Jason Patric Graciously Accepts Geek Role in 'The Losers'
Filed under: Action », Thrillers », Casting », Warner Brothers », Newsstand », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Fan Rant »
We all want to meet The Losers, especially with the studio who can seemingly do no wrong (aka Warner Bros) financing the whole thing. It has already has a heck of a cast and though it has kicked off filming in Puerto Rico, they've found time to add one more: Jason Patric, who Variety reports is playing the mysterious and villainous Max. Max is the one who turns a bunch of black ops badasses into the Losers who are out for vengeance, and there's no doubt Patric can lend some gravitas to the role.Unfortunately, Variety and Patric felt the need to sour the sweet news up. The press-shy Patric sat down with with Mike Fleming in order to explain just how an actor of his caliber ends up playing a mere comic book villain. These days, it's apparently neccessary to "slum it" to keep working. Fleming laments the neccessity, noting "You know that geek validation has become a serious thing when actor's actor Jason Patric agrees to play his first real villain role in his first comic book movie."
Idris Elba and Zoe Saldana to Be 'Losers'

When Warner Bros first announced they were green-lighting an adaptation of DC/Vertigo series The Losers with Sylvain White directing, it elicited only a minor flicker of interest out of me. It's a not a lost series, per say, but it's not one that a lot of people have read and enthused about. The plotline is like any action movie you've ever seen: A Special Forces team that's betrayed by its handler, left for dead, and who regroup to seek revenge. Dubbing themselves "The Losers," they seek to remove their names off a CIA death list, and to work against a massive conspiracy involving their handler, "Max."
But now! Now it has a very respectable cast! According to The Hollywood Reporter, Idris Elba and Zoe Saldana are being recruited into the Special Forces. Elba will be playing Roque, the scarred second-in-command, an icy fellow who is motivated purely by money. Saldana will play Aisha, whose both a loose cannon and a cold-blooded killer who leaves a trail of corpses behind her. They'll join Jeffery Dean Morgan, who must have enjoyed Watchmen so much that he'll do anything DC/Warner Bros related. He'll be playing Clay, the meticulous leader.
There's still a few Losers to be cast, and color me curious as to who else the script (penned by Peter Berg and James Vanderbilt) can attract. Sure, it could be cartoony and crappy but I have a weird trust in Mogan, Elba and Saldana, and I think it's going to be worth following from this point on. Mea culpa, Warner Bros.

Meanwhile the "maybe they aren't overpaid, money doesn't heal humiliation" category, check out this Liev Schreiber quote from Details about playing Sabretooth in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. "I started to read blogs in the comic world with things like 'That's the dumpiest, most out-of-shape Sabretooth I've ever seen in my life!' They gave me a muscle suit at the beginning. I was so humiliated I thought, I've got to try to do this on my own ... I felt like I owed it to the genre to be big." Now take a moment, and be glad Fox cast someone as committed as Schreiber so that you didn't have to see Sabretooth in a rubber muscle suit.
Six New 'Watchmen' Character Posters!

It's a Watchmen week! New photos and posters are hitting the Internet this week, presumably in anticipation of the second trailer that's attached to Quantum of Solace. Yesterday Erik posted a new Rorschach-themed poster that had popped up on Yahoo! Movies over the weekend, now we have six new ones (including an extra Rorschach) to accompany it.Warner Bros. released the six character posters all across the Internet -- and we were able to collect most of them here in our gallery, except for the one the boys most want to see. Silk Spectre is over on your left, watermarked to MTV's Splash Page, but if you click her, you'll be taken to her full length version. I'm as straight as can be, but even I can't take my eyes off her latex. Wow.
Please give a visit and a nod to the other sites that were graced with these cool images -- my personal favorite of the bunch, The Comedian, was posted over at the always awesome Hero Complex (who will have more Watchmen images later today). Dr. Manhattan was posted in a tiny, low-res version at Entertainment Weekly. (Come on, where's the big version, guys?) The really cool Ozymandias poster, costarring Bubastis, debuted over at Wired. Nite Owl comes by way of Access Hollywood, accompanied there by an automatic video of Patrick Wilson. And everyone's favorite vigilante, Rorschach, got his second poster of the week courtesy of USA Today.
They really are pretty glorious to look upon. And now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to furiously exercise in order to wake up resembling Malin Akerman.

The Girls of 'Watchmen' Kick Ass
Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Thrillers », Mystery & Suspense », Warner Brothers », Fandom », Newsstand », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Trailers and Clips »
It's the 6th of November, and that means we get a brand new Watchmen video. This one comes embedded courtesy of MySpace, and hopefully it will be working better by the time you read this, as I still haven't gotten to watch the whole thing without a glitch. No, the thorny question of "Did you change the ending?!" is not addressed ... come on, they do these too far in advance to cater to our whims. No, this one is all about the girls of Watchmen -- because despite the masculine sounding title, there's girls in this story, and they kick some major butt. Watch as Zack Snyder introduce you to Silk Spectre the First and Second, as played by Carla Gugino and Malin Akerman.
The girls aren't the only Watchmen characters you can meet this week -- be sure to pop onto the official site and be properly introduced to the Comedian. He's front and center, impossible to miss, and would make a charming addition to your desktop.
New Teasers for 'Watchmen', 'Friday the 13th' and 'Twilight' Now Online!
Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Mystery & Suspense », Warner Brothers », Fandom », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Trailers and Clips »

It's online already -- and a good thing too, because I'm sure everyone forgot to set their DVR/TIVO for Spike TV's Scream Awards. While a lot of this is footage recycled from the trailer, there are some new scenes that should make you squee in excitement, clips that weren't even glimpsed at San Diego Comic Con. Admittedly, that footage is beginning to fade from my memory, but the only scene I recognize having seen before is Nite Owl and Silk Spectre kissing before a mushroom cloud. Oh, it all looks so good. I will continue to hold out hope -- after all, the the test audiences did say the film as a whole was excellent.
Additionally, teasers for Friday the 13th and Twilight screened -- both we've collected and pasted after the jump.
SDCC 08: Elisabeth Watches the 'Watchmen' Panel
Filed under: Festival Reports », ComicCon »

The Watchmen scenes were literally goosebump inducing, and so much more than an extended trailer. It was set to a really eerie choir piece (any attendees know the name of that?) and began with a close-up of a certain smiley-face button dripping with blood. We saw a more gruesome version of Vietnam, with Dr. Manhattan's incineration being just a little more vicious somehow, and an extended version of his being stripped away, intercut with Osterman assembling clock pieces, and knocking down milk bottles at a state fair. Rorschach was the center of an especially chilling scene of his examination of the Comedian's apartment, and we saw his mask in action. It looks fantastic and very organic, not CGI at all.
A Memorial Day Present From Zack Snyder -- the Minutemen!
Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Mystery & Suspense », Warner Brothers », Fandom », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Images »

If you are unfamiliar with the graphic novel (and if you are, you need to go read it now), this is a photo of the Minutemen, the original superheroes of Moore's world. From left to right, we have the Silhouette, Mothman, Captain Metropolis, the original Nite Owl, Dollar Bill, the Comedian, the first Silk Spectre and Hooded Justice.
What becomes of them, and why there are second editions of Nite Owl and Silk Spectre ... you will need to read the book to find out. I'm not making it that easy! But this really is a brilliant recreation. I haven't seen one thing from this movie that I am displeased with -- which may just mean I'm in for a huge let down. What do you think, Watchmen fans?
The First 'Watchmen' Video Journal!
Filed under: Action », Classics », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Thrillers », Mystery & Suspense », Newsstand », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Trailers and Clips »
Zack Snyder has released the first video journal for Watchmen, and it's airing exclusively over on ComingSoon.net. There are eleven more to come, each to be released on the 6th of each month, every glimpse bringing us that much closer to awesomeness or total despair.Journal #1 is all about the set construction and we get glimpses of everything from Doc Manhattan's lab to The Comedian's apartment. I'm honestly blown away by the level of detail they have achieved here. I think everyone was expecting Snyder to fill in with blue screen, as he did before, but everything has been constructed from scratch which fills my heart with joy. The CGI of Hot Gates may have been a grand sight, but there's just no replacing good old fashioned movie making. (I'm going to echo a friend of mine and say what a smart choice it was to hire Alex McDowell!)
