Arcana Comics and Legacy Filmworks Team Up

Filed under: Action », Horror », Independent », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Deals », Scripts », Newsstand », Comic/Superhero/Geek »

It's always cool to see the indie comic publishers getting movie deals -- especially a crazy, multi-film one. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Arcana Studios and Legacy Filmworks are teaming up for no less than five adaptations.

The first up is Paradox, based on the three issue series by Christos Gage, who also penned the film's screenplay alongside his wife, Ruth Fletcher Gage. It will be directed by Stargate: Atlantis helmer Brenton Spencer, and star Kevin Sorbo. Sorbo will play a cop of a parallel Earth (is there any other kind?) ruled by magic, who finds himself investigating a series of murders committed by the unknown force of science. You might snicker at the premise, but one of the characters is Winston Churchill, who gets to be a 130-year-old sorcerer. You can check out a preview here.

They've also lined up Martin Shapiro's Chopper, which follows a headless, ghostly biker named Jeremiah Payne. As the Angel of Death, he patrols the streets and exterminates sinners. You can check out a preview, but read fast, they're actually planning to start shooting next month. My favorite of the lot is Jay Busbee's Sundown, which sees a journalist and a small-town Arizona sheriff hunting down vampires. Cowboy hats and the supernatural is an automatic win for me.

The other films have yet to be determined -- Arcana has some gloriously pulpy stories in its library, so the possibilities are rather endless. Got any favorites you'd like to see, or recommend to your fellow readers?

Wow, That 'Sword and the Sorcerer' Sequel is Actually Happening!

Filed under: Action », Remakes and Sequels »

About eight months ago I got some sequel news that stunned me to the very core of my mega-geeky being: After 25 years of waiting, I would finally be getting my sequel to The Sword and the Sorcerer. (For a recap of this nerdly saga, click right here.) Suffice to say that "Tales of the Ancient Empire" was about to become a reality, and if you happen to be a movie freak who recognizes that particular movie title, then congratulations: You're officially my friend.

For those, on the other hand, who have lives ... I can offer a brief recap: A fantastic B-movie from the early '80s is about to get a long-overdue sequel -- and Twitch has lots of details! Apparently Lee Horsley will be returning for the sequel, and he'll be joined by the likes of Christopher Lambert, Kevin Sorbo and Victoria Maurette. The outlandishly prolific filmmaker Albert Pyun had this to say about the project: "It's got a sexy sorceress, hordes of demonic vampires, a giant serpent, sea pirates, nasty sword (and axe, spear, leg of cow) fights and gore and nudity galore. Everything that a rousing adventure needs to have."

So while I'm a little disappointed in Twitch's news that the movie will be more of a sequel "in spirit" than anything else, I'm just glad Mr. Pyun keeps his promises: He told us (years ago) that Talon would return in Tales of the Ancient Empire, and it sure looks like he will be. (Don't forget the sword!)

Television's Hercules Has Harsh Words For Sam Raimi

In what could be described as a case of "sour grapes," former Hercules star and recent The OC guest star Kevin Sorbo had some, shall we say, choice words about his former Hercules exec. producer and Spider-Man franchise director Sam Raimi. In an interview detailed over at IESB, Sorbo accuses Raimi of, among other things, not giving him parts in any of his bigger films because he is infantile and holds a grudge against him for not wanting to do more season of Hercules.

According to Sorbo: "I busted my ass on Hercules and during Season Five, I almost died doing it. I think I'm a good enough actor that [Sam Raimi] can put me in a secondary part in one of his feature films. It would be nice if he did that. I think he's holding a grudge over me." In the article, Sorbo also recounted the director's actions when he ran into him during the filming of For Love of the Game. Sorbo, who is friends with the film's star Kevin Costner, was hanging with the actor in his trailer when Raimi came in and, according to Sorbo, acted nice but was really holding back. "It is very infantile from a guy who's as powerful as he is and as wealthy as he is to. Throw me a bone. Why not let me do something?

Even if Sorbo hasn't been in any of Raimi's movies, its not like he hasn't had work. He starred in another successful TV show after Hercules -- Andromeda -- which ran for five years. Maybe Sorbo feels he deserves the same treatment as longtime Raimi friend Bruce Campbell? After all, Raimi has thrown Campbell many bones and had him appear in most of his big projects, including the first two Spider-Man films. To me, Sorbo comes across as jealous of Campbell and doesn't really make much of a compelling case -- especially knowing how Hollywood works. Sure, it would be great if everyone did the "right" thing in Hollywood. Unfortunately, that's just not how things work. Sorry Kevin. Maybe Kevin Costner will give you a job?
