Scarlett and Woody Together Again? Yep

Filed under: Comedy », Foreign Language », Independent », Casting »

I'm not a complete Woody Allen snob, but I am picky and I haven't been satisfied with any of his films since Sweet and Lowdown. For me to have liked even Match Point I would have had to lower my standards and expectations, and in the end I decided it didn't work for me. One of my problems with it is Scarlett Johansson, who I may never be able to enjoy as an actress. As a handbag model she's great, sure, but as someone who has to portray any feelings on the big screen she can't get my attention. I don't avoid her work, though, because some of her films are good despite her. I couldn't bother with Allen's Scoop, but now the filmmaker has cast the actress in another film, his untitled Spanish project, which I'm at least intrigued about.

So far we had learned that Allen would be shooting in Barcelona and Asturias this summer with the great Spanish actors Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz. His new additions include Johansson and her co-star from The Prestige, Rebecca Hall. This will now be Johansson's third film for Allen, putting her closer to the level of collaboration as Louise Lasser, Diane Keaton and Mia Farrow, all of whom Allen had been involved with romantically. I'm not saying that Soon-Yi should be worried, at least if she doesn't mind Allen simply looking, but it is a bit strange. Following this film, Allen will return to England for his next film, which will go into production in 2008, hopefully without Johansson.

Scarlett Johansson, Athletic-Fashion Icon?

Filed under: Comedy », Deals », Scarlett Johansson »

Quick, when you think "athletic fashion", who's the first person you think of? If you guessed, "Scarlett Johansson", then Reebok made the right bet. According to Ad Week, Reebok has signed a multi-year deal with Woody Allen's new favorite go-to girl to create the Scarlett "Hearts" Rbk line, which will feature (and I'm not making this up) "head-to-toe looks designed to take today's multi-dimensional woman from the studio to the street in style." I'm not sure exactly what a "multi-dimensional woman" is, but I bet there are some guys around here who'd like one.

Johansson is reportedly "enthusiastic" about working with Reebok on the line. Reebok president and CEO Paul Harrington characterized her as a "world-renowned style icon". Well, that makes sense, I guess, because when I think 'haute couture", I think "Reebok", don't you? Johansson will also be featured in a global women's advertising blitz for Reebok beginning in 2007, so if you just haven't had enough of her on-screen, you'll be getting more Scarlett than you can shake your ... tennis racket at.

Film Clips: Flying First Class at the Movies

As I was perusing my fave film sites this afternoon in an all-too-brief moment of quiet downtime, I came across a bit on Roger Ebert's site about Silent Hill director Christophe Gans lashing out in this month's Electronic Gaming Monthly about Ebert's opinion that video games are not art. Now, I am not a video game person (honestly, I just don't have the spatial ability to play them well, as my six-year-old son can well tell you), but what drew me to Ebert's reply was the end of it, where he notes, "the older I get, the more prudent I become in how I spend my time." Ebert concludes his response to Gans with an homage to his friend, the late Gene Siskel, who once said that nobody on their deathbed ever thinks, "I'm glad I always flew tourist."

New On DVD - Aeon Flux, Casanova, Final Fantasy VII

Filed under: New Releases », DVD Reviews », New on DVD », Home Entertainment », Columns »

  • Æon Flux - This empty sci-fi flick's listing on IMDB.com is loaded with glowing user endorsements, leading everyone else who has seen it to believe that either drugs were involved in forming these opinions, the Pod People took these users over or an army of undercover PR lackeys is spinning overtime. This cinematic equivalent of a bronzed cow pie, an unimaginative Logan's Run pretender set 400 years in the future after a global plague, stars Charlize Theron as a rebel trying to take down the corrupt government of Bregna, the only city on Earth. From the way-lazy back story title cards and opening narration to the silly costumes to the cartoonish action sequences to the awful deadpan performances, this should be called Peed-On, Sux. Maybe Theron's mother needed an operation or something, but this is a very bad and brainless example of sci-fi, a puffed-up issue movie that ultimately offers nothing but regret. Instead, check out creator Peter Chung's original, pre-anime craze animated MTV series, which was released on DVD late last year.

Woody was Just Kidding About That Whole Paris Thing

Filed under: Drama », Fandom », Newsstand »

Oops. Michelle Williams? David Krumholtz? Cancel those Paris plane tickets, and never mind about that job. Look at this way -- now, instead of counting your money and adding "Starred in a Woody Allen movie" to your list of accomplishments, you can go look for work! Ah, the struggles of life in Hollywood. It turns out, you see, that Allen's mysterious (the people at Variety are hilariously pleased with themselves for uncovering the fact that it was going to be about "Americans in Gaul." Gee, ya think?) Paris project isn't actually, um, happening any more. According to elusive insiders, the budget was getting out of control, so Woody just punted and ran back to London, his new favorite city in all the world.

Now, instead of filming in Paris, Allen is going to shoot a third film in London (Match Point was filmed there, as was the upcoming Scoop) before heading off to Spain next year, where he has already agreed to mount a production. (He's 71, by the way. How is he more active than I am?)

Lookout gets a Wedding Crasher

Filed under: Drama », Independent », Thrillers », Casting », Newsstand », Scarlett Johansson », Cinematical Indie »

It was announced late last year that The Lookout, screenwriter Scott Frank's directorial debut, had secured the considerable talents of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Jeff Daniels for its starring roles. Gordon-Levitt plays a disabled janitor who is caught up in a heist, while Daniels is a blind ex-biker who is also involved, though no one in the press seems to know exactly how. While the two of them alone certainly have the ability to carry a well-written film (and, since Frank wrote the script, it's good), it's now being reported that three impressive names have been added to the cast, and the movie is sounding better and better. Playing a criminal (presumably one involved in the heist) will be Matthew Goode, who won praise for his performance as Scarlett Johansson's boyfriend in Match Point, and another scene-stealer, Isla Fisher of Wedding Crashers, has been cast as "a scandalous vixen." (Boys, that one's for you.) Rounding out the trio of additions in the role of a therapist is the wonderful Carla Gugino who someday, maybe, will get the attention she deserves.

The movie is scheduled to begin filming in Canada later this month.

Cinephilia in Seattle: African Film Festival, Independent Exposure and early Ang Lee

Filed under: New Releases », Movie Marketing », Politics », Lists », Oscar Watch »

I like to think that my beautiful city of Seattle is home to so much wonderful film because there are so many brainy, intellectual film geeks here. In reality, it's probably as much because of the rainy weather here as anything else. Sure, we have an abundance of mainstream theaters like every other big city, but we also have lots of film that will feed your soul through the rest of your mundane week. Why settle for what's playing at the multiplex, when you can open the windows of your world through such a wide range of glorious world cinema, right here in your own backyard? We have lots of film here for the cinephile, and my fellow Emerald City residents will be able to come here to find out what's going on in film in Seattle,  every week, from now until the end of time. Well, maybe not until the end of time; life is impermanent. But film? Film is forever.

Cinematical Oscar Predictions: Pin the Oscar on the Donkey

Filed under: Awards », Scarlett Johansson », George Clooney », Oscar Watch »

As you know, the Oscar winners are determined by a highly secret, very scientific process guaranteed to ensure the very best of the nominees in each category will go home with the coveted statue of a naked golden man - and, let's be honest - who doesn't want a naked golden man on their bedside table or mantel? This year, as part of our extensive coverage of the awards show everyone loves to bitch about, we here at Cinematical headquarters are making our own highly scientific Oscar predictions in the top five categories, to assist you in placing bets with your bookies or office betting pools.

A few days ago, James Rocchi gave us his Oscar predictions, based on the Virtual Borgnine (tm), Rocchi's own invention based on the theory that Oscar winners are largely determined by old, rich, white men who have spent their whole lives in show business. Today, straight from the pristine lab located in my kitchen, we bring you Oscar predictions based on the Official Cinematical Pin the Oscar on the Donkey Oscar Prediction Game!

To assist me in the prediction process, I used my five assistants - my four (yup, I said four) younger children, ages 9, 6, 4 and 2, and my husband, Jay (he got to pick Best Picture, so I didn't have to deal with four kids fighting over who got to choose the last winner, but to keep it fair, the kids spun him around no less than 10 times. He's still recovering.) Each assistant was thoroughly blindfolded with an Oscar-worthy purple velveteen blindfold and spun around an appropriate number of times to ensure dizziness and slight nausea, which is pretty much what we feel when watching the Oscars anyhow. For purposes of determining the winner, the nominee that Oscar's head was closest to was judged to be the winner.

Without further ado, the Pin the Oscar on the Donkey Oscar Predictions:

Brokeback mounts small markets: Variety in 60 Seconds

Filed under: Gay & Lesbian », Executive shifts », Warner Brothers », Box Office », Focus Features », Home Entertainment »

  • Brokeback Mountain continues to expand into small markets, gaining slowly but surely in suburban and rural areas whilst its big-city box office starts to lose its lustre. Focus' strategy on this one seems to be working beautifully: Oscar buzz keeps getting louder as the picture, slowly but surely, rolls out wider, making for non-existant overall drop-offs even as the film runs out of first-time viewers in urban markets. In other specialty box office news: Cache is doing surprisingly well for a foreign offering, and Match Point is in line to break Woody Allen's previous box office records.
  • Warner Home Video is jumping into the Latino home entertainment market in a big way. They've created a new venture that will market Spanish language titles to US consumers, meaning only good things for the new wave of independent, South American filmmakers. It's an incredibly low-overhead gambit with tons of potential – the Spanish-language home video market has grown 83% in the past two years.
  • Elizabeth Guider looks into the bubbling controversy over studio exec paychecks, which, she writes, "like that of their confreres across all U.S. business sectors ... is rising disproportionately to that of their employees." The SEC's big problem in pursuing this, she says, is that the Hollywood's tendency to ascribe value to nebulous qualities such as star power make improprieties hard to guage. "Who's going to say Leslie Moonves, Peter Cherninand others of their stature aren't as valuable properties as Tom Cruise or Tom Hanks?"
