Well, it's October now, and just as all sites set their... well, sights on all things horror, Horror Squad's been ahead of the curve by covering it all year round! A-ha!
Seriously, though, as Weinberg told you, we've kicked off our Fates Worse Than Death series -- today's entry from yours truly regards that ever grisly Event Horizon. (Your suggestions are also welcome.) Peter's got the latest on the best in this week's genre discs (Trick 'r Treat, ho!), and newbie Brad McHargue keeps up the Fantastic Fest coverage with his look at Jake West's horror-comedy, Doghouse.
Mind you, the Sci-Fi Squad crew ain't slouching either, whether it's concerning their new genre DVDs of the week, their Fantastic Fest interview with Stingray Sam director Cory McAbee, their wonderfully gonzo glimpse at next month's disaster-tastic 2012, and a gallery of the downright geekiest tattoos I have ever seen.
So get crackin'! After all, this October only comes one time a year... or something.
Announcing Our October Theme: Villains
Filed under: Site Announcements », Fandom »

This past summer we decided to introduce a 'Summer Appreciation' theme to Cinematical, which included features like Our Favorite Summers and a summer-related interview series with the directors who had films coming out. Since we all (and you all) had so much fun with that, we decided to re-introduce a theme this month to not just Cinematical, but Horror Squad and SciFi Squad, too -- and that theme is ... villains!
So, beginning today and lasting all month long, we'll be shoveling out a number of villain-centric pieces across all three sites. You'll see features like Villains We Love, October's Biggest Villains, Villains with Really Stupid Plans, Villains That Wore Out Their Welcome and so much more. Over on Horror Squad we'll be launching our 31 Fates Worse Than Death series, where each day we'll be taking a look at a movie character's fate that was worse than death. Over on SciFi Squad, we'll be showing you how to make your very own Darth Vader cake, and so on and so forth.
All of this fantastic October-themed coverage will lead up to our Fifth Annual Halloween Costume Contest, which we'll unveil (in all its awesome prize-giving glory) in just a short time from now. So get pumped, get excited and definitely get your freak on -- it's October baby, and we're gonna have some fun.
What's Up at the Squads

We've some new writers shaking things up now and later at both Sci-Fi (not SyFy) Squad and Horror Squad, so this seemed like as good a time as any to shine a light on a couple of features making the rounds there.
Over on Sci-Fi: Erik updated us on the progress on a fan-made Star Wars re-creation that involved nearly 500 fans each tackling a scene, Peter Hall shared the original short film behind this week's feature-length 9, and Scott made a list of his top 100 sci-fi films of all time in the name of all that is twisting knickers.
Meanwhile, on Horror Squad: yours truly helped fill in the details regarding the shelf-sitting sequel to Cabin Fever, Peter Hall linked us to a free-for-all radio play incarnation of the clever and creepy Pontypool, and Weinberg made a list of his top 100 horror films of all time for the sake of causing ulcers the world over.
Two New 'Top 100' Lists to Get Angry At!
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I had the audacity to put together a "Top 100 Horror Movies" list, mainly because I get numerous emails, tweets, and random requests for "a few good horror movies to rent." It's awesome that people turn to me for an opinion, and so I put a lot of time and thought (about two good hours) into this list right here at Horror Squad. It's been so popular that three separate people on the Twitter have called me a moron this week.
But then I realized that I was ignoring my other baby ... the one called Sci-Fi Squad. (And I further realized that I haven't been called a moron enough this week.) And since sci-fi runs a close second to horror in my favorite genre department, well, let's just say I've seen a whole freaking lot of science fiction films. Less than some, more than most, but a whole stinking lot. This list took a bit longer than the horror one, mainly because I didn't want to omit anything that was worthy, but also because I insist on including personal favorites like Species. Yes, the hot naked horny alien movie. I dig it. And here are the remaining 99 ... over at Sci-Fi Squad.I eagerly await your incredulous gasps and challenges upon my sanity. One last time: Here's The Top 100 Horror Films of All Time, and The Top 100 Sci-Fi Films of All Time ... according to me, of course. Both crafted with love. And caffeine.
Love Horror? Live in Austin? We've Got Some Good News

Back at last year's Fantastic Fest, I was privy to a conversation between Scott Weinberg and screenwriter Marcus Dunstan about the latter's latest project (he'd just done some Saw sequels and was in town for his Feast follow-ups). It was called Midnight Man at the time, and if I could remember what it was about, I'd tell you. (Honest!) I just remember being vaguely psyched for it.*Well, the film's done now, under a new name of The Collector and accompanied by a bunch of solid buzz from genre sites all over and none other than Alamo Drafthouse head honcho Tim League himself. Thusly, Fantastic Fest and our own Horror Squad have teamed up to bring an early screening of the film to Austin before its July 31st theatrical run.
For more details on this free (!) sneak peek, head on over to Horror Squad.
*"Vaguely psyched!" - Go ahead, put that on the poster.
