Jason Patric and Thomas Dekker Join 'My Sister's Keeper'
Filed under: Drama », Casting »
Last month, the Fannings dumped My Sister's Keeper, and paved the way for Abigail Breslin and Sofia Vassilieva to take over the heavy fare. Now they've got a dad and boyfriend. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jason Patric and Thomas Dekker are joining the two girls and momma Cameron Diaz in the drama (which also stars Alec Baldwin and Joan Cusack).Breslin plays a 13-year-old who sues her parents, former district attorney Diaz (heh) and fireman husband Patric, for emancipation because she was "conceived and underwent several operations" to help save the life of her cancer-ridden sister (Vassilieva). Dekker, meanwhile, plays the boyfriend of the older sister, who has survived his own fight with cancer.
I guess that they changed the script around in the last month? A reader pointed out when the Fannings left that the original story has the sisters a bit older than Elle and Dakota. That's not too hard to switch. However, it's a bit of a jump to add John Connor as older sis' beau. Perhaps they just made the boyfriend older (Dekker is 20), or switched a friend into a boyfriend? Dakota is mature, but not that mature! Whatever the case, the playing field is different now, and the drama is currently filming in Los Angeles.
Sundance Review: Downloading Nancy
Filed under: Drama », Independent », Sundance », Theatrical Reviews », Festival Reports »

Sundance Festival Director Geoff Gilmore introduced Downloading Nancy as "the most intense film of the festival." Not only is he absolutely right, but it's also powerful, emotional, overwhelming and, most importantly, extremely uncomfortable. God bless whoever takes a chance on this film and attempts to market it, honestly, to a mass audience, because Downloading Nancy is a sick and twisted rollercoaster ride that climbs fast and drops slowly ... leaving you plenty of time to absorb its raw insanity along the way.
Should this film get picked up and play in theaters at some point during the year, then I'd be completely shocked if Maria Bello doesn't wind up with an Oscar nod for best actress in 2009. Sure, it's a little early to be saying that, but this woman gives the performance of the festival -- and of her career -- as a lonely, emotionless wife on the brink of complete self destruction. There aren't many actresses who can successfully pull off what Bello does here; hers is the sort of role that comes up every once in a blue moon and completely paralyzes you for two hours as you sit and try to comprehend how in the world a person could convincingly become this tragic character just from reading a script.
Alec Baldwin: Please Don't Go See My New Movie
Filed under: Comedy », Drama », Celebrities and Controversy », Exhibition », Remakes and Sequels »
Alec Baldwin just can't catch a break lately. Monika told you about the status of his directorial debut back in January and now we're finally starting to hear more about its release. Trouble is, Mr. Baldwin doesn't want you to see the thing! In addition to directing, Baldwin produced and starred in the film, an update of The Devil and Daniel Webster. The movie wrapped in 2001, and has experienced nothing but problems since. It will finally be released this Friday, and oh dear, that's -- dun dun duh! -- Friday the 13th! If you're trying to find the film at your local multiplex, good luck. It is only being released in six cities (Las Vegas, Rochester, Fort Myers, Columbus, Albuquerque and Santa Fe), and you'll have to look for it under its new title: Shortcut to Happiness. Oh, and Baldwin's name won't even be listed as director or producer. It has been removed and replaced with an "Alan Smithee" -- style fake name -- Harry Kirkpatrick. Despite Baldwin's many talents and a solid cast that includes Anthony Hopkins as Daniel Webster, Jennifer Love Hewitt as The Devil (?), Kim Cattrall, Dan Aykroyd and Jason Patric, the film has been called "one of the greatest train wrecks of all time." Where did it all go wrong? Apparently producers didn't like the more serious cut Baldwin submitted, and they recut the film into a pure comedy. Baldwin was naturally upset. To make matters worse, two of the films investors became entangled in legal woes after they were investigated for bank fraud. On top of all that, one of Baldwin's producing partners sued him for her cut. A source close to Baldwin tells the New York Post: "Alec doesn't recommend unrecognizable films to his fans. This is not an Alec Baldwin film. He's in the movie but he has nothing to do with it. His name was taken off as producer and director six years ago, but he couldn't get it taken off as an actor." So, I have to ask ... if any of you live in one of the six cities listed above and don't mind taking one for the team -- would you check it out and tell us if it's as bad as it sounds?
New 'Watchmen' Rumors: Kate Winslet as Silk Spectre, Jason Patric as Dr. Manhattan, More!
Filed under: Action », Drama », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Casting », Fandom », Comic/Superhero/Geek »
A roster of actor names has been splashed over at Filmick, alongside what may be their roles in Zack Snyder's upcoming Watchmen movie. There's absolutely no sourcing on this -- Brendan only says that the list was sent in by a Filmick regular and that around the same time, the same list also popped up on a Russian site. We all know that the words 'Russian website' are synonymous with credibility. At the very least, the source of the list appears to be up on the latest, since Keanu Reeves' name is gone from the roster and Patrick Wilson is still there. Speaking of Wilson, if this list holds any water the film may be turning into something of a Little Children reunion -- Kate Winslet's name is now at the top of the list as Silk Spectre, and there's a general consensus that Jackie Earle Haley is a shoe-in for the role of Rorshach.
Thomas Jane is on the list as The Comedian, who had much involvement in the series with Silk Spectre, so I guess that makes sense. Jason Patric is also on the list as Dr. Manhattan and Gretchen Mol is there as Janey Slater. I like all of these names so far, so this list has my blessing. There are also some lesser known names on the list, such as Jonah Hill, who may be playing Seymour and William Fichtner, who will be playing Bank Manager. Sorry, wrong casting sheet -- he's linked to the character Detective Fine. And of course, Jude Law is still hanging around as Ozymandias on the list. Let me close by saying that again, this is blatant rumor-mongering and probably fan fiction, but it sounds like a pretty good list, I think. Here's hoping it's real. Watchmen is currently in pre-production, and aiming for a release date sometime in 2008.
Patrick Wilson Basically Confirms He's Been Cast in 'Watchmen'

It seems pretty definite to me: Patrick Wilson is playing Nite Owl (aka Dan Dreiberg) in Watchmen. In an interview with Coming Soon.net/Superhero Hype!, Wilson does everything but actually confirm the rumors. But he comes pretty darn close. Basically, through his wording of answers and his questions to the interviewer (Max Evry), he insinuates that he's doing the movie but that he's unsure if he's allowed to talk about it -- though he claims he's never been told not to. What he does mention is that the script is phenomenal writing and that the project is really exciting stuff. He also says he should be respectful and wait until everyone is on board and there is an official announcement. So, yeah, he's been cast. This will be sad news to both John Cusack and his fans, who have been hoping the actor would get the part of Nite Owl. But Wilson isn't a bad choice for the part. And Watchmen loyalists (and Cinematical commenters) are already happy enough that Keanu Reeves apparently turned down the part of Dr. Manhattan. We still have to see if the Jude Law rumor is also true (director Zack Snyder nearly confirmed him and Reeves, but now that Reeves is out, who knows?), and we still await some word on the rest of the characters' casting. We are getting some more rumors, though. According to AICN's 'Moriarty', the new front-runner for Dr. Manhattan is Jason Patric. According to actor Paddy Considine (in the forum part of his site), the part of Rorschach has gone to Jackie Earle Haley. And somewhere, while writing about these other two rumors, film ick has gotten the idea that Thomas Jane will be playing The Comedian. So when are we going to hear something about the part of Laurie (aka Silk Spectre 2)?
Downloading Nancy Uploads a Whole New Cast
Filed under: Drama », Thrillers », Casting »
We recently brought you news that Maria Bello is about to start shooting a new thriller called Downloading Nancy. While it might sound like some sort of Weird Science update where the kids download a woman from the Internet, it is actually about a suicidal wife who doesn't have the guts to do the deed herself. Instead, she hires a hitman to do it for her. To throw a further wrench into the woman's troubled life, they form a relationship which makes it hard for the man to finish his job. As of last week, Bello's co-star was to be Ray Liotta.Well, now more casting news has come from Production Weekly, and Liotta's name is nowhere to be found. The actress' co-stars are now listed as Jason Patric and Danny Huston. I'm going to cross my fingers and hope that Huston's involvement is not as another "husband of the star" -- that's getting old. However, I wouldn't get settled in these casting choices. There is still just over a week before Johan Renck is set to start filming, so there's enough time for the filmmakers to make even more changes. According to PW, William Hurt was also set to star. Now this is one hell of a melange of different actors -- Hurt, Liotta and now either Patric or Huston.
Stay tuned, we might have a whole new cast list next week!
Patric Enters The Valley of Elah

I've been a fan of Jason Patric since Kiefer Sutherland asked him the fateful question "Maggots -- you're eating maggots, Michael. How do they taste?" I'll leave it up to you to figure out what movie that's from. In the meantime, Patric continued his post-maggot career with appearances in some good films like Your Friends and Neighbors and Narc and some not-so-good ones like Frankenstein: Unbound and Speed 2: Cruise Control -- which not only sunk at the box office but also almost sunk the careers of Patric and co-star Sandra Bullock.Patric has come a long way over the years and seems to be choosing better and better roles, especially post-Narc. And now, according to production weekly, he's got another one that looks very promising -- playing alongside Tommy Lee Jones and Charlize Theron in Paul Haggis' film In the Valley of Elah (which we covered before). Haggis is adapting the screenplay from a Mark Boal article and will direct the story of a soldier's father (played by Jones) who rejects the Army's assertion that his son went AWOL during the Gulf War.
Through his investigation, the man discovers that not only is his son innocent but he may have been murdered. Patric will play a military investigator working with a homicide detective (played by Theron) investigating the case. Being in this film is a great move for Patric. Oscar-winner Haggis is an extremely talented writer/director and this roll will only enhance Patric's already impressive, if a little uneven, career. Shooting on In the Valley of Elah is expected to begin in December in New Mexico and Morocco.
Did you figure out what movie the quote is from?
Tribeca Review: Walker Payne
Filed under: Drama », Independent », Sports », Tribeca », Theatrical Reviews », Cinematical Indie »

The difference between a small-scale dogfight and a real championship dogfight in 1957 is the audience. At the former, the all-male crowd is stereotypically country-bumpkin with faces and clothes covered in dirt. At the latter, rich folks are present, including women wearing their pearls and Sunday best. The surprise isn't that each has their own demographic, though; it is that either has any enthusiasts at all. Perhaps it is the illegality that draws them in, or maybe it's that gamblers will bet on just about anything.
While I was thinking about how dog fighting would be a tough-sell for a film like Walker Payne, which stars Jason Patric as a novice of the sport, I overheard some people in the audience discussing the contrary. They claimed the picture would be more marketable if the filmmakers cut out the dramatic story and just kept the dog fighting. If there are in fact people who enjoy watching pit bulls kill each other in a ring, then that edit would certainly make sense, since the film's narrative has very little going for it.
