Huey Lewis + Judd Apatow = Knee-Quivering Awesomeness

Filed under: Action », Comedy », Sony », Fandom »

For quite a while now, the rumor that Huey Lewis would be performing the theme song for the expectedly hilarious Pineapple Express has been making the rounds, and today... oh, today, it has come to sweet fruition, as the theme song hits first the soundtrack's MySpace profile and then my beating heart.

I can't tell you how much it tickles me to have the sax of the News accompanied by the sound of Huey uttering the word 'chronic'. Then again, I can't tell you how much I'm tickled that we're actually facing a summer movie season that will cap itself off with Huey Lewis doing the theme song for a Judd Apatow-produced, David Gordon Green-directed stoner-buddy action-comedy, followed the week after by Robert Downey Jr. in blackface. Seriously, could you have called that this time last year?

If you don't know why I'm so psyched, I've included the NSFW red-band trailer after the jump, and for those of you who are right there with me, Pineapple Express hits (snicker) on August 8th.

[God bless Spout Blog for bringing this to our attention. I'm tempted to send you guys over a basket full of pineapples just out of principle.]

Cinematical Picks: 'The Pineapple Express'

Why We Can't Wait to See It
: It's a fresh, yet classic stoner story written by Seth Rogen, Judd Apatow, and Evan Goldberg. The trailer looks funnier than hell, there's 227 references, and Huey frickin' Lewis wrote the theme song. Also, Rogen gets to not only fly through the air, but also carry James Franco out of a burning building all action hero-style.

Why It Might Do Well: Between The 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, and Superbad, Seth Rogen has been comedy gold lately. At the very least, the movie will get the loyal Judd Apatow contingent, along with those curious to see what David Gordon Green can do with comedy.

Why It Might Not Do Well: Aliens land on earth and the world ends. Realistically, it should do quite well, but it won't get as many young girls and action-hungry mens seeing it -- both Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 and Hell Ride open on the same day.

Fun Fact: The chorus of Huey Lewis' theme song for the film: "We got in trouble, we got to get out of here. I've got you, you've got me. We are as high as we can be. That's all right. How did we get into this mess? Pineapple Express!"

"Pineapple Express" isn't only a new strain of weed in the film. In real life, it's:

Get Ready for 'Graduation'

Filed under: Comedy », Drama », Independent », Deals », Distribution », Cinematical Indie »

Spring isn't just a time when things finally get sunny, warm, and bright, prying away the last grips of winter. It's also school crunch time and the countdown for graduation. For many, both in real life and on-screen, that means exams and then the final hurrah of drinking and teen shenanigans. For a select few, it means a time of crime in Mike Mayer's upcoming indie flick Graduation, which has been picked up by Truly Indie and Magnolia Pictures, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Although it may be a low-buzz indie film, there's one name that grabbed me immediately, and a few others that make this worthy of a little attention. The ever-awesome Huey Lewis plays one of the dads, along with Adam Arkin, and the young cast includes Shannon Lucio from The O.C., Riley Smith from Freaks and Geeks, Chris Marquette from The Education of Charlie Banks, Chris Lowell from Veronica Mars, and Aimee Garcia from Spanglish. Heck, I'm just happy to see Lowell in a role where he doesn't get called "Piz."

'The Pineapple Express' is Hip to be Square!

Filed under: Comedy », Music & Musicals », Trailers and Clips »

My fangirl heart went nuts last November, when a rumor went around that Seth Rogen wanted Huey Lewis to record music for Pineapple Express. When he popped up in the ever-so-brilliant Kimmel/Affleck "We Are the World" spoof, I began to wonder again. Huey still sounds great, and really, the world needs more of him. Well, I now "Believe in Love" because he is, indeed, the music man for the upcoming comedy's feature song.

I missed this the other day, but Movieweb was talking with director David Gordon Green, and got him to "perform" some of the theme song. Well, more like mumble some of the words, which really doesn't do it justice. The lyrics of the chorus are: "We got in trouble, we got to get out of here. I've got you, you've got me. We are as high as we can be. That's all right. How did we get into this mess? Pineapple Express!"

Originally, Seth Rogen was looking for the "Power of Love," but Green says it is more like "Back in Time." As long as Huey performs it, instead of David, I bet it'll be great. Now we've just got to see if they've Lewis-ized it any more. I still think a spoof of "I Want a New Drug" would be perfect for this flick. But I'll settle for "Pineapple Express" and a lot of alto sax.

VIDEO: Jimmy Kimmel is F**king Ben Affleck!

Filed under: Fandom », Home Entertainment », Trailers and Clips »

I crashed pretty much right after the Oscars last night, but I convinced my wife to leave the TV on in bed in order to watch a little of whatever Jimmy Kimmel was going to do for his post-Oscars show. And, to my delight, he chose the time to seek his revenge on girlfriend Sarah Silverman and her "I'm f**king Matt Damon" music video. Oh yes, Kimmel took his video -- "I'm f**king Ben Affleck" -- to the next level. Not only did it open with a Brad Pitt cameo, but by the time it was over, a group of people were singing in a "We are the World" format; folks like Don Cheadle, Huey Lewis, Robin Williams, Joan Jett, McLovin', Lance Bass ... and Harrison Ford. Yes! Harrison friggin' Ford driving a car with a bumper stick that read, "Honk if you're f**king Ben Affleck." I don't know how in the world they convinced Mr. Serious to appear in this thing, but nevertheless the entire thing was a riot.

Check out the video above. And in case you missed the Silverman/Damon video that started this whole thing, you can view it after the jump. Enjoy.

Seth Rogen Meets Huey Lewis and The Power of Love, Part Two

I love you, Seth Rogen! (I also must give the love to our editor, Erik Davis, who gave in to my envious whimpers and let me take this news piece.) Now, why am I feeling the love? Hollywood Insider says that the hottest geek around recently had lunch with one of the best men to come out of the '80s. (At Ford's Filling Station in Culver City, if you're curious.) Perhaps this is the true reason for the comedian's appeal... The topic of conversation: Rogen is getting ready for the action-comedy Pineapple Express, which stars him and James Franco as a stoner and dealer who go on the run after pothead Rogen sees a cop kill someone, and he wants dear Huey to write and perform the film's theme song.

Please, God, let this be true. If this is it, please let me know. And to any of you abominable Huey Lewis and the News naysayers out there -- zip it! EW's source says: "Seth's looking for something in the vein of Power of Love." Yes! The sap-free, funky theme from Back to the Future. NO, not the Celine Dion song that sinisterly tops Google searches of "Power of Love." The deal isn't complete, but I can't see any reason why Lewis wouldn't take this on. It's so perfect for him. But if, for some terrible reason, my dear Huey had to back out and break my heart, there's always the option to use his old material. At the very least, Rogen could grab himself the rights to I Want a New Drug. Feeling the power of [Huey Lewis] love yet?

I'm not sure my heart could take the suggestion that follows, but it's worth a shot -- Rogen, if you're reading this, please nab Steve Perry as well, get a Journey reunion going, and give the world more power ballads, pretend instrument playing, and vertical synthesizer pounding.
