Legendary Pictures Pines for Jimi Hendrix
Filed under: Music & Musicals », Deals »
You might have heard that this year is the 40th anniversary of Woodstock. We've got Taking Woodstock on the way, and now we're getting a reminder that we still haven't gotten big-screen Jimi Hendrix rife with the music that made him an icon. (Like his Woodstock performance of "The Star Spangled Banner.") There was the mess back in 2006, but now Variety reports that Legendary Pictures is eager to get a biopic in the works. But, you see, they don't have the rights.Rather than doing things the logical way -- that is, getting the green light from the rights holders and then creating the project -- they're going to cross their fingers and do it the opposite way. "The company's plan is to develop the project first, then try to win the cooperation of the estate." At the very least, it would mean that Legendary would have to cook up one heck of a film to be the final victors -- winning the rights from Experience Hendrix (run by his stepsister, Janie Hendrix). But it's also one risky move -- stepping in where others have already failed.
What do you think the project will need to win the respect, and rights, from Janie? Surely, the film will have to be respectful, but it'll also have to be wonderfully cast -- hopefully with someone who knows their way around a guitar. Is there anyone who could embody Jimi in both talent and spirit and put us in a "Purple Haze"?
Hendrix Biopic? Just Kidding.

You know that Jimi Hendrix biopic that's been in the
news lately? The one that Quentin
Tarantino is totally
directing, except he doesn't actually know anything about
it? Well, it turns out that getting to the bottom of the Tarantino issue is something of a moot point, because a
British court ruled on Wednesday that John Hillman, the man who was the supposed source of the necessary song and life
rights for Dragonslayer Films' Hendrix film, doesn't actually
own them. Oops. Instead, those rights are owned by Experience Hendrix, a company run by the musician's daughter, Janie. So far, there's been no response from Dragonslayer. In fact, if you visit their website soon, you'll see the "official announcement" of Tarantino's likely involvement in the Hendrix project right there on the front page. According to that release, "Tarantino would have full access to Hendrix's music [and] likeness ... to tell the real shocking story." Or, you know, not. Given Tarantino's immediately denial, one has to wonder if the people at Dragonslayer just made this whole thing up to get a little publicity. If that's the case, it's working -- how many people had even heard of them before this debacle?
Quickhits: Greencine does Day-and-Date, Mortenson Makes Promises and Tarantino loves Jimi Hendrix?

Odds and ends for Tuesday:
- Greencine has announced a deal with Zealot Pictures and Heretic Films to become the first vendor to release a DVD and make it possible that you at home can buy the film, rent the film through mail or download it over the internet -- all at the same time! Sheesh, and all I want it to do is sing me to sleep at night. Can you make that possible Greencine? Huh? Please? The film making history is called 24 Hours on Craigslist and it's a documentary that chronicles, well, take a wild freaking guess..
- Seeing as David Cronenberg and Viggo Mortenson have a history together, it's fitting that the two will once again be teaming up on the Steve Knight (Dirty Pretty Things) penned Eastern Promises. Cronenberg, who directed Mortenson in last year's A History of Violence will once again step behind the camera. Pic is being described as a thriller that focuses on a nurse who, while investigating a child's death, stumbles deep inside the world of sex trafficking. This one has dirty, pretty and violence written all over it.
- How can we possibly go a day without following Quentin Tarantino on his quest to break Jon Heder's record for Hollywood Person Involved in The Greatest Number of Projects At One Time? This latest rumor has the bad-boy director directing a Jimi Hendrix biopic. According to the report, Tarantino will have full access to Hendrix's music and likeness, with the film supposedly going into production later this year.
