Will Lucas Extend His 'Star Wars' Story Beyond 'Return of the Jedi'?

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », RumorMonger », Fandom », DIY/Filmmaking », Newsstand », George Lucas », Remakes and Sequels »

Now that George Lucas and his crew are preparing to launch the first big-screen Star Wars flick in all CGI, some folks are wondering whether that means he'd be down to eventually continue the saga where Return of the Jedi left off -- especially since it wouldn't be hard to bring back original actors like Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher to do the voice work. Fans, of course, would publicly bash such a move ... even if they'd secretly been wishing for the return of Luke, Leia and Han for years. So, would Lucas do it? Is he considering it?

In a new interview with the Los Angeles Times, the Sith King himself claims there will be no such film from him. Lucas says, "There really isn't any story to tell there. It's been covered in the books and video games and comic books, which are things I think are incredibly creative but that I don't really have anything to do with other than being the person who built the sandbox they're playing in." He continues, "I get asked all the time, 'What happens after "Return of the Jedi"?,' and there really is no answer for that. The movies were the story of Anakin Skywalker and Luke Skywalker, and when Luke saves the galaxy and redeems his father, that's where that story ends." Star Wars: The Clone Wars arrives in theaters on August 15, then heads to Cartoon Network and TNT for a weekly series.

Would you rather see a CGI Star Wars flick that takes place during The Clone Wars or after Return of the Jedi?

Mark Hamill Puns About Heath Ledger's Joker

Now that the The Dark Knight trailer has been making the rounds for a while, with Heath Ledger's Joker wowing everyone from fans to filmmakers, it's time for Mark Hamill to throw his opinions into the ring. If you're not a big animated series fan, this might seem weird -- what does Luke Skywalker have to do with the Joker? Well, Hamill has been the voice behind the character for years now -- most notably on Batman: The Animated Series. (Hear him in action here.) So, MTV recently caught up with the quirky Clown Prince, and he had some nice things to say about the most recent Joker incarnation.

"For all those fans that dreamed of an adult approach to the material, Batman Begins got nearly everything right. I have no doubt this one will be just as good or better." Unfortunately, there's no word on what he thinks the first got wrong, but he does say of Christopher Nolan's changes to the character: "The balls-out debauched psycho approach seems like a great way of reinventing everyone's favorite scary (and scar-y) clown." Ah, punning goodness!

So Hamill can't wait to see Ledger in action. Can you? Do you like the eerie way that Nolan has taken the character, and that Ledger is playing him, or are you wishing that Hamill got to make his Joker large and live-action? Or that you'd get more Jack Nicholson? Or maybe someone else?

Mark Hamill to Bring Luke Skywalker Back to the Small Screen!

Filed under: Animation », Comedy », Casting », Deals », Fandom », Newsstand », George Lucas », Comic/Superhero/Geek »

Call it a coincidence or call it fate, but three minutes after finishing my post on that horrific Star Wars trailer, this little nugget showed up in my RSS feeds. According to CNN, Mark Hamill has agreed to resurrect Luke Skywalker for -- wait for it -- a thirty-minute Robot Chicken special on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. Not only that, but George Lucas (who, of course, had to give the greenlight) will play himself in the special. Imagine that one! Lucas has lightened up. I love it! Apart from acting, Lucasfilm helped collaborate with Chicken creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, going so far as to provide them with sound files on Chewbacca and R2-D2. The special, Robot Chicken: Star Wars, will premiere on Adult Swim this June 17 at 10PM EST.

I've never been a huge fan of Seth Green, but the man earned a ton of respect from me when his Robot Chicken hit the boob tube last year (or was it the year before, I forget?). The show, which utilizes a stop-motion animation technique, is so ridiculously funny that I often find myself laughing so loud, my neighbors are forced to bang on the wall. This entire special came about after Robot Chicken featured a skit called Emperor's Phone Call, in which Darth Vader calls the Emperor to let him know the Death Star has been blown up. When reps from Lucasfilm wanted the sketch for StarWars.com, a meeting was held between Green, Senreich and Lucasfilm, they pitched their ideas and, now, Luke Skywalker is coming back! Now, don't get too excited -- it's not like Hamill will bring back Luke for the upcoming animated Star Wars TV show, but knowing those Chicken boys, I'm sure this one-time appearance will be worth a watch.
