'Ghost Rider 2' Gets a Fuel Injection with David S. Goyer

Most of us didn't ask the Studio Powers That Be for a Ghost Rider 2, but it doesn't matter, because we'll be getting one. Back in January, the whispers began at Bloody-Disgusting that Columbia was gearing up another Ghost Rider run, and today it has come true. Variety reports that the studio is talking to none other than David S. Goyer to pen a new installment. Nicolas Cage is expected to return as Johnny Blaze, and former Marvel Studios' head Avi Arad will be producing.

Goyer was quick to say (via a spokesperson) that he wasn't officially signed, but that talks were underway to base Ghost Rider 2 on a script he did many years ago. If you'd like to know a little something about that script, you can read a review IGN did of it in 2000. Nothing ever dies thanks to the Internet and if nothing else, you can laugh at the rumors we once believed a decade ago. (Johnny Depp as Ghost Rider!)

At such early stages of fiery fuel injection, there's not much else to say. Since Mark Steven Johnson penned and directed the last one, it's probably safe to assume that if they want new writers, they'll probably want a new director. Variety hints that Columbia is keeping the property alive in order to retain its rights from Marvel, but it doesn't say whether or not they were up against a deadline. So, I'll quit talking and hand it over to the true Ghost Rider fans. Is there any hope for this one if Goyer gets involved? Anything you want to see from a particular Ghost Rider run? Speak up now, and maybe you can influence its pre-production.

Ghost Rider Tries to Prove Critics Wrong

In the increasing effort to prove critics of his early trailers and posters wrong, Mark Steven Johnson and the Ghost Rider team have released a new trailer showing Johnny Blaze transforming in more impressive, detailed fashion than the previously seen transformation scene. The transformation scene was one of those most viciously attacked after the trailer release, so it makes sense a new version was quick to follow. Check out the official blog for the new trailer, and see if it looks any better to you.

Better? Yeah, I guess so ... although really, that isn't saying much. Despite my geek-nature longing to enjoy this film, there really haven't been a lot of positive things to say about it. Really, the best you can say about this flick is "hey, at least it isn't one of Marvel's self-financed films, so it probably won't hurt so bad if it doesn't do well." On the other hand, all the negative buzz isn't setting great momentum for Marvel's subsequent films. I'm still crossing my fingers on Ghost Rider, but even I don't expect much.

More Ghost Rider Video

Okay folks, the third installment of the Ghost Rider video production blog is up over on the official Sony website, and as your friend, I'm suggesting you check it out so we can have an open, honest discussion about this ... because I have a confession to make. No more sneaking around here, I've got nothing but honesty for you toda,y after watching writer/director Mark Steven Johnson explain a bit about the Johnny-Blaze-to-Ghost-Rider transformation.

Watched the clip? Okay, good.

Yes, some of the transformation looks very CGI heavy. Yes, the short bit with Ghost Rider cruising down the side of a building is obviously CGI -- good CGI, mind you, but clearly CGI. That all said: Holy cow, am I excited for this picture. I know we're all supposed to be worried about it, talking about how Sony pushed it to February from a summer launch, and how Nicolas Cage is the star, etc. etc. But man, I just want to see a flaming skull flying around the streets on a fast motorcycle, breaking things and hurting people. Am I worried that it'll perform poorly? Sure I am. But I'm beginning to believe that I personally will really enjoy this one.

Nicolas Cage on Ghost Rider

When the release date for Nicolas Cage's Ghost Rider got rather significantly pushed back, it certainly raised some eyebrows. Rumors naturally began circulating that the studio was afraid of the film and wanting to bury it in the movie dead-zone of February. According to Cage, the real reason for the delay was a helicopter. Apparently, director Mark Steven Johnson was really interested in packing the film with some serious high end special effects but only managed to convince the studio to add them at the last minute, resulting in a severe production delay. As Cage explained to Coming Soon: "There were some effects that finally got authorized by the studio which Mark really wanted and they're pretty big and it took time to put them together and design them. So we had to delay it and I think it's good because it's something we really wanted to fight for with Ghost Rider going into battle with a helicopter." So there you have it, folks. Johnny Blaze will be fighting a helicopter in what is apparently a rather epic CGI scene.

Cage promises you'd like the movie; he thinks its added dimension of spirituality is something Marvel films haven't really touched on yet, which will give this one a style and mystique all its own. Despite my misgivings, I really hope he pulls it off, because I'd love to see a good Ghost Rider flick.
