Mandalay Buys Joe Hill's 'Horns'
Filed under: Horror », Deals »
Ever head out on the town and see men with horns on their head? Usually, one would think those little things were the glued-on dealies, sold to those who like their devilish tendencies to be as blatant as possible. But in the minds of Stephen King's offspring, it's a little bit different. Variety reports that Joe Hill, son of the famous King, has had his upcoming novel Horns optioned by Mandalay Pictures. The novel, which will hit shelves this February, is a love story zeroing in on a 26-year-old man whose wild night of booze ends in an unexpected way -- he blacks out and wakes up in the morning to find horns on this head -- not the paste variety, but honest-to-devil horns. "As the horns grow bigger by the day, the reason why seems to lie in the unsolved murder of his girlfriend." Since he's growing devil horns, I think it's safe to presume that there's some misdeed behind the horns.

Nick Wechsler Fuels Joe Hill and Stephen King's 'Throttle'
Is there a Joe Hill story that isn't optioned right now? I think even the ones unfinished on his laptop are optioned. Combine his name with that of his famous father, Stephen King, and it probably doesn't even have to have more than an opening sentence.
According to Variety, Throttle, the novella Hill co-authored with King, has been optioned by Nick Wechsler. It won't be published until 2009, in an anthology titled He Is Legend that will be dedicated to Richard Matheson. The story follows a father and son, members of a motorcycle gang, who are being chased by an 18-wheeler tanker truck.
Neil Jordan to Film Joe Hill's 'Heart Shaped Box'

Neil Jordan (who looks exactly like Terry Gilliam, no?) is set to adapt Joe Hill's novel Heart Shaped Box for the big screen. Jordan will direct as well, with Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman producing. Joe Hill is the son of horror master Stephen King, and it looks like the genes paid off; Hill's book has been very well received. Heart Shaped Box has nothing to do with Kurt Cobain, but it is about an aging rock star who loves spooky artifacts. He spots an ad on eBay for a suit that contains a ghost. The suit arrives, and - dun dun dah! - the ghost wants him dead. The book was released in February and was Hill's first novel, after an acclaimed run writing short stories. I like Neil Jordan as a filmmaker, but the guy has fared very poorly when it comes to movies about ghosts. I don't know if you ever saw his High Spirits with Peter O'Toole and Steve Guttenberg, but - woof! The guy's got a spotty track record, but when he's on he makes some excellent films. Hopefully this new thriller is more The Crying Game than In Dreams. Jordan's next feature is The Brave One, another thriller, starring Jodie Foster and Terrence Howard. He's also got A Killing on Carnival Row in his future, which we recently told you about. That one sounds interesting! Did any of you read this Heart Shaped Box? Is it worth checking out?
Quickhits: Duchovny Joins the Fire, Pabst Nails Heart-Shaped Box and Diesel Caught Filming Hannibal

Odds and ends from Thursday:
- Ah, there's nothing like playing a dead guy in a film. David Duchovny has signed on to play Halle Berry's deceased husband in Things We Lost in the Fire. Also starring in the film will be Benicio Del Toro as Duchovny's troubled best friend who Berry invites to come live with her family after hubby's death. Now, this is where someone like me would expect Del Toro to get all sick and twisted on the Berry household, however, based on the description it appears he helps the family move on and eventually turn their lives around. Duchovny's character will only appear in flashbacks. God, I hate flashbacks -- but that's an entirely different post.
- Talk about talent that runs in the family, Joe Hill (son of horror guru Steven King) has sold the rights to his upcoming novel, Heart-Shaped Box, to Warner Brothers who, in turn, brought on Tom Pabst to adapt it for the big screen. Akiva Goldsman will be producing this supernatural thriller about a rock star who collects occult artifacts. After bidding online for a ghost (not sure how one does that, but okay), said ghost leads him to the deep South where he must confront his past in order to escape the evil forces haunting his every move.
- Well well well -- it appears we finally figured out why Vin Diesel abruptly jumped ship and bailed on the film Black Water Transit. It appears the actor was spotted in the Dominican Republic where, apparently, he was wrapping up filming on his dream project, Hannibal. Wait, last we heard, Hannibal was potentially moving forward with production locations being scouted, but nothing was official ... yet. So, in three months, you mean to tell me this puppy is fully cast and just about done shooting? Can't be. Not possible. Perhaps, they're almost done filming one of many locations, but there's no way the film could get this far without anyone knowing about it. Heck, IMDB doesn't even have the thing in pre-production yet -- what gives?
King's Kid Gets Movie Deal
Filed under: Thrillers », Deals », Warner Brothers », Newsstand »
I went to college with Stephen
King's kid. I didn't know him at all, but everyone on campus adored the fact that his parents had named him Joe. Joe
King. Get it? Oh, the clever. It's sort of a cruel joke, but also an awesome bit of human-borne wit from a man who will
always be associated with horror. I was disappointed, then, to read in Variety this morning that Joe is
calling himself "Joe Hill" (that's a picture of the real
one up there) these days. I mean, it's good because he's getting gigs on his own merit, but all the pleasure that
was once availble in his name is now gone. Sad.Anyway, the reason Variety was writing about
