Discuss: The 'Quantum of Solace' Theme Song - Love It or Hate It?

Filed under: Action », Thrillers », MGM », Sony », Fandom », James Bond », Remakes and Sequels », Daniel Craig »

So last week, the official theme song for Quantum of Solace -- y'know, that new James Bond flick -- was formally released online, and above is the music video for Jack White and Alicia Keys' "Another Way to Die." This managed to slip past us, probably because we were all still drooling over Erik's chance to comandeer an Aston friggin' Martin (no, no, 'jealous' isn't quite the word...), and now that it's out, opinions are becoming considerably divided.

On his personal blog, Bond devotee David Cornelius of eFilmCritic.com said "it's, um, not good. Really, really not good. The Coke commercial focused on the catchy hook, which was good. But the rest of the song? Not good. We're talking "Die Another Day" not good. Argh."

Devindra Hardawar of /Film feels a little less harsh about it: "It's not a terrible song (see Madonna's for Die Another Day for a good example of that), but it certainly doesn't feel like anything new for the series. It seems as if it tries to do way too much, and the song ends up feeling overstuffed in the process."

Left in the apparent, admitted minority is Devin Faraci over at CHUD.com, who likes the song, if not the video.

As for me, I dig the thing, though it's stuck stubbornly in my head over the past couple of days, but I rarely think that's a bad thing. What say you guys? Is "Another Way to Die" worthy of our favorite double-0 agent? Or would you rather they had just adopted "Something of Boris" instead?

India to Get 'Solace' Before the U.S.

Filed under: Action », Sony », James Bond », Trailers and Clips »

Quantum of SolaceHold on to your missile-launching cuff links, 007 lovers -- this bit of James Bond intelligence may leave you searching for solace in more ways than one.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the superspy's latest adventure, Quantum Of Solace, will open in India before the film has even had its U.S. red carpet premiere.

Solace, which first shows in the U.K. on Oct. 31, hits Indian theaters a week later on Nov. 7 and then bows in North American theaters on Nov. 14. The move by Sony marks the first time that a major U.S. film has opened in India before hitting theaters Stateside.

As you may remember, Solace was initially set to storm into theaters across America on Nov. 7, but Sony pushed the release date back a week when Warner Bros. decided to give a certain boy wizard the year off, pushing Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to summer 2009.

But before you decide to drop your hard-earned cash on a plane ticket to England or India for an early peek at the flick, there is some good news on the 007 front. The very retro, super sleek new music video for Alicia Keys and Jack White's Quantum theme song, Another Way to Die, hit Yahoo! today. Guess we can take some solace in that. Check it out after the jump.

Watch This: Alternate 'Quantum of Solace' Theme Song

Filed under: Comedy », Fandom », James Bond », Trailers and Clips »

So we already know that White Stripes' frontman Jack White and Alicia Keys are all set to record the latest Bond song, titled Another Way to Die, but what about those folks who missed the cut. Ya know, the songs that almost were ... or tried to be ... or pretended to care? Case in point: You simply have to check out Joe Cornish's proposed version of the Quantum of Solace theme song up above because it's just ... fabulous. Seriously, not only does he work in a number of plot points that bring us up to date on the story and the characters, but he also works in the title of the movie. I mean, sh*t, shouldn't the theme song for a movie include the title of the movie? If not, you might find people who like the name of the song (ie: Another Way to Die) better than the film's title (ie: Quantum of Solace).

But enough babbling from me -- check out the video above, listen real closely to those captivating lyrics and maybe we can get enough people together to convince Bond producers to use this somewhere in the sequel.

EXCLUSIVE: 'Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story' Poster

Filed under: Comedy », Music & Musicals », Fandom », Movie Marketing », Posters »

Cinematical has just received the first official poster for Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (click on the image above for a larger version), the upcoming comedy written by Judd Apatow and Jake Kasdan. Do I need to say more, or are you already sold? I mean, if John C. Reilly in a Jim Morrison-like pose doesn't do it for ya, we've got issues to discuss. Essentially, the film will be spoofing all those popular musical biopics, like Walk the Line, etc ..., but I take it the flick will be a major step up from the silly spoofs like Scary Movie and Not Another Teen Movie, etc .. It'll be silly, sure, but check out some of this cast: John C. Reilly, Jenna Fischer, Paul Rudd, Justin Long, Jason Schwartzman, Jack Black, just about every popular SNL cast member in recent years and White Striper Jack White as Elvis Presley.

Walk Hard follows the life and times of fictional music legend Dewey Cox (Reilly) who, throughout his turbulent (yet awe-inspiring) career, fathers 22 kids, 14 step-kids, becomes addicted and subsequently kicks every drug known to man, and falls in love with his longtime backup singer Darlene (Fischer). Somewhere along the way, he also makes friends with everyone from The Beatles to Elvis -- and stars in his own 70s Variety Show. As a big fan of everyone involved, I know this movie is going to kick major ass -- how can it not? Directed by Jake Kasdan (who also helmed the very funny Orange County and comes from the same Freaks and Geeks world as Apatow), Walk Hard is set to sing its way into theaters on December 21.

Scorsese's Rolling Stones Doc Pushed Back Seven Months

Filed under: Documentary », Music & Musicals », Paramount Classics », Distribution »

You like Martin Scorsese, right? You're a fan of The Rolling Stones, correct? Well, get ready to have your "19th Nervous Breakdown." AOL is reporting that the release date for Scorsese's Stones documentary has been pushed back. Waaay back. Seven months, to be exact. Just a couple weeks ago, Monika told you the film would be released in both conventional and IMAX theaters on September 21st. But now we won't get it until "sometime next April." What's the reason? Why can't we get no "Satisfaction?" A spokeswoman says that more time was needed to set up the promotional campaign for the film, because the band is on tour in Europe until August 26th. Isn't that a "Bitch?" I've got serious "Mixed Emotions" about this. I mean, "I Know It's Only Rock n' Roll...But I Like It!" I'll stop.

The documentary is called Shine a Light (also the title of one of my favorite Stones songs), and its concert footage was shot over two nights last fall at the beautiful Beacon Theater in New York. Guest performers for the shows included Buddy Guy, the almost impossibly cool Jack White, and Miss Dirrrrrty herself -- Christina Aguilera. The film will intersperse footage from the shows with career-spanning documentary material. Hopefully it will be as fascinating as what Scorsese did with his Dylan doc, the excellent No Direction Home. Scorsese also directed one of the greatest concert films of all time -- The Last Waltz, which documented the final show of The Band and included terrific performances from the likes of Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, and -- with a hunk of cocaine visibly dangling from his nose -- Neil Young. Scorsese has used Rolling Stones music in nearly all of his films. I'm surprised he didn't have the monks in Kundun dance to "Start Me Up." Hell, he's used "Gimme Shelter" three times -- in Goodfellas, Casino, and The Departed!

Jack White To Do Cameo As Elvis in 'Walk Hard'

Walk Hard, a mock biopic spoofing the likes of Walk The Line and Ray, has John C. Reilly playing Dewey Cox, a fictional musician with shades of Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash. Over the course of Cox's life, he crosses a lot of real-life music legends, and now we know who will be playing the role of the King. Jack White, singer/guitarist for both The White Stripes and The Raconteurs, will be stepping into the Blue Suede Shoes of Elvis Presley. What an awesome bit of news -- one of my favorite modern musicians playing one of my favorite musicians from the past! Will Ferrell and Jack Black (Jack Black and Jack White!) are also rumored to be doing bit parts. No word on who they'll be playing, but here's hoping for an appearance by Ferrell's Neil Diamond. "I wrote this song on the back of a Dixie cup!"

You probably know Jack White from his music, (White Blood Cells is a great place to start if you don't), but he has acted before, including bit parts in both Cold Mountain and Jim Jarmusch's Coffee and Cigarettes. Walk Hard also stars The Office's secretary Jenna Fischer (somewhat disappointing in Blades of Glory), David Koechner ("Whammy!"), and Saturday Night Live's razor-sharp character actress Kristen Wiig. The script was written by Judd Apatow and Jake Kasdan, with Kasdan directing. The pair have worked together before, most notably on two wonderful and sadly departed television programs, Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared. Kasdan's got a little film you should keep an eye out for in the coming months called The TV Set, a very interesting and funny look at the television business. Walk Hard is scheduled to rock and roll into theaters early next year, and as a fan of everyone involved, I can't wait.
