After a long flight on my part and a far longer drive for both of us, Scott Weinberg and I have finally arrived in Montréal for the FanTasia International Film Festival (their thirteenth, our first). The genre-heavy festival lasts for nearly three weeks; alas, we've but one to spare, so without much further ado, here's a look at what I've seen already and what I hope to see before Scott tips his own hand with a title or two to recommend.
Of the features playing, I can highly recommend Michael Paul Stephenson's Troll 2 doc, Best Worst Movie; the Aussie revenge thriller, The Horseman (not to be confused with the barely-seen Dennis Quaid vehicle, Horsemen); and Paul Solet's beautifully bloody baby horror, Grace. Those looking for something a bit stranger might end up being a bit more fond of Black and The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle than I was, though I also seemed more easily pleased by the Nazi zombies of Dead Snow than most, so I guess it all balances out. My enthusiasm for the ultra-kitschy likes of Alien Trespass and Lesbian Vampire Killers, not to mention the admittedly boundary-pushing Deadgirl, is all a bit less than what's already been mentioned, so let's just leave those at that.

I Love You Beth Cooper
A high school nerd proclaims his love for the most popular girl in school during his graduation speech and in response she decides to give him the night of his life. In some ways this looks like a by the numbers high school comedy, but there's charm and wit at work here. And there's no denying the appeal of Heroes' Hayden Panetierre as the object of our protagonist's affection. Here's William's take on the trailer, and you can see the movie on July 10.
Lesbian Vampire Killers
This movie wears its Shaun of the Dead influence pretty obviously and it's hard not to love a concept like lesbian vampires. Fun little homage or humorless knock-off? Time will tell, but I'm feeling optimistic about this one. Two Welsh lads (one hefty, one not so much) have their hiking excursion interrupted by a pack of blood sucking lesbians. No U.S. release info for this one just yet.
Hey, You Got Your Fantastic Fest in My SXSW!

And boy does it taste awesome! As you probably know, and with all due respect to the Austin Film Festival, the two coolest film festivals in Austin have combined their cinematical magic ... and the result is six more flicks that will tickle the eyeballs of any self-respecting genre fan. This is the first year that Fantastic Fest has contributed to the SXSW slate, and it sure looks like the partnership is off to a great start.The six flicks are: French action flick Black, Thai mayhem sequel Ong Bak 2, the world premiere of The Haunting in Connecticut, a blisteringly good Aussie thriller called The Horseman, the awesome-sounding British import Lesbian Vampire Killers, and the Canadian zombie effort Pontypool, which played Toronto last September and got some rather good notices.
Of the six, I've only see The Horseman, and I think it's a damn good film. DAMN good. It's about a father whose runaway daughter is found dead after appearing in a homemade porno flick, so he goes on a ruthless road trip of revenge. Only he didn't expect to pick up a young female hitchhiker along the way. (It's not a comedy.)

'Lesbian Vampire Killers' Trailer

Last May, we posted that the big screen was soon to be overrun by Lesbian Vampire Killers -- killers of lesbian vampires, not vampire killers who are lesbians (tricky English!). Now you can check out the trailer for the Welsh-centric horror flick (starring the kids from Gavin and Stacey) above.
You can't see too much in this brief trailer, but there is the obligatory sexy woman shots and salivating boys -- all set to the classic campy voiceover and recognizable screen font explanation. (You know the fonts I'm talking about -- the ones that look like they're painted on? Anyhow...) Lesbian Vampire Killers focuses on a village where women have been plagued by a vampire curse, and the surviving menfolk who send two dudes (Gavin and Stacey's James Corden and Mathew Horne) out into the moors as a sacrifice.
It's blatantly trying to tap into our cult/camp inclinations, but has it succeeded? Are these blood-drinking lesbian vampires enough to get you to the theater?

No, I don't think this latest feature is a mixture of Buffy and Foxy Brown, where lesbians get tough and hunt vampires. (Has there been a flick like that yet? If not, I'm sure we'll get it one of these days.) Instead, this seems to be about the dudes who kill lesbian vampires, or will be killed by them. Variety reports that James Corden and Mathew Horne, who star in the UK's cult show Gavin and Stacey, are re-teaming to bring down some vamps in Phil Claydon's Lesbian Vampire Killers. Written by Stewart Williams and Paul Hupfield, this horror comedy focuses on Corden and Horne "stuck in a village where all the women have been enslaved by a vampire curse." This makes it sound like the village was a lesbian commune, or the girls tapped into their gay side after growing the fangs, sort of like Willow on Buffy. However, IMDb fills in some blanks. An ancient curse falls upon this Welsh town, so the "remaining menfolk ... send two hapless young lads out onto the moors as a sacrifice." Talk about drawing the short stick, although I imagine there are worse ways to be sacrificed.
I'm sure there will be lots of skin and all the girlie bits that make horror fanboys salivate. What I don't know much about is Gavin & Stacey. Any fans out there want to weigh in about Corden and Horne taking on lesbian blood suckers? Can they do it?
