Finally, we have our first ridiculously odd film of 2008: Visioneers. Truth be told, I knew nothing about this film when Cinematical received the exclusive clip above. And if you watch that clip, you'll say "okay" and get mildly turned on by Judy Greer in a nightgown with her husband (played by the wonky Zach Galifianakis) and friend "Betty." But then you have to watch the trailer for this flick (either on the official website or after the jump). That's when Visioneers takes it up to a whole different level; one that involves lots of yelling, exploding people, middle fingers and what has to be one of the oddest stories we'll see on screen this year. Quite frankly, I cannot wait to see this.

Here's the synopsis from the site: George Washington Winsterhammerman lives an ordinary life. He has a wife, a kid, a house and a boat. Every day George gets in his minivan and goes to work as a Level Three Tunt at the Jeffers Corporation, the largest and most profitable corporation in the history of mankind. It is an utterly comfortable life, but when people around George begin exploding, he fears he might be next. George visits his doctor and learns that the dreams he's been having are a symptom of impending explosion. Unfortunately, George can't stop dreaming, and as the explosion epidemic worsens, he is forced to question the life he's been living.

Visioneers premieres at the Seattle International Film Festival on June 12th and 14th, before hitting up CineVegas (where Cinematical will review) on June 18th and 19th. (I know it's early and it's only a clip and a trailer, but I think I'm in love ...)

The story of a womanizer who gets beaten for his ways and loses his balls is interesting in its own right. It's strange, different, and has a ring of poetic justice. Now, continuing the uniqueness, this castration comedy is getting a diverse cast. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Judy Greer, Chloe Sevigny, Cybill Shepherd, and Billy Dee Williams have signed on to star with Patrick Wilson in Barry Munday. This is one cast I never would have dreamed could come together.

As we told you back in February, the film is based on Frank Turner Hollon's book, Life is a Strange Place. It focuses on a womanizer who gets caught canoodling with a teen, and his father beats him so hard for it that Barry ends up in the hospital with injuries that lead to castration. He begins to see that his life is not quite how he'd like it, and just as he realizes he will never be able to have kids of his own, he's named in a paternity suit. "Barry is elated at the second chance at fatherhood. Now if he can just avoid his crazy ex-girlfriend, her rabid dog, a mob of angry gay midgets, and his mother until the baby is born..."

Judy Greer will play the ex-girlfriend and soon-to-be mom, Sevigny will be her flirty sister with a secret life who hits on Munday, Shepherd is taking on the role of their mother, and Billy Dee will be a "tough boss at Munday's insurance company." Is anyone else as charmed by this cast as I am?

When word first came up about Traveling, I was all sorts of excited. In a moment of spot-on casting, Aaron Eckhart was picked to play a widower who writes a book about grieving, becomes a self-help guru, and then falls for another woman and realizes that he's not over his loss. Hearing that Jennifer Aniston was going to play that new woman -- well, I wasn't excited, or disappointed. Just meh. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, we've got five more cast members who should perk things up a bit.

Dan Fogler (Balls of Fury) will play, surprisingly enough, "the guru's overzealous manager." This is just about the last thing I would've imagined, but I'm game to see it. Judy Greer (27 Dresses) will play an employee and friend of Aniston's at the florist, which isn't surprising at all. And Martin Sheen, well, he's going to play Eckhart's father, who has a strained relationship with his offspring. Thinking about it, it seems strange, but there's just something in Sheen's face that makes it feel right. And besides, who couldn't do with more Martin Sheen? Rounding out the cast, there's Joe Anderson (Across the Universe) as Aniston's musician boyfriend, and John Carroll Lynch (Zodiac) as a "reluctant seminar attendee."

Filmed in the summer of 2004, The Amateurs has been in the can for over three years. The movie's title has gone through several changes, and imdb still lists it as The Moguls. The film has had a whopping six release dates going back to 2005, but it finally sputters into theaters today -- in Los Angeles and Dallas, anyway. Movies often have distribution trouble (you can read more about the problems this one faced in the Los Angeles Times), but the struggle of The Amateurs surprised me because it had all the makings of a sleeper hit. It's got a killer premise (think The Full Monty with porno) and an amazing cast. The film's struggle surprised me...until I saw it.

A queasy mixture of Boogie Nights sleaze and Patch Adams sentimentality, The Amateurs takes place in the small town of Butterface Fields (ho-HO!). That's where you'll find Andy Sargentee (Jeff Bridges, in shaggy dog Lebowski mode), a divorced dad who is down on his luck. His son (Alex D. Linz) is now living with a wealthy stepfather (the typically solid Steven Weber), and this makes Sargentee insecure. He's got to make some money, and fast. So, naturally, he decides to enlist the help of his friends and make an amateur porno flick.
