Was 'Hulk' Director Offered New 'Superman' Gig???

Filed under: Action », Deals », RumorMonger », Fandom », DIY/Filmmaking », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

There was an interview with Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier over at AlloCiné (via AICN) in which someone threw out a number of different sequels (Spider-Man, Superman, Indiana Jones), and (I think) asked if he'd be interested in directing any of them. Now, according to someone who wrote in to AICN, Leterrier stopped at Superman and said something like ... "maybe they have already asked me." We here at Cinematical have watched the video in question (you can too over here), and he definitely does look at the camera, smile and say something regarding the Superman sequel. I don't speak French, though, but it appears as if that's the correct translation.

So, has Warners already talked to Leterrier about possibly directing the next Superman movie? And is Leterrier the big-name action director Wanted's Mark Millar mentioned when he recently talked up his own Superman project? As AICN points out, Leterrier is currently working on the Clash of the Titans remake for Warners, so it seems reasonable for them to also talk to him about Superman. Is DC trying to steal a Marvel guy? Interesting development ...

What say you? Would Leterrier do a better job than Singer on Superman?

UPDATE: Leterrier contacted AICN and said the following: "What I meant was that I had been told about a possible reinvention of Superman. Not that I was offered the job." Take that as you will ...

Warring Tentpoles: 'Gods' vs. 'Titans'

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels », War »

I love when stuff like this happens: Armageddon vs. Deep Impact. 1492: Conquest of Paradise vs. Christopher Columbus: The Discovery. Umm, Vice Versa vs. Like Father Like Son. You know what I mean: When two very similar movies from two very different movie studios hit the theaters at just about the same time. And according to Variety, it looks to be happening again, this time with a pair of Greek Mythology-type movies. Of all things. We get none of 'em for two decades and then all of a sudden everyone wants to bang one out. It's good news for me, though. I love this stuff.

In one corner we have WB's Clash of the Titans remake, which will be directed by Louis Leterrier and written by Lawrence Kasdan. We all know a bit about Clash of the Titans, or at least I hope we do, so let's focus on the other corner: Here we have the very intriguing War of Gods, which Relativity Media is prepping for Tarsem Singh to direct. According to Variety, it's "a mythological tale set in war-torn Ancient Greece, as the young warrior prince Theseus leads his men in a battle against evil that will see the gods fighting with soldiers against demons and titans." Whoa. Yes, please.

Both flicks are looking to use the 300-style approach to bring their ancient worlds and creatures to life, both aim to start production before the end of the year, and both will probably make a whole lot of money. I mean seriously: We need more epics about Greek Mythology. Call me a nerd, but those stories are freaking cool!

'Hulk''s Louis Leterrier Lines Up 'Strays'

Strays seems like one of those concepts that sounds very cool on paper but winds up being little more than a depressingly ordinary zombie movie (think Resident Evil). The Hollywood Reporter summary: "a group of young consultants on a business trip to Russia mysteriously wake up in an abandoned and radioactive city and fight to survive the deadly obstacles in between them and safety." The project, written by Michael Ross (the almost-decent Turistas), is described as an "eco action thriller," though who knows what that actually means. It sounds more like a "nuclear apocalypse action thriller."

Summit Entertainment, the studio developing Strays, is trying to sign Louis Leterrier to direct the film. Since the Frenchman is a hot commodity after this weekend's The Incredible Hulk opened big -- and since up until now he was, as far as we know, unattached as far as his next project -- this probably means that Summit is serious about getting Strays to the screen. Works for me, even if I'll always know Leterrier as "the guy who was hired to make the Hulk dumber." (Bitter? Me?) As one of the few folks around who enjoyed The Happening at least somewhat, I'm in an eco thriller mood.

Review: The Incredible Hulk

Here are a few statistics on the 2003 film Hulk:

So I ask you this: Are we talking about a failure ... or an underrated movie that's been unjustly labeled a failure? It matters not, I suppose, because the arrival of the all-new The Incredible Hulk, Marvel (and Universal) hopes to leave the first Hulk cowering in a dusty vault somewhere. (Until the next DVD re-release, of course.) So while I felt a strange bit of resentment towards this "forget that first movie, let's get a do-over" procedure, I felt pretty confident about the second Hulk's chances. Director Louis Leterrier has shown some skill with action flicks like Unleashed and Transporter 2, the new cast (which includes Edward Norton, Tim Roth, Liv Tyler and William Hurt) was pretty impressive, and (best of all) the producers were making one simple promise from the outset: More action.

Captain America in 'The Incredible Hulk'?

Filed under: Action », New Releases », Universal », RumorMonger », Fandom », Newsstand », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

Director Louis Leterrier swears up and down that Captain America makes an appearance in The Incredible Hulk -- but at this point, it just isn't clear how you may see it. In an interview with Collider, Leterrier declared that it was just an Easter Egg and refused to give any hints as to where it would appear in order to keep the fun. "It's an Easter egg. It's not like oh, it's Captain America and it changes everything. It's still a Hulk movie, but it's really Captain America and it's there, you'll see. It's the real deal. You have to look for it."

'The Incredible Hulk' Goes Unscripted!

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Fandom », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels », Unscripted », Trailers and Clips »

With The Incredible Hulk out this Friday (June 13), stars Edward Norton, Liv Tyler and director Louis Leterrier sat down for another one of Moviefone's fabulous Unscripted segments. The great part about these Moviefone Unscripted sessions is that not only do the stars and filmmakers ask each other questions, but most of those questions are from you, the reader -- because you left them in the comments section of this very blog! OMG! But anyway, above you will find an exclusive clip from their chat (one you won't see over at Moviefone), where all three talk about the importance of getting "the eyes" right, since, as Liv says, they're "the window to the soul." And I totally agree, especially when it comes to CG characters like Hulk and Abomination. Interestingly enough, because of certain techniques used, the eyes on Hulk and Abomination are "pretty much" the eyes of stars Edward Norton and Tim Roth, according to Leterrier.

Interesting conversation all around; head on over to Moviefone to check out the rest.

Confirmed: Lou Ferrigno Voicing 'The Incredible Hulk'

Filed under: Action », Fandom », DIY/Filmmaking », Newsstand », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

Back at New York Comic Con earlier this year, there was this very odd moment during The Incredible Hulk panel when Lou Ferrigno surprised everyone in the crowd and director Louis Leterrier had the old, TV Hulk scream out a little "Hulk smash!" for the fans. Half-jokingly, Leterrier then said Ferrigno would be the voice of the Hulk in the new film. Those of us in the crowd didn't really know what to think: Was Leterrier being serious? Were they just messing with us? Well, according to a new interview over in Variety, it would appear that Ferrigno is, indeed, voicing the Hulk.

When asked if we "finally get to hear a good 'Hulk smash!,'" Marvel's Kevin Feige and producer Gale Ann Hurd noted, "Yes. After five TV seasons, several TV movies and the first feature, Hulk will speak. (Yeah, he had a line in the Ang Lee film, but it was a dream.) Hulk's verbal skills and intelligence have varied in the comics, but he's never been as mute as the TV version. So it's a little ironic that TV Hulk Lou Ferrigno will give voice to the Hulk in this film. Producer Gale Ann Hurd says Ferrigno was a last-minute addition to a panel on the movie at New York's Comic-Con. Director Leterrier invited him to "audition" onstage. "Lou did this amazing, 'Hulk smash!' " says Hurd. "And (director Louis Leterrier) said, 'Come in, we'll record you next week.' Everybody thought it was either a staged event or we wouldn't really do it. But the next week Lou came in in L.A. and his voice is the voice of the Hulk."

Do you think the Hulk should speak in the new film? The Incredible Hulk hits screens on June 13.

Your 'Incredible Hulk' Questions Answered (Possibly!)

Filed under: Action », Universal », Fandom », Newsstand », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

Somehow this feature slipped right by me -- hopefully, it slipped by you too so that this post's existence is justified.

Now that the dust has settled on the new trailer for The Incredible Hulk, you might have a few questions about it -- like "What's up with Abomination?" or "Who's that guy?" or "Why does it look all unfinished?" Just don't ask "Why didn't I like it?" because there are no answers for your worries, my friends.

Well, director Louis Leterrier has answers. In an Empire exclusive, he takes viewers frame by frame through the trailer and explains what is going on, why he did what he did, and that, no, the effects aren't done. Oh yeah, and that the final fight between Hulk and Abomination will be a doozy: "Our final battle – unlike a normal movie where the final fight scene is six minutes long, ours is 26 minutes long! So you get 26 minutes of two monsters pummelling each other through New York City, jumping up and down, ripping helicopters from the sky and stuff. You know, lots of green blood on the street, splashed all around. So it's pretty cool."

26 minutes? Wow, I think I'm tired just reading that, let alone watching it. Still, at least this isn't a movie where the Hulk rips Wolverine in half -- then we'd never get an ending at all ...

Ed Norton Wants Hulk Franchise

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Universal », Fandom », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

Universal has to be really hoping The Incredible Hulk is better received than 2003's Hulk, because according to Edward Norton, the 2008 comic book adaptation is expected to be the first of many. The actor talked exclusively with Total Film magazine and had this to say: "To me the whole thing was to envision it in multiple parts. We left a lot out on purpose. It's definitely intended as chapter one." (Quote retrieved from Ace Showbiz.) You may recall that Norton himself wrote the final draft of the screenplay for The Incredible Hulk, so he would know what was "left out." He could also be hinting that he means to write the sequels as well. But what happens if this version of the Marvel comic is not successful? Will it feel incomplete if it ultimately exists as a dead end?

It is hard to imagine just how much better The Incredible Hulk will be than Ang Lee's film, which really only failed because of a badly rendered Hulk and a truly awful climax. The title character will still be computer animated and the story could still have a disappointing denouement (we've never really witnessed Norton's writing skill before), and it's not unfair to say that Louis Leterrier is not quite as talented a director as Lee. Norton seems quite confident that he's going to deliver something possibly comparable to Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins in quality and tone, but it's easy for comic book geeks to be skeptical. Only 3% of Cinematical readers expect The Incredible Hulk to be the best comic book film of 2008. While that's not surprising since we've also got The Dark Knight and Iron Man to look forward to this summer, it still makes me wonder how many moviegoers expect The Incredible Hulk to be any good at all. So, I ask you:

Do you think 'The Incredible Hulk' will be good?

The Incredible Hulk Gets "Official" Release Date

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Deals », Newsstand », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

As we reported before, Marvel is hoping you might forget about the recent Ang Lee version of Hulk (released only 3 years ago, btw) and instead focus your attention on the latest incarnation-- now called The Incredible Hulk. For those of you not paying attention in class, here's what we know so far:

Zak Penn, writer of X-Men: The Last Stand and the upcoming The Avengers, is handling the script. Louis Leterrier, director of The Transporter 2 and Unleashed, will be sitting in the director's chair. Eric Bana will most likely not be returning and neither will Jennifer Connolly or Nick Nolte. Or, one would assume, anyone else associated with the last film -- save Exec. Producers Stan Lee and Avi Arad. Lastly, the film will not be so much a sequel as a ... word I really don't like to use. Ok, fine, it's a re-imagining and not a sequel. There, I said it. And now we can add one more bit of news to the ever-increasing pile -- an official release date for the film.

Ready to mark your calendars? The release date is June 27th, 2008. Not too long for you, I hope. I, for one, can't wait to see what this new team comes up with. I like Zak Pen as a writer and he's done a pretty good job so far with his comic book adaptations (well, except for Elektra -- although it was far better than Daredevil -- so there you go) and Leterrier really showed his skills with action and exciting fight sequences in The Transporter films. Hopefully, the combination of those two guys can take the bad taste out of our collective mouths from the last time this character was in theaters.

Casting is currently underway for The Incredible Hulk. No word yet on a start date for filming but my guess is early next year.

So, will The Incredible Hulk be a winner, or more of the same?
