Discuss: Why Does Everyone Hate Kirsten Dunst?

Well, Spider-Man is back in the headlines and it's official: Kirsten Dunst will be back for another turn as Peter Parker's main squeeze, Mary Jane. Now this might sound odd, but I feel like I've spent a lot of time defending Kirsten Dunst over the years. Not to the population at large mind you, but when you have those discussions with friends or family or maybe even the occasional reader out there about the actors you like or dislike, Dunst always shoots to the top of the Yuck, I So Hate Her list. That's why, today, I'm here to ask the big question of all you haters out there: What did Kirsten Dunst ever do to you?
Do a quick search on the internet for Dunst and stories pop up about stints in rehab (and it didn't help that her name worked so well with drunk), body snark on a level that would make a mean girl blush, and just about every unflattering comment you can think of -- for goodness sake, some of the sleazier wags out there thought the proof of Jake Gyllenhaal's homosexuality was the fact that he was dating her. But today I will come out of the closet and proclaim: My name is Jessica and I like Kirsten Dunst.
After the jump: find out why, and my picks for her top five films...
Sexy Mary Jane Statue Causes Quite the Stir

Perhaps we're just a tad late to the game on this one, but I simply had to add in my two cents about the brand new hot-to-trot statue of Spider-Man's main gal Mary Jane. For those who aren't yet aware of this priceless collectible, you can check it out to the right of your screen. Yup, that's Mary Jane holding her man's Spidey costume and casually bending over a wash-bucket with a pink thong riding high up on her waist. Created by comic-book illustrator Adam Hughes, the limited-edition Comiquette comes from Sideshow Collectibles and is licensed by Marvel. And if you're interested in placing Ms. Mary Jane in your living room (right next to your Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 2.1 DVDs, I imagine), then she'll set you back a crisp $125.
Not surprisingly, bloggers everywhere are all up in arms over this trashy, yet smokin' hot version of Mary Jane. Hughes hilariously describes his creation as "Mary Jane discover[ing] that her superhero husband has slipped some of his laundry into the mix, but she's not looking too displeased about Peter's naughty little transgression." Funnily enough, all the outrage has done nothing by spark a feeding frenzy; the statue (which is available through the Collectibles web site) has already sold out, with a waiting list recently added. Now here's where I get to tell you what I think. First off, who cares? The majority of folks who actually buy these statues are geeked-out males (or fanboys) who like to steal a peak at their purchase while surfing for the latest Star Trek fan art. (And based on some of the fan art I've seen, this statue is quite tame). I see nothing wrong with it; she's not naked, she's not revealing too much (unlike a certain "rain scene" from one of the films) and, quite simply, she looks good. Thoughts?
Kirsten Dunst's Breasts Were An Issue With 'Spider-Man 3,' She Says

Despite the fact that we all pretty much saw her boobs in the first Spider-Man, Kirsten Dunst apparently had to make them look bigger for Spider-Man 3. She told The Sun that she had to wear a padded bra and that she had no problem doing so. She says she doesn't think it's sexist -- she actually "embraced" the bigger bosom -- and is fully aware that her character's chest is enhanced for the action figures. Of course, the practice of augmenting female features is nothing even remotely new, but it continues to be an issue worth mentioning. Just last week there was a lot of fuss over the posters for the IMAX 3-D version of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix because Emma "Hermione" Watson's breasts had been re-sized (Warner Bros. claims the poster was not authorized and it has since been removed from the Imax website). If you remember a few years back, a similar issue was brought up regarding Keira Knightley's cup size with the poster for King Arthur.
Dunst also told The Sun that her character helped her to grow in other areas. She says the role has helped her to become a better actress and is very glad that the character was written as more complex than she is depicted as in the comics. Dunst even states that she would like to continue playing Mary Jane, though only if Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire return with her for Spider-Man 4 (we already know she thinks it'd be a flop without them all). Finally, Dunst confirmed to The Sun that her next project is the Marla Ruzicka film, Sweet Relief, which we first heard about a year and a half ago (and heard a little more about a few weeks ago). While the actress cites the Spidey films as the most important so far in her growth as an actress, I imagine that this more-serious role will require her to grow even more if she actually hopes to do the real-life aid worker justice.
Major Spidey 3 Spoilers

There's nothing like having a highly-anticipated film ruined for you long before the pic is even set to hit theaters. With that said, I must warn you that the following information contains monumental Spider-Man 3 spoilers. And when I say monumental, I'm talking about who will live, who will die -- to put it plainly -- how the film will end. If you're the type of person who doesn't want to know those things ahead of time, then by all means do not continue reading ... or click on the link that I'm about to share with you. Understand? Spoilers. Lots of them. You've been warned.
So, Brendon over at Film Ick says he's been provided with "lots of information" with regards to the super duper finale in Spider-Man 3. I won't go into too much detail here, but let's just say a major fight takes place at a construction site (I imagine because there are plenty of metal things to swing off of) and a number of different characters are involved: Spidey, Sandman, Eddie Brock as Venom, Mary Jane, Sandman's daughter and Harry Osborn. Brendon shovels out as many details as he can regarding the battle (some of it is speculation since his source only provided him with so much information), but all of it makes sense.
And, based on what goes down at that construction site, it certainly raises a lot of questions -- mainly, would a Spider-Man 4 even be worth it?
MJ and Gwen Are Friends

In a move which baffled many Spider-Man fans, Sam Raimi and company chose to introduce Gwen Stacy into the film franchise in the third installment. Stacy, of course, is well known among True Believers for being Peter Parker's first true love, and her tragic death sent shock waves throughout the geek community. For the movie franchise, Stacy's existence was initially ignored, and MJ was instead chosen for Peter's first girl; hence the raised eyebrows of fans when Stacy was announced for the new film as a rival love interest.ComingSoon recently spoke with Kirsten Dunst about the competition, and Dunst assured them it was on-screen only. In fact, she thoroughly enjoys having another major female character on set, as it gives her "a girl to share all the testosterone with." Discussing the character of Stacy, Dunst said: "Her character adds another type of woman that puts Peter in a position obviously with conflict with me and lying and this and all of those things just create more drama in our relationships." Dunst also said she was glad to have a year off between films, because the time away allowed her to truly renew her excitement for the franchise.
