Horror Sequel Outrage: 'Lost Boys 2: The Tribe'
Filed under: Horror », Warner Brothers », Home Entertainment », Remakes and Sequels »

If it had any other title, Lost Boys 2: The Tribe wouldn't provoke any outrage. But if it had any other title, would anybody give it a second glance? I harbored a ray of hope, but it doesn't take very long to realize that Lost Boys 2: The Tribe was always destined for the direct to video garbage heap.
The 1987 original, photographed by the superbly talented Michael Chapman, was super stylish and jammed with juicy performances, cynical wisecracks, and post-modern tweaks to cinematic vampire legends. The best idea was placing fanged lords of the night in a sun-soaked California coastal town populated by aging hippies and freaks, not to mention a boardwalk, rollercoaster, and great, crashing surf.
As a budget sequel, LB2 has to make do with less attractive, less flattering video imagery and the rockier Canadian coastline standing in for "Santa Carla" * (actually, Santa Cruz, California). The script by Hans Rodionoff makes some half-hearted attempts to tie in the original (antlers and motorcycles, anyone?), but is bereft of any new twists of its own. Director P. J. Pesce makes certain to include the obligatory amount of gore required to justify the so-called "uncut" version, with notable attention to ripped throats and spilled intestines, along with bared body parts displayed by lovelies such as Moneca Delain. LB2 has precisely two good moments -- one in the opening scene, provided by Tom Savini -- stranded within 94 minutes of running time.
Grab Some Kleenex, Corey Haim is OUT of 'Lost Boys 2'

Once again, more signs that it's a slow, post-holiday news day: Cinematical reports on fairly old Corey Haim direct-to-video rumors. It doesn't get any lower than this folks ... and I officially feel dirty. Help? Someone? Mommy? ShockTillYouDrop claims to have the official word that, contrary to a number of earlier reports, Corey Haim will not have a cameo in the DTV sequel for Lost Boys 2. I know what you're thinking -- the dude is back on the wagon. Actually, apparently not -- instead, they cite Haim's recent "immigration snafu." A snafu? There was a snafu? Indeed there was. According to another report issued by the MTV Movies Blog (oh, everyone is all over this puppy!), Haim's manager had called them to say that the actor was having problems when it came to entering and leaving the country. See, Lost Boys 2 is shooting in Vancouver. And, for whatever reason, Haim couldn't get there. But here's my question: Didn't his recent reality show, The Two Coreys, shoot in Vancouver? And, um, wasn't he able to leave the country for that? This, in turn, raises larger issues: Are our immigration officials prejudice against vampires? I don't know about you, but I'd like an official inquiry.
At the time of MTV's report, Warner Bros. was working hard to resolve the "immigration snafu." However, if ShockTillYouDrop is to be believed (and I see no reason why not -- they're usually pretty good about their scoops), the snafu (yes, I love writing that word) was not resolved in time. If Haim's tears were staged before, I'm pretty positive his latest tears were the real deal. No role. No money. Sh*t, I'd cry. Good news is that Corey Feldman is still signed on to shoot a role, and from what we hear, he's currently out in Vancouver doing just that as we speak. No word on whether Haim will be replaced by a Haim look-a-like (could it get any worse for an actor then to land a role based on the fact that he looks like Corey Haim?), but you bet your arse we'll be letting you know as soon as more info is available.
Casting Bites: Nutcrackers, Beasts and Much, Much More!

There's lots of small casting announcements popping up over the last few days -- some of which might make you oooo, ahhh or possibly convulse in repulsion:- Back in May, I told you that John Turturro was going to be the Evil Mouse King in the upcoming film, Nutcracker: The Untold Story. Since then, it seems that the name has been changed to Nutcracker: The True Story (I guess they weren't getting enough cred with the untold version), Variety reports that Odyssey Entertainment will take care of international sales and the cast has been completed. When word first came out, Turturro was joined by Nathan Lane and Elle Fanning. Now the list includes the wonderful Richard E. Grant added as Father, and Frances de la Tour added as the Rat Mother/Fraulein Eva.
- Autumn Reeser, Taylor from The OC, has been added to the cast of the much-feared Lost Boys 2: The Tribe. If you remember, this film is going to deal with vampire surfers, and rumor was that both of the Coreys were going to be in it. In a bit of unoriginality, she'll play a girl who moves with her brother to Trinidad, California and is seduced by the leader of the vamp surfers. Can she live up to the likes of Jason Patric and Jami Gertz?
- Jessica Walter, who you might remember as Lucille Bluth* on Arrested Development, is going to play Luke Wilson's mother in the upcoming Henry Poole is Here. The film is about a depressed and terminally-ill man whose life is changed by a miracle -- seeing a stain on the wall that looks like the face of Christ. Jesus shows up in the strangest of places.. I imagine Lucille making the poor guy's life hell, but it seems that this mom is more focused on Wilson's lack of ambition and interest in other people. Anyhow, you can check out more info on the film in our posts here, here and here.
- Rounding things out -- Mark Feuerstein, Mia Wasikowska and Ravil Isyanov have joined Defiance, the Holocaust drama, Lindsey Kraft has signed on to See You in September and Melissa Keller is joining Brian Austin Green in an indie thriller called Breaking Point. (How exciting is that?)
Corey Haim Cries Upon Hearing He's Not In 'Lost Boys 2'
Filed under: Fandom », Home Entertainment », Remakes and Sequels »
Wow, either this is Corey Feldman and Corey Haim doing some hysterical improv, or this is Corey Feldman and Corey Haim during one of their lamest moments ever. You may have heard there's a new "celeb-reality" show hitting A&E (and called The Two Coreys) that features Feldman and Haim all grown up, (and sharing a house together?). Well, a clip from the show has popped up on MySpace -- it shows Feldman breaking the news to his friend that a Lost Boys 2 is in the works, and their participation was not needed. Feldman tells Haim that he was asked to perform a cameo, but rejected it when they wouldn't allow his buddy to appear in the film as well. From there, Haim just loses it -- he gets all choked up, pulls Feldman in for one of those "thanks for getting my back" hugs, and -- sniff, sniff -- begins to cry.
Dude, it's a straight-to-DVD Lost Boys sequel! Are you kidding me!? You're crying? While seeing these two back together again conjures up all sorts of great childhood memories, I couldn't help but chuckle during their Lost Boys "moment." I mean, after all, these two really are a couple of lost boys ... in more ways than one. But I also have to wonder whether this whole thing was real, or if it was just an act. VHI recently kicked off a similar show in which they follow around '80s hunk Scott Baio with a camera while he visits all of his ex-girlfriends in an attempt to find out why all his relationships go sour. (I know, I watch lame TV shows. Big deal. Wanna fight about it?) After watching one episode, it was pretty obvious that this wasn't a straight reality show; that at least certain aspects of it were staged and/or scripted. Could the same thing be going on with Feldman and Haim? Did some director-type tell them to talk about Lost Boys 2 and cry? All I know is that there was a time when Haim was on way too many drugs to function; perhaps the rehab and 12-step programs turned him into an emotional mess. Either way, it's nice to see both of these guys healthy again. And I'll watch the show anyway, while singing: "Get out of my dreams ... and into my car ... "
Lost Boys 2: When Vampires Surf
Filed under: Horror », Warner Brothers », Home Entertainment », Remakes and Sequels »
Ever since Joel Schumacher's The Lost Boys became a fairly big hit back in 1987, fans have clamored for a sequel. For years we heard vague rumors about a potential follow-up called The Lost Girls (a script for which was allegedly penned by none other than Joss Whedon), but obviously it never came to pass -- which seems kind of weird considering that The Lost Boys grossed over $32 million domestically before turning into one of the most widely watched cable flicks of all time. (Then again it's always tough to do a sequel to an ensemble piece, particularly when half your original cast went on to become, well, instant has-beens.)But now, according to exclusive word from IESB.net, it looks like we'll finally be getting that Lost Boys sequel -- only it looks to be arriving in direct-to-video form. All we seem to know so far is that a) production will begin in San Diego very soon and b) the plot has something to do with Surfer Vampires. Yep, vamps on boards. Throw some bank robberies in and we could call it Point Break 2: The Lost Vampire Surfer Gang.
More details as they become available, although if you think Jason Patric or Kiefer Sutherland are coming back for a DTV sequel, well, you're nuts. The interest/availability of Corey Haim, Corey Feldman and Jami Gertz might be an entirely different story.
