Tips for Tuesday: New to DVD on February 6

Filed under: New on DVD », Home Entertainment »

Kind of a light week, but there seems to be just a little something for everyone this Tuesday: A classic piece of stand-up comedy, the first of two war films from Clint Eastwood, a family-friendly remake of an equine classic, yet another sequel to yet another J-horror remake, a Tara Reid horror movie that went straight-to-download, a noir-esque period piece mystery and an indie comedy about the dangers of wandering eyes.

Eddie Murphy: Delirious -- OK, so it debuted on HBO and not in theaters, but it's still one of the most drop-dead hilarious comedy concerts I've ever seen. Folks of my approximate generation still use phrases from this concert in everyday conversation! Most definitely NOT the Eddie Murphy you know from Dr. Dolittle, The Nutty Professor and Daddy Day Care, but a really, really funny Eddie Murphy. Remember that guy? I sure do. Extras include a pair of deleted scenes and a 40-minute interview between Byron Allen and the normally reclusive Mr. Murphy.

Flags of Our Fathers -- The first of Clint Eastwood's two WWII stories (the second one being Letters from Iwo Jima) is told from the American perspective. Critical consensus indicates that the second film is actually quite a bit more successful -- but it'd take a lot to keep me away from a new Clint Eastwood film, let alone two. Far as I can tell there are no extras whatsoever included on this DVD, which makes me think there'll be a big, swanky 2-disc edition somewhere down the line.

Flicka -- Alison Lohman, Maria Bello and Tim McGraw star in this cuddly sweet adaptation of the old-school "girl and a horse" story. Haven't seen it, have no real plans to, sorry. Extras include a behind-the-scenes featurette, three deleted scenes, a gag reel and one of Mr. McGraw''s music videos.

Download Tara Reid's New Horror Flick for Halloween Pleasure

Filed under: Horror », Thrillers », Distribution »

So apparently Ms. Tara Reid has a new horror flick called Incubus, and you won't find it in theaters, on TV, or scattered amongst the DVD stacks. Nope, the only way to enjoy the flick, as explained last month by Ms. Kimmy V., is by downloading it from AOL Red, which I'm told is AOL's teen-centric department -- although someone oughtta tell the Red folks that Tara Reid is as much of a draw to teenagers as Ruth Buzzi is a draw to teenagers.

Directed by first-timer Anya Camilleri and written by also-newcomer Gary Humphreys, Incubus is about a group of teens (one of whom is played by Reid, giggle) who run afoul of a psychopath who has the power to control their dreams. Wow, that's completely unique. I've never heard of a horror series in which a bunch of teenagers are horrified and harrassed by a psycho with dream-powers!

Previously known as Heart Stopper, and then Nightmares and Pulse, Incubus debuts today on the AOL Red network. The price is $3.99 for a rental and $7.99 for a purchase. Interested parties may want to check out the trailer and/or the press release before parting with their cash, but hey, if Incubus is even half as hilarious as Tara Reid's last horror flick, I'd say that's $3.49 VERY well spent!

[Thanks to Movie City News for the tip. It gave me a hearty chuckle indeed.]

Film Clips: Direct-to-Download: The New Wave of Film Distrib?

Filed under: Horror », Deals », Distribution », Home Entertainment », Movie Marketing »

On Halloween, the filmmakers behind Incubus, a horror film starring perennial party girl Tara Reid, will attempt to boldly go where few filmmakers have gone before: they will premiere their film online at AOL Red*, AOL's site for teens, as a direct-to-download movie for $7.99. The plot of the film sounds kind of comedic: A medical student, played by Reid (ahem) and her friends, are stranded after a car crash and stalked by a deranged killer (I'll bet you $7.99 right now that Reid's cleavage has a starring role in the film).

Under the deal, AOL will have exclusive rights to distrib the film through their teen site before the film goes to DVD. The deal came about after the film's producer, Adam Shapiro, and his partner, were unable to secure a good deal for theatrical distribution. AOL Red is using the film's premiere as part of the relaunch of their site; Red currently gets about 4 million teen visitors a month as part of its subscription service, but relaunches in the open internet market on October 17 at b-red.com (and no, we have no idea who picked a URL that looks like "bred.com" for a website targeted at teens, but we'll just pretend we didn't notice that).
