia over the past couple years. It's not something most people talk about in polite or casual company, but a lot of people deal with those issues.

When you're in mired in depression and anxiety (and we don't know what exactly was going on with Ledger, but the fact that he was numbing with some hard core pain meds and anti-anxiety drugs is pretty revealing), the simple truth is, you aren't always capable of thinking straight. And as anyone who's ever taken Oxycontin in particular can tell you, once you take one (or two, or more) of those little white pills, your ability to judge whether it's safe to mix in this or that other drug is compromised. Oxycontin and Xanax together, in particular, put you in a very blissed out state of utter non-functionality and impaired judgment -- there's a reason you're not supposed to drive or operate machinery while taking them. If (and this is a big if, as there's supposedly an investigation into how Ledger got the drugs to begin with) Ledger had legit prescriptions for those drugs, it might have been relatively easy to rationalize in a f*cked up state that it was safe to mix them, or to forget when or how much he'd taken. It happens, folks.

And there but for the grace of God, or Buddha, or whatever higher power you choose to call it, go I and a lot of other people who've been down the winding rabbit hole of depression and anxiety. If he was having sleep deprivation issues on top of that, as the use of sleep meds would indicate, I can tell you from personal experience that rabid insomnia coupled with depression and anxiety creates a Big Bad Wolf of a mental state that has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with who you really are, your morals, your ethics, your ability to make sound judgments when you're in a normal state of mind, or how much you care about your children, your partner, your parents, your friends, or anyone else. To assume that just because he had money, fame as an actor, and a beautiful daughter, Ledger was somehow immune to the effects of whatever personal sh*t he was going through is the utmost in ignorance.

Maybe if Us Magazine, and Perez-freaking-Hilton, and TMZ and all the paparazzi asshats didn't hound people who have famous faces into the ground every time they have a problem, it might perhaps be a little easier for people who work in a very public profession to seek help before they get to the point that they're medicating into an early grave, accidental or not. Say what you will about how it was Ledger's choice to be an actor -- no one deserves the kind of shit celebrities have to take on a daily basis from the gossip sites and magazines. If any one of us had to endure the kind of scrutiny these celebrities face for every single move they make, every wrong turn they take (and hell, who among any of us hasn't had screw ups in our own lives? Please.), do you honestly think it wouldn't have an impact?

I read what I see about Ledger on some of these sites, and the comments from their readers, and most of it just turns my stomach. The judging, the who-cares-about-the-poor-rich-celebs attitude, the "he did it to himself" nonsense. Utter bullshit, all of it, and much of it from people I've seen at film festivals tossing back drinks like there's no tomorrow -- you think those five or six or seven free drinks at the film fest parties aren't a form of self-medicating? The hypocrisy is revolting.

Enough, already. The autopsy report is out, the ruling is accidental overdose. It could have (and has) happened to countless other people who weren't Heath Ledger. Maybe -- I hope -- his death will be a wake-up call to "normal" people wrestling with their own demons to seek help, or at the least, to be more cautious in their own self-medicating. More likely, not. In any case, can we please knock it off with the throwing of stones in glass houses, folks? Let Ledger rest in peace, and let his family grieve and heal without the mean-spirited judging of how he met his tragically early end.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

'The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus' Website is Up

Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Casting, Johnny Depp, Cinematical Indie
Despite the fact that nobody knows for sure how the film will be finished, the website for Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus went live today. Sure, it only features the title, director and "Coming Soon," but at least it's a good sign that the film will go on ahead. Unless you've been living in a bubble, you likely know that production on Parnassus shut down a few weeks ago due to the sudden death of its star, Heath Ledger. As of yet, the film doesn't seem to have restarted shooting, but there have been rumors and hints about how Gilliam plans to continue a film without its principal actor. First, we heard that Johnny Depp would replace Ledger completely. Then, Parnassus co-star Christopher Plummer mentioned the use of CGI as a solution.

Now there's another option. According to Quick Stop Entertainment, the film is definitely going forward and is definitely going to keep Ledger's footage, as a tribute to the actor. According to Aint it Cool News, additionally, is word that another actor could actually replace Ledger for his unfilmed scenes, because Ledger's character actually transforms into another person once he enters some kind of magic mirror. So, Depp or some other star could be cast as Ledger's "'other side' personae" as AICN calls it. Anyway, now that we have that website to check in with, we might have a better source for updates as they come.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Fan Rant: The Heath Ledger Video

Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy, Fandom, Fan Rant

Long story short: A two-year-old video featuring Heath Ledger at a party where drugs were being consumed was purchased by Entertainment Tonight for a large sum of money (some are saying $200,000), and the show, as well as The Insider, planned to air the video in an attempt to "understand why Ledger died." Ledger's former PR firm sent out a mass email protesting the video, folks everywhere cried "poor taste" and ET ultimately decided not to air it. One imagines said video will arrive on YouTube within 24 hours, and at that time it will be everywhere; the secret video everyone will pretend they didn't watch.

Here's my question: Where do you draw the line? Almost everything these shows put on the air is in poor taste. So, instead of the Ledger video, they'll do 15 minutes on Britney Spears -- what she wore to the hospital, what she said to the doctor, how big her sh*t was that morning. This stuff -- this stalking of Britney Spears -- is okay. Airing a video showing Heath Ledger drinking a beer, while some dude snorts coke in the corner? Not okay. That's in poor taste. You should respect the Ledger family. What about the family of every other actor or actress who's caught doing something stupid? Where's the respect for them? There is no respect. You think the folks at ET respect Ledger or his family? They couldn't give two sh*ts about these people ... unless something they do is going to bring them more viewers. Hence, the video.

It's a pretty sick world we live in. I've watched this TMZ show on television, where the staff gets together and they write a bunch of stuff on a board. At the top of that board, it should read: How Will We Ruin Someone's Life Today? Isn't it sick to know that all of these people -- the shows, the websites, the magazines -- make all their money off humiliating other people? That that's a huge business; the business of humiliation. And then they go home at night to their wife, their significant other, their children -- and they attempt to be a good role model. " Help Jimmy with his math homework after you're done photo-shopping that pic of Britney's vagina, please."

If I were harassed as much as Britney Spears has been, I'd wind up in a mental institution. We all would. And if she does die, God forbid, it would be the media that killed her. And then how funny would it be to watch the media blame themselves for killing a celebrity? Of course they wouldn't do that -- they'd blame Britney, they'd blame her family, they'd blame her friends. They'd never blame themselves, unless they were blaming another outlet -- as if they were the good guys.

But you know who should really be blamed? Us. We're the ones with the desire to read and watch this sh*t. We feed them, and they prosper. I won't say we're the ones responsible for Ledger's death -- after all, a person has to take responsibility for what they put in their own body. But we're responsible for shows like Celebrity Rehab; we're responsible for Britney Spears going off the deep end; we're responsible for TMZ TV; we're responsible for Perez Hilton's ugly f**king face showing up on a VH1 special. We love it. We eat it up. And if you put that Heath Ledger video in front of 150 strangers, I bet at least 149 of them would watch it without thinking twice. Because it's mindless entertainment. And if it temporarily helps you forget about the fact that your life sucks, then bring it on.

We're the real addicts. And it's sad.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Gilliam to Finish 'Parnassus' with a CGI Heath Ledger?

Filed under: Comedy, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, RumorMonger, Johnny Depp
As much as I hated Terry Gilliam's last film, Tideland, I still consider him my favorite living filmmaker (Tideland was the first to completely disappoint me) and was looking forward to his next feature, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus more than possibly any other film in the works. Unfortunately, Parnassus lost its star when Heath Ledger died suddenly last week, and there was lots of talk that Gilliam's latest would be scrapped. Anyone who has followed Gilliam's career knows that would be more than tragic, because Parnassus would be the second major work of Gilliam's to go unfinished after shooting had begun (see the depressing documentary Lost in La Mancha for the story on his shut-down project The Man Who Killed Don Quixote). Well, after rumors that Ledger would be replaced by Johnny Depp, who would come in and reshoot the late actor's scenes, there is a new claim that Gilliam is going to keep Ledger's footage and continue the shoot using special effects magic.

The claim comes from Parnassus co-star Christopher Plummer, who spoke to People magazine and had this to say: "Fortunately, because the film deals with magic, there is a way, perhaps, of turning Heath into other people and then, using stills and I think they call it CGI..." Plummer, who plays the title character in the film, also mentioned that Gilliam wants to finish the film for his friend (Ledger) and dedicate it to him, too. Additionally Plummer spoke on the working conditions of the Parnassus shoot in London and on Ledger's health prior to his leaving the set, further providing for speculation that Ledger's death was of non-narcotic causes. Anyway, about the finishing with CGI Ledger, that is excellent news, and something I've been expecting to happen all along (if it was good enough for The Crow 14 years ago, it's good enough now). I absolutely loved Ledger in The Brothers Grimm (the first of Gilliam's films to somewhat disappoint me), and I can't wait to see him and his computerized clones in The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Williams Puts Films on Hold to Mourn Ledger's Death

Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, Newsstand

In my opinion, Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams were both coming into their own when Ledger passed away early last week. The day before Ledger's death, I had a chance to watch Williams absolutely kill in the Sundance flick Incendiary -- her greatest performance yet, in my opinion. Both actors (who were <strike>married</strike> engaged, but separated) were approaching super-stardom, however we're now left to track the future career of only one. And regarding her future career, People reports that Michelle Williams will put all her films on hold for an undetermined amount of time while she grieves the loss of Ledger.

The actress had just finished shooting her last scene for the film Mammuth in Sweden when she heard the bad news, and now production on Blue Valentine, her next flick, has been postponed (it was supposed to begin shooting on February 25). The film stars Williams and Ryan Gosling as a couple struggling with their marriage. A source close to the production told People, "We will hold off until she is ready. The production is in the process of sorting it out in respect to her. We're hoping she will still come back and do the film and are happy to wait. The film is tailor made for those two so of course we would want to wait. You can't get much better than them." We'll be sure to keep you updated; in the meantime, keep an eye out for Incendiary -- the gal is a powerhouse in that film.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

RIP: Reel Important People -- January 28, 2008

Filed under: Disney, Obits, Cinematical Indie

While folks still try to come to terms with how and why he died, those who last worked with him are starting to share their thoughts. Though he wasn't the last man to direct Ledger (that was Terry Gilliam), Christopher Nolan is the director of the last feature film Ledger will ever appear in ... The Dark Knight. As he notes in an article for Newsweek, Nolan is still in the editing room, piecing together the last bits of his film with the face of a young star who died too young staring back at him each and every single day.

Nolan says, "Heath was bursting with creativity. It was in his every gesture. He once told me that he liked to wait between jobs until he was creatively hungry. Until he needed it again. He brought that attitude to our set every day. There aren't many actors who can make you feel ashamed of how often you complain about doing the best job in the world. Heath was one of them."

Nolan also shared that Heath had been working on two short films at the time of his death; that, while shooting The Dark Knight, he would bring his laptop to the set and show Nolan what he was working on. Nolan continues: "When you get into the edit suite after shooting a movie, you feel a responsibility to an actor who has trusted you, and Heath gave us everything. As we started my cut, I would wonder about each take we chose, each trim we made. I would visualize the screening where we'd have to show him the finished film-sitting three or four rows behind him, watching the movements of his head for clues to what he was thinking about what we'd done with all that he'd given us. Now that screening will never be real. I see him every day in my edit suite. I study his face, his voice. And I miss him terribly."

Head over to Newsweek to read the entire tribute.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Heath Ledger Talks Joker Role Prior to Death

Filed under: Action, Celebrities and Controversy, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, Newsstand, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels

I was on a shuttle bus at Sundance when my wife text messaged me the news about Heath Ledger. By the time I made it off the bus, everyone was buzzing -- his death had hit the fest like a virus. It didn't take much time, and only a few hours later I started seeing stories from people wondering whether Ledger's death had anything to do with the amount of work he put into the role of Joker in this summer's The Dark Knight. When the New York Times interviewed him last month, Ledger admitted to locking himself in a hotel room for a month to get into character, then downing sleeping pills afterward to catch up on some much-needed rest. Though we're not entirely sure yet, it was most likely a combination of sleeping pills and other medication that did him in.

Warner Bros. has already toned down their aggressive Dark Knight marketing plan, turning the movie's official website into a make-shift shrine dedicated to the actor. So if it was this role that ultimately sent Ledger off in an unhealthy direction, why did he take it on in the first place. ComicMix currently has up an exclusive audio interview with Ledger, conducted last month, in which the actor explains why, exactly, he decided to take on the part. According to the actor, he had no interest in re-creating what Nicholson had so expertly displayed earlier, and that if Burton was directing this film he probably wouldn't have done it. But when Christopher Nolan asked Ledger to play Joker, he watched Batman Begins, saw a different angle he could take and jumped right in. You can check out the interview over here.

Personally, I think it's a cop out to blame a role in a movie for a person's death. Obviously actors and actresses take on all kinds of roles in any given year -- some of which are a lot more demanding than the Joker -- and they come away just fine. What it boils down to is the kind of person you are; how much pressure you put on yourself and what you do to alleviate that pressure. Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family this weekend as they say goodbye to a man so many people loved dearly.

Permalink | Email this | Comments
