I shouldn't need to go through this whole thing again, so if you have no idea what's currently going on with the film Fanboys, read this, this and this -- and then come back. A little while ago I received the craziest email from a good pal, and that email contained three other email exchanges between director Steve Brill (aka the dude who took over for Kyle Newman during reshoots) and fans of the original cut of Fanboys. A couple of notes before I post these emails:
No matter how cruddy the director is, I do not support attacking the man's cut when you haven't even seen it yet. I've made that clear before, and I'll say it again now. However, his other films are definitely fair game.
I've confirmed with a source "in the know" that this is indeed Steve Brill behind these emails; that, originally, he confessed to them, but then tried to say someone hacked his email account when he realized how much of a complete idiot he came off as. But note that I have not talked to Brill myself (though I'm totally willing to do so, Steve, so email me), so I'm not 100% certain this was him. More like 96.5%.
Also, I've tried to clean up the foul language as best I can, but do keep in mind that these email exchanges aren't exactly safe for work.
That said, head after the jump to read these hysterical exchanges ...
Here's the Fanboys synopsis currently up on IMDb: "Star Wars" fans travel to Skywalker Ranch to steal an early copy of "Episode I: The Phantom Menace" for their dying friend."
Problem is, that's not the movie everyone will see when it eventually hits theaters. There's been a ton of talk surrounding the Fanboy re-cuts; how the cancer storyline was taken out, how Kyle Newman was replaced as director, and how the Weinsteins have pretty much turned Fanboys into a completely different film from what was originally intended. Yesterday, fans wrote into AICN claiming to have donated props for the film, and were upset over all these changes. So upset they were starting a campaign against The Weinstein Co., hoping to get Newman's original cut released instead of this new one.
Thanks to a well-placed, super delegate secret spy source, Cinematical was able to get the real skinny on what was going on with Fanboys. Some of this info is new, some old, but I have confirmed all of it to be true. First off, Kyle Newman definitely was replaced as director for the re-shoots by Steve Brill (Without a Paddle). The "dying of cancer" storyline was completely dumped, and, instead, the fanboys are now trying to sneak a copy of Phantom Menace simply because they're fans and want to see it. According to my source, the story is now "disjointed, nonsensical and lacking any heart."
I wonder where that Star Wars kid is now? Remember the dude who taped himself imitating the Darth Maul character from Star Wars Episode I? The video subsequently leaked online and the poor kid was put through hell for years; his family even went so far as to file a lawsuit against the kids who placed the footage on the net. Well, wherever he is, I bet he'd love to audition for this latest contest sponsored by The Weinstein Co. and Dailymotion. In an attempt to promote Kyle Newman's Fanboys, Dailymotion is hosting a contest in which fans can upload videos of themselves showing just how big a fanboy (or fangirl) they really are. Users will then have a chance to vote for their favorites, and once it's narrowed down to the top ten, Fanboys producers will award one lucky individual with a walk-on role in Fanboys. Yeah, I know -- I can't believe they're not done shooting that film either.
In addition to landing a role in the film, your video will also be included as a special feature on the Fanboys DVD. Not for nothing, but I'd say those are pretty cool prizes -- if only to use as bragging rights in your highly-competitive, yet tight-knit circle of Star Wars friends. "Seth has every Han Solo line of dialogue memorized -- oh yeah, well I'm in Fanboys biotch! Beat that!" I imagine you'll have to get creative, as the competition will be pretty stiff. Dailymotion already has up a slew of videos that were shot during the recent Star Wars Convention, where plenty of Princess Leias were sporting their half-nekkedness for all to see. That's not to say you guys should break out that Luke Skywalker thong you received as a gag gift at the your last Star Wars party -- but I would suggest using your imagination a bit. High production value and groovy special effects usually go a long way when it comes to getting votes, so now might be the time to cash in that favor from your friend who works at that post-production house. For more info on the contest, head on over to FanboyContest.com or Dailymotion.com for rules, guidelines, etc ... And don't forget to go see Fanboys when it hit theaters this January.
In the midst of the festivities for Star Wars Celebration IV, there has been plenty of news for fans on all things Star Wars. IESB is now hosting our first look at the poster for the film Fanboys, which is probably best summed up as a love letter to Star Wars geeks everywhere. The film, directed by Kyle Newman, focuses on a group of friends who make a pact to honor the last wishes of their friend to see The Phantom Menace at Lucas' Skywalker Ranch -- the Mecca for fanboys everywhere. The film stars Sam Huntington, Jay Baruchel (Knocked Up), and Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars). But more importantly the film managed to get Princess Leia herself, Carrie Fisher, to play a small role in the film.
IESB also has a batch of photos and a hi-res version of the one-sheet on the site. And since this is a film that speaks to the geek in all of us, the poster wastes no time in mustering up some nostalgia for the "good ole' days" with a close up of hands gripping a light saber and a classic font -- veryReturn of The Jedi. Newman doesn't have a long resume as a director, but his films range in subject matter from re-incarnation to a straight-to video horror called The Hollow. IESB also reports that Newman screened some 50 minutes of the film to universal approval from the audience. Fanboys is set for release in January 2008 -- which as we know is either the worst or best thing that could have happened.
You're all a bunch of intelligent and well-informed movie nerds, so try to answer this question for me: When (MOVIE X) gets bumped out of a release date and is promptly rescheduled for next January, what does that usually mean? A) The movie's really awesome and the distributor wants it to be the only good movie to hit screens during the "dump" season, B) The movie's really crappy and the distributor wants to dump it quietly when nobody will notice it, or C) The delay is because the backers are SO thrilled with the flick that they're giving the director some extra money for reshoots.
Filmmaker Kyle Newman is insisting that "C" is the correct answer, thus explaining why you won't be able to see the Star Wars-centric comedy Fanboys until the first month of 2008. (The previous release date was August 17.) The director goes a little bi-polar in an email to TheForce.net. First he's devastated ("I am devastated") and then he's excited ("I am so excited") but the bottom line is that you fanboys will have to wait a little bit longer for your self-titled comedy. For those who haven't seen the trailer yet: Fanboys is about a bunch of late-'90s movie nerds who go on a cross-country road trip in an effort to steal a pre-release print of The Phantom Menace. Could make for a clever little comedy, but I'm a little skeptical of the trailer, which makes the flick look like a painful cross between Wild Hogs and Detroit Rock City. I just don't see what sleeping-bag homophobia and forced stripping has to do with Star Wars fandom.
Well, for you fanboys out there, this could be the moment you've been waiting for. That's right, the first official Fanboys trailer has finally hit the net and, honestly, I'm more than a little underwhelmed. Dare I say The Force is not very strong with this one? Before I continue, Fanboys (in case you did not know) is a film about a bunch of Star Wars geeks who attempt to pull off what appears to be an impossible mission: Sneak into George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch and swipe a copy of Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace (before it comes out in theaters) to honor the final wish of a dying friend.
As far as cast goes, we have a bunch of "Yeah, I think I've seen that dude somewhere" type, including Sam Huntington (Superman Returns), Dan Fogler (School for Scoundrels), Chris Marquette (Just Friends) and Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars). Granted, I'm not a fanboy, have never dressed up as a Storm Trooper just for the hell of it, attended one of them fan conventions or lived my life according to Yoda's teachings. So, perhaps, this is why the trailer (which reminded me of Road Trip, except with a slew of Star Wars references) did not dazzle me. However, the part when they clash with a bunch of Star Trek fans did make me chuckle just a little bit.
What do you Fanboys think? Am I coming down a bit too hard on the flick? Do you think it has potential?
This marks Marquette's second time working with director Kyle Newman, as the two also paired up on Fanboys. He'll be taking on the part of Max Foster, lead nerd. Byrd will play his sidekick, Owen DiMarco (aka "horn dog"), the kind of guy who majors in women's studies. Not surprisingly, Ramirez will portray a foreign exchange student (a la Napoleon Dynamite) named Santiago. In a recent interview with Coming Soon, Ramirez noted his accent will be "quite like Mr. Deeds' John Turturro with the personality of Raul Julia in The Addams Family." Okay, that sounds a bit bizarre ... but I dig it. When asked whether any of the nerds will be based off characters from the original film, Ramirez replied, "They're all new."
So, what do you think about the new cast? Any chances they'll screw it up?
I'm not sure what to think of the upcoming Revenge of the Nerds remake. On one hand, it will be interesting to watch how they update the nerds; throw in things like computers, the internet, iPods and (insert a bunch more neat little gadgets). However, since the original is such a classic, I'm scared I might find myself inside the darkened theater with a clenched fist just dying to burst out and scream things like, "That character was so much funnier in the original!" or "Why didn't this just go direct-to-DVD?"
Nevertheless, a Nerds remake is on the way, and it appears as if we have our first cast member. Variety reports Katie Cassidy (Click, When a Stranger Calls) has signed on to star as Suzy Stone (aka the really hot blonde girl who at first hates the nerds until she falls in love with one), head of the Pi Delta Pi sorority. Now, since director Kyle Newman (Fanboys) has said this will not be a straight remake, there's a small chance her character will differ from the original Pi Delta sorority leader, Betty Childs (as played by Julie Montogmery). Cassidy can next be seen (also playing a sorority girl) in the horror film Black Christmas. (Not for nothing, but I think we should all thank our lucky stars that Paris Hilton did not land this part.)
While I don't have any shiny new movie pics for you today, I do have a few new posters for those of you looking to cover up the beer stains in your dorm room. Check it out:
Even though the film doesn't have a cast yet, Fox Atomic is wasting no time in promoting its Revenge of the Nerds remake. That's right folks, we officially have a teaser poster. Directed by Kyle Newman (Fanboys), Nerds reunites us with the Lamda Lamda Lamda fraternity as they struggle for acceptance and seek revenge upon those jocks who deserve it the most.
Hey, guess what -- Sarah Michelle Gellar is returning to make another crappy thriller. Hooray! A new poster for The Return (aka Scott's most anticipated fall flick) has hit the net and, well, why am I not excited. Pic follows a traveling business woman (Gellar) who is drawn to an old farmhouse after having dreamt that a murder took place there 15 years earlier.
Admit it, I know you're just dying to know more about this Revenge of the Nerds remake. Well, the bad news is they are still going ahead with the film. And the good news? As of this minute, Paris Hilton is not attached to the pic. Phew ... for now. IESB caught up with Kyle Newman, who will be directing the Nerds remake right after he's done dealing with all these Fanboys. Hey, when did this guy become the resident expert on all things geek? I'd really like to know.
After checking out the interview, I was happy to hear that Newman will not be creating a straight-up remake. Seems plausible, seeing as the original was tied into so many classic 80's stereotypes that one would be forced to re-invent and update this story so that it makes sense in the present. While it was still too early for casting rumors and the such, Newman did not totally rule out an appearance from any of the original nerds. He did inform us that the geeky fraternity in the film will still be called Lambda Lambda Lambda. Okay, fine -- maybe I'm just a little curious about this film. A tiny bit. Minuscule, really. Don't tell anyone.
Just when I thought Hollywood was ignoring my non-stop phone calls and pretending
as if the gigantic cardboard signs I created didn't exist, word gets out that, finally, someone is remaking Revenge of the Nerds. How long were you gonna wait Hollywood? Huh?
How long were you going to make us suffer?
Kyle Newman, director of the upcoming Fanboys flick, has been tapped to direct. Seems
like the perfect fit to me. Who better to direct a film about nerds then a fanboy himself (or, well, someone who is
directing a film about fanboys). Newman will be teaming back up with Adam
F. Goldberg, who also worked on Fanboys and is currently rewriting this new Nerds film. Now, I assume the pic will
be along the same lines as the classic 1984 original, however I imagine it will take place in the present and, if we're
lucky, Lindsay Lohan will play one of the head sorority girls. Oooh,
my fingers are so crossed!
So, help me cast the new Revenge of the Nerds. Shall we
add Justin Timberlake to the list? With so many hot young actors, will
it even be possible to find the right nerds?
