Fan Rant: Utah Jazz Owner Bans 'Zack and Miri'

Filed under: Comedy », Celebrities and Controversy », Fandom », Distribution », Exhibition », Fan Rant »

I will never understand why we're so afraid of sex in this country. It boggles my mind. Not only are we deathly afraid of sex, but we're also afraid of words. Combine a scary word and a film that carries a sex scene or two and you have what some would argue was an act of terrorism. Seriously. Ask Utah Jazz and Megaplex Theatres owner Larry Miller, who is refusing to screen Kevin Smith's Zack and Miri Make a Porno because he feels "it's very close to an NC-17 with its graphic nudity and graphic sex."

To take a page from Eric D. Snider, who took a page from SNL's Weekend Update ... really? Really, Larry Miller? So you have no problem screening Saw V in your movie theaters and exposing your customers to over-the-top violence and gore, but Zack and Miri is off limits? Really? Seriously? And you'll also screen films like The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up, which use raunchy, foul-mouthed language and feature rampant drug use, but you won't screen a film that has -- what? -- one to three scenes of nudity and "pretend" on-camera sex? Really? And this man is allowed to own an entire chain of theaters? Seriously? Really?

Now, it's been over a month since I last saw Zack and Miri Make a Porno, but trust me on this one folks -- the on-screen nudity is tame and rather harmless. And if you're ponying up the cash to see a flick directed by Kevin Smith that includes the word 'Porno' in its title, then something tells me you're expecting a little bit of dirty. We here at Cinematical call on Mr. Larry Miller to admit his moronic faults, screen Zack and Miri Make a Porno in all of his theaters and write an apology note to Kevin Smith, his fans and myself for having to waste over 300 words on this idiot.

Oh, and I hope the Utah Jazz have a miserable season.

Alpha, Omega, and Actors from Justin Long to Dennis Hopper

Filed under: Animation », Casting », Family Films »

In our animated future, we can not only anticipate Wall-E robots, Tintin, and dragon taming, but also the fuzzy and dangerous world of wolves. The Hollywood Reporter posts that we're getting a new animated film called Alpha and Omega, and it's got a whole roster of recognizable names attached -- Justin Long, Hayden Panettiere, Christina Ricci, Danny Glover, Larry Miller, and Dennis Hopper.

Alpha and Omega focuses on "two bickering wolves -- one a disciplined, Alpha-bred wolf (Panettiere), and the other a fun-loving, comical Omega wolf (Long) -- who are captured and taken thousands of miles from their home. Determined to rejoin their pack, the two mismatched wolves begin a dangerous trek across unfamiliar terrain, battling the odds, the elements, the bears, and one another -- and finding love along the way." Look out, Milo & Otis! There's a new sheriff in town. It's too soon to tell what this will all shape up like, but at least they cast the leads pretty well. Panettiere is good at being terse and Alpha, while Long is pretty much Omega in human form.

Brokeback Mountain cancelled in Utah theater

I guess Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller doesn't like gay cowboys anymore than Gene Shalit does. The  Megaplex in Jordan Commons, a theater Miller owns in Sandy, Utah, a suburb of Salt Lake City, abruptly pulled Brokeback Mountain from its schedule.  Management posted a sign saying the theater would not be screening the film. The film's distributor said theater management "reneged on their licensing agreement" and refused to show the award-nominated film (Which is not about gay cowboys - or sheepherders, dammit! Keep up, Larry!)

I know Utah is run by Latter Day Saints, but common, people of Utah! Surely there are enough theater loving people in Salt Lake City (and there have to be at least one or two gay people there too, right?) who want to see Brokeback Mountain. As of press time, there are a couple theaters in the Salt Lake City area (at least according to Fandango) still showing the film, but you might want to hurry.
