It was just last week that anime fans the world over breathed a sigh of relief that Leonardo DiCaprio's live-action Akira was no more. But, that doesn't mean Hollywood has lost its taste for anime, and there are still plenty of other reboots headed our way. So while most of them have stayed in development limbo, two of the more popular titles: Cowboy Bebop and Robotech have started to make new ground, and some of the people involved are starting to talk.
Cowboy Bebop:
When the live action film of the beloved anime was first announced, fans were not thrilled with the idea. Plus, it probably didn't help that Keanu Reeves was taking the role of Spike. But, maybe we shouldn't count out the film yet, because when it comes to the film's screenwriter, there is good news and some bad news. But, let's start with the good news. In an interview with Anime Vice, Craig was asked about whether or not he was familiar with the series, and to his credit, Craig went into full fan-boy mode, telling them about some of his favorite episodes and that both he and Reeves have been meeting with Sunrise studio (the creator of the anime) to make sure that the original 'feel' of the show remains intact. According to Craig, "they [Sunrise] were very specific about their vision for the series, and how it might convert to a live-action film." -- sounds promising, right? Well, the bad news is that Craig has zero experience with sci-fi, and made his name writing about con-men and dysfunctional families. But, I'm going to remain hopeful that with Sunrise watching over the flick, there might be a chance we get something a little better than expected.

Cast This: The Live-Action 'Jetsons' Movie

Now that Robert Rodriguez won't be making Barbarella anytime in the near future it looks like he has put his live-action Jetson's flick at the front of the pack instead. The director recently told MTV that he hopes to get the film in front of cameras by next year. A script was completed by Adam F. Goldberg (Fanboys) back in 2007, but Rodriguez has been hard at work on a rewrite and keeping quiet about casting prospects.
The Jetsons was the story of a futuristic family living in a world run by sprockets ... and that was about it, really. Each week, George Jetson would get fired, promoted, you name it -- and then head home to his family which consisted of the perfect housewife, a genius son and boy-crazy daughter. Their dog would mispronounce words; the robot maid would get a few wisecracks in and voila! A cartoon classic was born.
I'm not a big Jetsons fan, but I do love to play fantasy casting director, so here are my picks for a live-action Jetsons:
George Jetson: Steve Carell
Despite having a spotty record on the big-screen, Carell proved once before that he can walk away from a TV adaptation with his dignity intact. He not only has the look down, but he can play a lovable loser with the best of them and has a knack for physical comedy. What more could you ask for in a George Jetson?
Jane Jetson: Reese Witherspoon
Jane wasn't exactly a ditz, but let's just say she wasn't the sharpest sprocket in the pile either. Witherspoon has made bank on playing these kinds of characters in the past, and I think she has just the right amount of uptight to be the doting wife (and straight man) to her wackier better half.

Will There Be a Live-Action 'Akira' After All?
It's not as if this is the first time there has been talk of a live-action version of the anime classic Akira. Back in 2003, a script had been written by James Robinson and Stephen Norrington signed to direct -- but that did not last long, and there hasn't been a peep out of the project since ... until now. Bloody Disgusting's sources are reporting that Warner Bros. has not given up yet on the project. Far from it, in fact; they have now hired Irish director Ruairi Robinson to helm the flick. The 29-year-old has only directed two short films so far, one of which got him nominated for an Oscar. But it was his sci-fi short The Silent City starring Cillian Murphy that got the director noticed by WB, according to BD's sources.Akira was released back in 1988 and was based on the manga series by Katsuhiro Otomo. Based on the original storyline of the comics, Akira centered on a post-nuclear Tokyo overrun with gangs and social unrest. If you haven't seen the film, believe me, it's a pretty complicated storyline and frankly defies a quick summation. But since it is considered one of the best anime films of all time, it's worth your while to give it a viewing. According to BD's report, WB is trying to get the film off the ground pre-strike (which sounds pretty ambitious if you ask me). This is all just speculation at this point, so stay tuned until we hear something official -- or until another four years have gone by and the rumor is resurrected one more time.
