Discuss: What Do You Think of the International 'Slumdog Millionaire' Trailer?

Filed under: Comedy », Drama », Fandom », Trailers and Clips »

It's pretty much impossible to not have some expectation of a film, whether it comes from buzz and media, your own hopes and tastes, or critical response. Hearing so many great things about Slumdog Millionaire, I couldn't help but check out /film's recent post titled: "Worst Movie Trailer Ever: Slumdog Millionaire's International Trailer." What? That film Kim Voynar called " Boyle's best film to date"? That has a supremely impressive 92% freshness? With the worst movie trailer ever?

Well, I don't know if I would say "worst" ... actually, I think I would -- not because it's the worst ever made, but because a film so good (I hear) should never get a trailer advertisement so bad. I would almost bet that whoever whipped this up actually hated the movie and wanted to curse it. /film said it best: "It feels like a 1980's film advertisement, complete with cheesy voice over, an upbeat song, and the best moments from the film edited into the worst possible order."

Go check it out and then weigh in below (note: we've included the original trailer after the jump): Do you think it does the film justice, or reflects the buzz and appreciation that it has inspired? And more broadly: When else have you seen the Powers That Be of the film advertising world miss the mark. (Like the atrocity that is the DVD cover for Saving Face.)

Two International Trailers Hit for 'Speed Racer'!

Filed under: Action », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Trailers and Clips »

Here he comes. Here comes Speed Racer. He's a demon on wheels! Good lord, I'm hooked, and I have to admit -- Speed Racer didn't really appeal to me until I saw the trailers. In case the last incarnation wasn't enough to whet your speed racing appetites, two new international trailers have hit the net.

Above, you get more of the usual -- color-infused, wild-arse racing -- one that at least briefly gives me flashbacks to Grease. (Speed Racer fans, I ask you -- which came first -- tire slashers in Speed Racer, or Grease?) That's the trailer you can check out above. After the jump, you can check out the second version. It might seem the same at first, but stick with it. Along with more dialog, you can check out Christina Ricci's pixie-bobbed Trixie. And, most importantly -- Matthew Fox's Racer X.

The film hits theaters on May 9.

'Get Smart' Gets Kinda Dumb

Filed under: Comedy », Remakes and Sequels », Trailers and Clips »

That, above, is Get Smart's international trailer. It's been circling the net like mad, and it seems like I'm not the only one who is disappointed. I loved the earlier, brief "element of surprise!" clip -- Ken Davitian's face was so non-plussed... It was perfect! I giggled when Steve Carrell's Maxwell Smart tried to get out of the phone booth. This time around, I grinned a little, and still laughed at the "surprise" clip, but the rest left me antsy.

I won't go so far as to say I hated it, but I don't have the level of excitement I had before. I'm hoping that maybe, just maybe, this is the fault of the trailer. Warner Brothers -- the original spots were great. Sure, they weren't a long trailer that showed every important scene from the movie, but maybe that's a good thing. If you can capture the feel of a film in one brief moment, and make the audience laugh and anxiously wait to see the rest, you don't need to barrage them with clips of the whole film.

The above was me trying to convince myself that it's the trailer, and not the over-all movie. I don't think I did a good job, but what do you think? Do you like this international trailer? Do you think the movie will be good?

New Mission Impossible 3 trailer

Filed under: Action », Trailer Trash », DIY/Filmmaking », Tom Cruise », Movie Marketing », Remakes and Sequels »

Moviefone has released a new international trailer for Mission Impossible 3 which kind of differs from the current teaser available, but not really. This one appears to focus more on the action, choosing to leave out the conversation between Tom Cruise and Academy Award winner (sorry, I had to say it) Philip Seymour Hoffman that opened up the U.S. version.

It's hard to tell exactly what's been added since both trailers/teasers seem to show clips from the same action sequences. Although, in this one, a really nice car blows up. Crazy.  While it's being said that MI:3 will delve into Ethan Hunt's personal life (minus the Scientology addiction), I tend to think studios gear their international trailers more towards the eye candy with a lot less story. I'm thinking maybe that's why the Cruise/Hoffman conversation was left out, but then again, we Yanks love the action too. Seeing as the film opens on May 5th, I'm guessing an extended MI:3 trailer should be popping up soon as well.

International trailer for Vendetta rocks!

Filed under: Action », Trailer Trash », DIY/Filmmaking », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek »

There's a brand-spanking-new international trailer for V for Vendetta out and, even though it shares a lot of the same footage with the ones already released, it's definitely worth a look. Sure it's in Japanese and you may not understand what's being written across the screen, but who really cares about words - check out the visuals.

The trailer itself it much shorter than the U.S. version, however the editing is fantastic, mixed to some sort of Matrix-type theme (hmm, wonder why?), it's got a hip bounce to it. Maybe it's just me, but I wish all trailers were like this; quick and to the point. I see no reason for a two and a half minute mini-synopsis. Don't show me all the great scenes - just tease them. I'm not saying the U.S. trailer for V is bad, but it sure is long. I'm curious: Do you prefer a longer trailer to a short one? After watching the shorter international trailer, would you have gone to see the film based solely on that? V for Vendetta hits on March 17th.
