If 'Star Wars' Met 'The Simpsons'

For those that have already seen this, you could probably disregard, but I caught this for the first time yesterday and thought it was worthy of your attention. With the Toronto International Film Festival in full swing (have you checked out our coverage yet?), movie news is pretty scarce. So, this gives us time to point you toward a few fun little nuggets hanging around on the internets. Have you ever wondered what it would look like if the opening to The Simpsons was changed to include Star Wars characters, and was set inside the Star Wars universe? Well, that's exactly what I've posted above -- a re-creation of The Simpsons opening, with folks like a young Luke Skywalker (as Bart), Darth Vader (as Homer), Obi-Wan, C-3P0, Han Solo, Chewbacca and R2D2 (as Marge and Maggie, although Ned Flanders makes a cameo as Solo and that Chewbacca looks very much like Barney). The video was created by a guy named Rich Cando, and if you're a fan of either, it's a pretty fun watch.
In related news, will Bart tease a Simpsons Movie sequel in the opening episode of the show's 19th season later this month? Apparently, during that oh-so-classic opening (as mocked in the above video) Bart will scribble "I will not wait 20 years to make another movie" on the blackboard. However, as the NY Post points out, don't go holding your breath thinking those Simpsons freaks are already knee-deep in planning a second installment. According to exec producer Al Jean, "We would only do a sequel if we believed it was a movie that had to be made, just like we did with the first one. We wouldn't want to do it just because the first one was successful, or because we wanted to make money off of a movie. We'd only do it if we had a script that we thought was great [and] there's no script at this point."
Plot Details of 'The Simpsons Movie' Emerging

So I sent my wife out to a 7-Eleven by my apartment yesterday in hopes there would be something Simpsons-related left for me to devour, and all she came back with was two cans of Buzz Cola and a couple of weird twisty straws. Looks like this is going to be tougher than I thought. Anyone manage to grab a Radioactive Man comic? How is it? Can you send me one? While the 7-Eleven/Quik-E-Mart promotion has been the talk of the town this week, some more news regarding plot for The Simpsons Movie has arrived via The Hollywood Reporter. Apparently, a 10-minute clip of the film was recently screened in London and a majority of the scenes suggested the film will carry plenty of environmental and religious themes. Not to mention there's one scene featuring Bart's private area.
Although folks have been talking up Bart's so-called full frontal nudity for quite some time now, some have suggested that you don't actually see anything. Instead, all the talk was more of a marketing ploy to get people in seats. Well, according to The Hollywood Reporter, that's definitely not the case. In describing the scene, they note (possible spoilers ahead): "Perhaps the biggest laugh was for Bart, who skateboards through town naked after being challenged to do so by Homer. After a series of scenes where strategically-placed extras and props protect his modesty, the audience gets a full view of his private parts through a gap in a hedge." Poor Bart. Speaking at a post-screening Q&A, Matt Groening said he expects some people to be a tad miffed by what they see. "In America there's someone willing to pretend to be offended by everything and so we annoy people and that's part of the appeal," he said. "It's to entertain people and also to annoy a certain segment of the audience as well."
Apart from the brief nudity, Simpsons family members will also be tackling some of the world's more pressing issues. For example, the band Green Day is booed by Springfield residents when it starts talking about the environment following a performance. Also, Lisa becomes a green campaigner and gives a lecture called 'An Irritating Truth,' based on Al Gore's Oscar-winning doc An Inconvenient Truth. But that's just the tip of the melting iceberg; I'm sure there's a lot more heading our way when The Simpsons Movie lands in theaters on July 27.
Simpsons Creator Matt Groening Talks Simpsons Movie
Filed under: Animation », Comedy », Fandom »
Simpsons creator Matt Groening recently sat down with Crave Online to discuss everything Simpsons, while also dishing a little bit of dirt on that tiny, minuscule movie coming out this summer. (Wait, there's a Simpsons movie? Do tell!) Though he didn't divulge too much information, he did note that we'll finally find out which state the Simpsons live in ... by way of a joke. However, Groening adds "Remember, I said joke." One of the great things about a feature-length film is that there's enough room for you to not get tied down to one character; Groening admitted the pic will focus on the entire family, instead of, say, only Homer.
But what about the good stuff? Will there be cursing, nudity -- will Bart crack someone over the head with his skateboard, then shove the broken pieces of wood down some pour soul's throat? Okay, we won't go that far, but those Simpsons freaks have definitely included a few things you won't see on the TV show. Says Groening, "You'll see more of The Simpsons than you really should see and probably things, people you don't want to see. Whoever you don't want to see naked on The Simpsons, you know that's who you're going to see. Sorry about Marge." Um, am I the only one who wouldn't mind seeing a little bit more of Marge? Then again, should I be even remotely excited about seeing an animated character naked? Will the FBI start tracking me now? For more with Groening (including his favorite Simpsons episode and lots of Futurama talk), head on over to Crave Online. The Simpsons Movie hits theaters on July 27.
Yet Another Simpsons Movie Teaser
Filed under: Animation », Comedy », Fandom », Trailer Trash », Movie Marketing »
Yes, another teaser for The Simpsons Movie is circulating online, this being the third official one to debut. However, it's only available in windows media right now (though I assume it will pop up on YouTube soon enough), and so you Mac users are folks who cannot get windows media to work on your cruddy computer are sh*t out of luck. But don't worry my friends, you ain't missing much. The teaser opens the same way the last one did, with that little bunny hopping across a field before cutting to the title card and then to two short clips of Homer trying to hammer a nail onto his roof with Bart alongside him.
I must say, these short bits of the film aren't really exciting me all that much. I feel as if I'm watching the coming attractions for next week's Simpsons episode, only with less footage and jokes that aren't that funny -- all physical stuff with no sharp, witty dialogue. Since the first two were all about Homer, and the third featured Bart with Homer, this leads me to believe that each character will slowly make their way in -- perhaps the next one will feature Marge, then Lisa and Maggie. It bothers me that they're trying to hype us all up by shoving five-second clips of Homer hurting himself down our throats. Give us more. Give us dialogue. Give us humor. Give us something that will actually make us laugh and want to see the movie, like, right now. So far, that has not happened -- and while I'm a huge Simpsons fan who will no doubt pay money to see the movie -- I'm afraid my excitement level going in won't be as high as I wanted it to be. Thoughts? Reactions?
