New 'Hellboy II' and 'Watchmen' Updates!

For those of you itching to check out a little bit more of Hellboy II: The Golden Army, the film's official website has been updated with some new pretty cool concept art, including an image of the Big Baby Gun (which, might I add, is pretty devilish looking). In addition to all the concept art, you can also slide over to some blogs from director Guillermo del Toro, hear Mike Mignola talk about the film and enjoy a few other fun film-related things. Here's a bit of a synopsis, taken from the site, in case you need to know more about this highly-anticipated sequel: "After an ancient truce existing between humankind and the invisible realm of the fantastic is broken, hell on Earth is ready to erupt. A ruthless leader who treads the world above and the one below defies his bloodline and awakens an unstoppable army of creatures. Now, it's up to the planet's toughest, roughest superhero to battle the merciless dictator and his marauders. He may be red. He may be horned. He may be misunderstood. But when you need the job done right, it's time to call in Hellboy (Ron Perlman)." Hellboy II:The Golden Army arrives in theaters on July 11, 2008.

Additionally, and moving onto another comic-related property, the Watchmen movie site has been updated with some new pics of The War Room, as it's called. Here's how it's described on the site: "It's a huge space. We used this room frequently for meetings during pre-production. Surrounding the many seats and long tables in the middle of the room, all the walls are covered and sectioned off into individual scenes – all the concept art, visual reference and any other related materials are grouped together for display." And that's no joke, there are tons and tons of photos, sketches, all kinds of stuff -- I'd get dizzy walking through there, but I'm sure the folks working on the film know each and every piece by heart. One image, of director Zack Snyder pointing to a photo on the wall (see below), shows off the character designs in the background. Pretty groovy; head on over there to check it all out. Watchmen hits theaters on March 6, 2009.

Crazy "Predalien" Pics from 'Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem'

Not for nothing, but if I was going to do something really cool like merge a Predator with an Alien for the first time, I'm not sure I would reveal a ton of pics of the thing before the movie comes out. Ya know, leave a little to the imagination -- tease people, make them cough up the dough to see more. But I'm not in charge, and since these crazy photos just arrived courtesy of USA Today, it's my job to bring them to you. That said, USA Today has a gallery full of movie stills featuring the new Predalien, a mix-up job of the Predator and Alien that looks absolutely terrifying. Seeing this photo reminds me of Wednesday's South Park episode, where the Alien and Predator wreak havoc in imagination land. Too bad this thing wasn't around yet; the boys would've had a field day.

Looking for some fun Predalien facts? How about this one: "Unlike the original aliens, the predalien doesn't lay eggs, which are then transported by a 'face hugger.' The new creature can just regurgitate in its victim's mouth." Yum. Talk about using a bit too much tongue. Directed by Colin and Greg Strause, the brothers are intent on making this one "as serious and dark as the originals." According to them, they've cut back significantly on the special effects, saying, "You're not going to see 50 digital creatures running around. We want to bring the franchise back to basics. That's what made them so frightening in the first place." I totally agree, and I truly hope the brothers score a hit with AVP2. What do you think of the Predalien? Is it spooky enough? Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem arrives in theaters Christmas Day. (Leave cookies out for Santa? Check. Open presents with the kids? Check. Watch a Predalien regurgitate into its victims mouth? Triple check!)

EXCLUSIVE: 'Things We Lost in the Fire' Photos

Pictured Above: Halle Berry and Benicio Del Toro star in Things We Lost in the Fire.

And I don't know about you, but it looks like Benicio Del Toro lost some of his hair gel in this fire. Cinematical has just received four exclusive photos from the upcoming drama Things We Lost in the Fire, directed by Susanne Bier and starring Halle Berry and Benicio Del Toro. The film centers on Audrey (Berry), a woman whose life was shattered following the death of her husband. While attempting to pick up the pieces, she decides to help out her husband's good friend (Del Toro), a lawyer, who's hit some hard times, by inviting him to live with her and her two kids. Together they navigate their ups and downs, while forming a bond that will ultimately set them both on the right path. Personally, I find this on-screen pairing to be a fascinating one, and with the fabulous acting talents of Del Toro by her side, I'm expecting Berry to up her game and churn out a winner. You can check out the pics in the gallery below -- Things We Lost in the Fire arrives in theaters on October 19.

EXCLUSIVE: Images from 'Lions for Lambs'

The good folks over at UA/MGM were nice enough to give Cinematical an exclusive look at images from one of this fall's most anticipated films, Lions for Lambs. The images were released in conjunction with a brand new contest over on YouTube in which folks are asked to upload a 90-second video discussing an important social issue; one they're passionate about. The winning video will get the chance to help choose which charity receives $25,000. We're all passionate about something (personally, my video would have to do with autism) -- so here's your chance to speak your mind and, at the same time, help the lives of so many people. Lions for Lambs stars Robert Redford, Meryl Streep and Tom Cruise, and the film is due to arrive in theaters on November 9. I've included the official synopsis below, as well as our exclusive photo gallery. Enjoy.

"Robert Redford, Meryl Streep and Tom Cruise star in LIONS FOR LAMBS, a powerful and gripping story that digs behind the news, the politics and a nation divided to explore the human consequences of a complicated war.

Directed by Academy Award(r) winner Robert Redford, the story begins after two determined students at a West Coast University, Arian (DEREK LUKE) and Ernest (MICHAEL PENA), follow the inspiration of their idealistic professor, Dr. Malley (REDFORD), and attempt to do something important with their lives. But when the two make the bold decision to join the battle in Afghanistan, Malley is both moved and distraught. Now, as Arian and Ernest fight for survival in the field, they become the string that binds together two disparate stories on opposite sides of America. In California, an anguished Dr. Malley attempts to reach a privileged but disaffected student (ANDREW GARFIELD) who is the very opposite of Arian and Ernest. Meanwhile, in Washington D.C. the charismatic Presidential hopeful, Senator Jasper Irving (CRUISE), is about to give a bombshell story to a probing TV journalist (STREEP) that may affect Arian and Ernest's fates. As arguments, memories and bullets fly, the three stories are woven ever more tightly together, revealing how each of these Americans has a profound impact on each other and the world."

First Pics of De Niro and Pacino from 'Righteous Kill' Arrive Online!

Actors Robert Deniro (L) and Al Pacino arrive at the Tribeca Film Festival screening of 'An Evening of Chinese Coffee and Conversation' May 8, 2003 in New York City. (Photo by Lawrence Lucier/Getty Images)Is it bad that part of me doesn't care whether Righteous Kill turns out to be the crummiest, most overly-hyped piece of garbage this side of the equator? Is it wrong for me to say that I'll probably enjoy it for the simple fact that Robert De Niro and Al Pacino will finally -- after all these years -- be able to share some quality screen time? And is it horrific of me to believe that these two guys could play hop-scotch for an hour and a half, and I'd still leave the theater with a smile on my face? Probably not, since I have a feeling a lot of you are in the same boat as I. I think. Yup, thanks to some dude named Sean Henri, we get a first look at De Niro and Pacino together on the set of Righteous Kill. As of now, Henri only has two pics up on his blog (although he does promise more), in which both De Niro and Pacino can be seen walking up to what appears to be an apartment door, as well as one showing them standing in front of a Tow Away Zone sign (which is the pic you see to the right of your screen -- click on it for a larger version, courtesy of Sean Henri).

Directed by Jon Avnet (who helmed the still-unreleased Pacino flick 88 Minutes), and written by Inside Man scribe Russell Gerwitz, Righteous Kill follows two veteran detectives (De Niro, Pacino) who team up to track down a serial killer. The film also stars John Leguizamo, 50 Cent, Donnie Wahlberg, Brian Dennehy and the very adorable Carla Gugino (who I just happen to have a major crush on). Martin Scorsese is also rumored to have a cameo in the film as Lt. Winnfield, although nothing official was ever announced. But it wouldn't surprise me in the least if he showed up for a brief scene just to have the opportunity to square off in a room against his old pal and a guy who, surprisingly, has never starred in one of his films. Go figure there, huh? Anyway, enjoy the pics and look out for Righteous Kill to hit theaters sometime next year.

More Cast Revealed in New 'Valkyrie' Photo

*Click on photo for larger image

Although Superman hasn't returned ... yet, director Bryan Singer has been hard at work on a film that's temporarily removed him from the comic book world and placed him right smack in the middle of World War II. The Daily Mail has published the first photo featuring the seven men who plotted out a mission to assassinate Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944. In front of the men -- and printed off Google Maps -- is their ill-fated plan. Is it just me, or do these guys look like they mean business? Pictured from left are actors Kevin McNally, Christian Berkel, Bill Nighy, Tom Cruise, Terrence Stamp, David Schofield and Kenneth Branagh.

Apart from the photo, The Daily Mail also provides a brief bio for each of the men. Unfortunately for each of the seven, since this was such a dangerous plot, if they were to fail it would most likely cost them their lives. And, as we all should know -- spoiler alert -- they were not able to kill Hitler. Thus, reading the ways in which each man perished was rather, um, depressing. With a screenplay from Nathan Alexander and Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects), Valkyrie is set to arrive in theaters on June 27, 2008.

Angelina Jolie is 'Wanted' for Some Sexy Photos

Now that's what I'm talking about! I believe this one photo single-handedly illustrates and combines every male fantasy into one: Hot girl ... on a red sports car ... holding two powerful weapons. The "American Dream" has officially come true! Personally, I love Angelina Jolie when she takes on a badass role -- and, quite frankly, I wish she would slip them in there more often. The Tomb Raider flicks -- eh? -- but she was fantastic in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and judging from these newly-released photos over on JustJared, her latest film don't look so bad either.

What you're looking at is a photo from Jolie's newest flick, Wanted. Based on a comic book miniseries (written by Mark Millar and J.G. Jones), Wanted tells the story of a "mama's boy" (James McAvoy) who learns that his recently-assassinated father was part of an elite group of assassins. Following dad's death, the boy is recruited by the same organization and trained (by Morgan Freeman who, in case you did not know, never stops acting) to follow in his father's footsteps. Jolie plays a jewel thief named The Fox. Director Timur Bekmambetov will make his English-language debut off a script penned by at least four different people (including Michael Brandt). Wanted is currently set to speed into theaters on March 28, 2008.

New Pics of Anna Faris as a Playboy Bunny

We've been hearing a lot about Anna Faris' new project, in which she plays an ex-Playboy Bunny who moves into the lamest sorority house on campus and tries to transform a group of ducks into swans. I'm not sure if we've mentioned the title yet (because it went untitled through a ton of casting reports), but it's called House Bunny -- and it stars Faris, Dana Goodman, Emma Stone, Kat Dennings, Katharine McPhee (yes, Idol runner-up), Rumer Willis, Sarah Wright and Colin Hanks. Well Coming Soon managed to get a hold of some tasty images that show Faris dressed up in a pink bikini top with "boy shorts" (is that what they're called?) underneath.

She appears to be standing on top of a station wagon, holding a hose, with bubbles falling down. My favorite aspect of the pics is that there are these two guys in the background -- just staring at her -- as if to say, "What do you want from us -- this is our job." And I like how they both have sunglasses on so that no one can see them staring at her ... um, fanny. I imagine this is either some sort of dream sequence, or Anna's character is hosting one of those sorority-related car washes. Either way, these photos will most certainly show up in the dreams of lots of guys later on. For those just dying to get more Faris, the gal is currently appearing on HBO's Entourage as herself, although I'm not sure how many episodes she signed on to do. House Bunny is set to arrive in theaters sometime next year.

News Bites: 'The Dark Knight' Hires Clowns, 'Wall-E' Character Posters and The Best Michael Bay Video Ever

Clowns and robots ... need I say more?

  • That Dark Knight teaser website has been updated with a slew of clown photos; all of which can also be accessed through a new site, Rent-a-Clown.com. Readers can now scroll through seven pages of regular folk with their faces painted like the Joker, while listening to that annoying circus music. If I had to take a wild guess, it looks like the photos were taken during ComicCon, and they're now being used as part of yet another viral promotion for next summer's The Dark Knight. A message above the images reads: "Hire any of these clowns to entertain you at the public gathering of your choice. They will do almost anything for a laugh." Anything? Really? Oh, I can think of some things ....
  • And speaking of viral marketing, Pixar has already started building hype for next summer's WALL•E by releasing a few character posters during ComicCon. You can scroll through five of them here. Once you're done with that, head on over to Buynlarge.com -- apparently this is the website for the fictitious robotics manufacturer that created the robots featured in the film. There's plenty of detail stuffed into the site, but you can scope out pics (as well as read about their individual specialties) of four different robots: SALL•E, GAR•E, NANC•E and WEND•E. You can read much more about Pixar's next flick in our ComicCon coverage of the Disney/Pixar Presentation.
  • Since I just got finished telling you about clowns and robots, it's only fitting that I leave you with one story that involves both. Some dude posted a short film up on YouTube which follows director Michael Bay (portrayed by a hilarious actor) around town while he attempts to convince people to go see Transformers. I've watched it three times now, and the thing just keeps cracking me up. These guys are so out of their minds. For those of you in the office, there's a bunch of foul language included within, so keep that in mind. My favorite line: The actor playing Bay runs up to the camera and says, "I just got done banging my assistant in a giant pile of cash." Yeah, that about gives you an idea of where this one is heading. Enjoy. [via Defamer]

'Cloverfield' Heads to NYC with Another Title Rumor

We've been receiving emails all morning from folks who've discovered that Cloverfield (aka that mysterious J.J. Abrams-produced monster flick) is now shooting scenes on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Of course, this now means my lazy ass will need to stop by tonight after my Superbad screening to see what's really going on, but based on the pics coming in, it looks like folks have dropped a ton of concrete on a car and scattered the street with debris as if something monstrous had just moved through. In the meantime, you can scope out some of the damage here and here, and stay tuned to Cinematical for more updates once I'm able to check out the scene for myself.

Wait, we're not done yet. Since it's a new day, Cloverfield has been given another title. Contrary to me wanting them to just call it The One Where I Punch J.J. Abrams in the Face, some internet MacGyvers are saying that the film might be called Overnight. Apparently, some lawyer who's worked with Abrams is registering names with something -- I dunno, nor do I care. We do know, however, that three teaser posters were released at ComicCon. All of them featured the same image of the Statue of Liberty without a head, but two of them were titled: Monstrous and Ferocious Furious. Could the teasers be leading up to a new poster with the title Overnight? I'm not crazy about the name, but it would make sense since all the action appears to take place, well, overnight. Or, in the middle of the night. And if you listen to the Billy Joel song River of Dreams, it begins with the lyrics: "In the middle of the night, I go walking in my sleep. From the mountains of faith, to the river so deep." Could Billy Joel have something to do with Cloverfield? Is the river he's speaking of the Hudson River? Is Billy Joel the monster? And the plot thickens ...

IndianaJones.com Re-Launches -- Now Blasts Music at You

Before I begin, I do need to give Kevin Kelly major props for live-blogging the hell out of yesterday's Paramount panel at ComicCon. Trust me (as someone who has live-blogged a number of awards shows), it ain't that easy. When news broke that Karen Allen was officially reprising her role as Marion Ravenwood, Kevin threw up pictures from the video that was shown to the audience. Since then, a new photo has arrived (one that shows director Steven Spielberg clowning around with Allen), which you can see to the right of your screen. While we weren't totally blown away by the announcement (it had been rumored for quite awhile now), it helped solidify my anticipation for this project.

Additionally, IndianaJones.com has re-launched with a whole new look and opening theme music. Can you guess which music it is? I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot of that music in the coming months, but it won't quite hit me until I watch Indiana Jones (all 65 years of him) grace the screen with his theme slowly rising in the background. Then I'll know he's truly back. Of course Shia LaBeouf will probably ruin the moment by popping in with a one-liner or two, but it's okay. I can handle Shia if it means I get to see Indy and Marion reunite on screen for the first time since 1981. And she still looks pretty damn good, huh? I'm not sure if she'll be throwing back shots in this film like she did back in the day, but she has a smile that always brightens up the room. Now if we can just get Sean Connery to admit he's secretly going to film a cameo, we'll be good to go. Memorial Day 2008. Mark your calendar.

'Cloverfield' Finally Gets a Legitimate Poster

Well well well ... if it isn't our old friend Cloverfield popping up one more time with another vague piece of marketing material. The good news is that we can say, for sure, that this is the official teaser poster for the J.J. Abrams-produced "monster movie" heading our way this January 18, 2008. Entertainment Weekly were the lucky ones who got to debut the poster, which looks eerily similar to the one that's been floating around the internet (via a blurry cellphone snapshop), except it doesn't have the word 'Monstrous' scrawled across the top. Will it eventually be called Monstrous? Was that a fake title cleverly inserted by a fan looking to mess with us some more? Hell if I know, but this new poster -- coupled with EW's bizarre description -- is enough to drive anyone mad.

As you can see, the Statue of Liberty is missing its head, there's a huge hole in the New York City skyline (why do they always have to bust on my hometown? Can't the monster attack -- I dunno -- Orlando?). And right behind that monstrous gap is some sort of trail through the water, with the date 01.18.08 on the bottom of the page. EW gets real sketchy when it comes to telling us exactly what kind of monster attacks NYC. Check out what they say: "As for the monster itself, contrary to Internet speculation, it isn't a parasite, and it ain't a colossal Asian robot, either. (Some suspected Abrams was mounting a live-action version of the Japanese anime/manga classic Voltron. Nope.) So then what is it? Notice how they do not say anything about Godzilla, although why would Abrams make a Godzilla flick when we already had one shoddy remake back in 1998. Perhaps they're remaking it again to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the Matthew Broderick stinker? Or maybe, just maybe, this is an entirely new creature. Hopefully Abrams himself will shed more light on this over the weekend at ComicCon. Until then, enjoy ... the Statue of Liberty. Or what's left of her, anyway.

Jessica Alba's 'The Eye' -- First Photos

The first two photos from The Eye have hit Bloody Disgusting, and the first thought that popped into my head was: "Why is Jessica Alba so angry at her oven?" Yup, that's the beautiful Alba to the right of your screen (click on the pic for a larger version), and as you can see the cupcakes clearly aren't f**king done yet! When we last checked in on The Eye, Cinematical's Kevin Kelly was visiting the set; watching all those production people dress up a scene that was to be shot in the rain. Said scene was also the first shot of Alba's character in the film, and so lots and lots of work was going into making the thing sail.

The Eye has been around for quite some time now. First off, it's a remake of the 2002 film directed by the Pang Bros., and I know that this American version has been in the works for a few years. I remember watching about 40 minutes of the original and not liking it for some reason. Perhaps it just hit me at the wrong time (as some films often do), but I've always loved the story. Essentially, Alba plays a blind violinist who gets a cornea transplant that allows her to see for the first time since childhood. However, when she begins to experience visions of death dragging souls of of this world and into the next -- not only does it drive her crazy -- but she also looks to find out who owned the eyes originally. It's definitely one of Alba's most ambitious roles, and it will be nice to see her in a film where her outstanding figure is not the main focus. Not that there's anything wrong with Alba and/or her figure, but I'd like to see the girl show a little bit more range, instead of ass. I believe she has it in her; she just needs the right material. French helmers David Moreau and Xavier Palud are directing the remake off the original 2002 screenplay and a new one penned by a bunch of different people, with Sebastian Gutierrez (Snakes on a Plane) getting top billing. February 1, 2008 is when they're dropping this one. Watch out for it.

New Pics from Will Smith's 'Hancock' Arrive Online

Wanna see a bunch of pics featuring Will Smith hanging by a few wires? PopSugar now has a mini gallery of behind-the-scenes photos from the set of Smith's new film John Hancock (or is it just Hancock?). No, it's not a biopic on the first man to sign the Declaration of Independence -- instead, it's another one of them superhero flicks with a twist. In the film, which was previously titled Tonight, He Comes (wonder why that was changed???), Smith plays a down-and-out superhero who isn't feeling much love from the public anymore. He soon finds himself involved in a questionable relationship with the wife (Charlize Theron) of a PR guy (Jason Bateman) who's trying to repair his image.

Hancock is being helmed by Peter Berg (The Kingdom, Friday Night Lights); apparently the fourth choice in a line of directors who were previously attached, then bailed. That list includes Michael Mann, Jonathan Mostow and Gabriele Muccino. Back in May, Latino Review posted another one of their craptastic script reviews for Hancock, spoiling the heck out of the thing, while giving it a C+. In it, they also gripe that putting Smith in a corny superhero suit could ruin things as his character is more of an everyman than a, say, Iron Man. Well, these latest photos definitely show Smith in some sort of suit (looks like black leather with one long stripe across the chest), but it's definitely not in your face. As far as I know, Hancock will not be present at this week's ComicCon, so we'll have to wait awhile for more. As of now, the film is set to arrive in theaters on July 2, 2008.

Another 'Cloverfield' Photo Arrives Online

This time with more blur! The problem with this mysterious Cloverfield movie is that after the hype machine blew through for a period of about a week and a half, things have calmed down and no one seems to care much anymore about figuring out what the hell J.J. Abrams has up his sleeve. Folks like to play games for a little while, but there comes a time when they tire of the mind-fu**ing and simply want to know the deal. While the film's official website, 1-18-08.com, was fascinating and peculiar at first, it's slowly become rather busy and uninteresting. Oh wow, another photo to toss around with your mouse for twenty minutes! What will they think of next? It's cool; feel free to call bullsh*t on me -- after all, I am single-handedly helping to push the marketing machine forward by continuing to write about the film and its online trickery. But that's my job. And if I didn't vent from time to time, then how the hell would I fill up an entire post?

By now I'm sure you've guessed that another photo has popped over at the Cloverfield site. This one is pretty difficult to make out, but it looks like people are running in the streets and some dude in a military outfit is there to make sure folks flee to the appropriate areas. I'm not sure who's actually taking these pictures, but hopefully they'll remember to use their flash for the next one. Like the other three photos on the site, you at home have the option to move it around the page and swap it out for one of the older images. I'm not sure what the whole "photo movement" has to do with anything, except that it gives people a reason to stay on the site longer and pretend to be figuring out a clue that no one else has solved yet. As I said before, the site is becoming rather busy with all these photos, and so I imagine they'll introduce a new gimmick soon (possibly at ComicCon or shortly thereafter). Other than that, we're told this will be some sort of monster movie (Muppets Take Manhattan 2?), and it shall arrive in theaters on January 18, 2008.
