Aronofsky's 'Black Swan' Gains More Cast Members

Filed under: Horror », Thrillers »

By Alison Nastasi

Darren Aronofsky's latest film is a thriller with a supernatural twist. Black Swan is currently in pre-production and Slashfilm recently revealed full casting details for the film. It was already announced that Natalie Portman will star as Nina, a veteran ballerina competing against a mysterious rival dancer, Lily, played by Mila Kunis. As the dancers approach an important performance, Nina starts to question if her rival is a supernatural apparition or if she's having delusions and her identity starts to blur with that of her eerily similar competitor. To the absolute joy of fanboys everywhere, the film includes an "ecstasy-induced hungry, aggressive, angry sex" scene between Portman and Kunis. Having flashbacks to Requiem for a Dream yet?

Joining the cast of Black Swan will be Vincent Cassel, Winona Ryder and Barbara Hershey. Ryder plays Beth, Nina's frenemie who used to be the star dancer but is nearing the end of her career. Hmm. Cassel is the "handsome but sinister" (love him but no shocker here) Yevna who is the stage director and Hershey is Nina's mother.

Review: Extract

Filed under: Comedy », Theatrical Reviews », Miramax »

The latest comedy from Mike Judge, Extract, seems at first to be more conventional than his previous films, Office Space and Idiocracy. However, as the story becomes more complicated, its characters show hidden depths and the plot provides the type of bizarrely comic situations we've come to expect from the writer-director of Beavis and Butt-Head and King of the Hill.

The movie focuses on Joel (Jason Bateman), who owns a small extract factory in southern California. He and his wife Suzie (Kristen Wiig) are having trouble maintaining interest in one another, and he's considering the possibility of an affair. His potential lover is the mysterious Cindy (Mila Kunis), who has just arrived to work at the plant as a temp, but who is really a seasoned con artist with some other payoffs in mind. Joel confides in his bartender friend Dean (Ben Affleck), who tends to recommend medication for everything, legal or not. However, his suggestion about what Joel can do to not feel guilty about having an affair involves not pot or pills, but a trap for Suzie.

'Extract,' Mike Judge, and Moviefone

Filed under: Comedy », New Releases », Fandom », Miramax »

Jason Bateman in 'Extract'Following a packed advance screening of Extract, the new comedy by Mike Judge, in Dallas, Texas last night, the writer / filmmaker / animator was asked about his previous effort, Idiocracy. He admitted his disappointment that the film was so little publicized for its limited theatrical release three years ago: "When it opened in, like eight cities, someone told me that you couldn't look it up on Moviefone under its title," he related. "[The studio] didn't even want to pay the eight bucks or whatever to get a listing, so you had to search for 'Untitled Mike Judge Film' to find out where it was playing." Our own Jette Kernion wrote about the lack of publicity at the time.

Fortunately, Judge noted that Idiocracy has sold well on DVD, and Extract should be much easier to find when it opens on Friday, September 4. If I describe it as Judge's best work so far, it's not because he's "grown up" or "become more mature"; the film features some of his darkest comedy yet. Extract is very much a part of the Mike Judge Universe, where decent men enjoy working for a living but dream of escaping some day (Jason Bateman), where good women sometimes go bad (Kristen Wiig, Mila Kunis), and where most everyone is good-hearted but dumber than a pet rock (Ben Affleck, J.K. Simmons, Clifton Collins, Jr.). In other words, Extract is another funny, unpredictable comedy featuring recognizable, everyday people, like the guy who's sleeping on your couch right now, drinking two-liter bottles of Pepsi and watching TV all day.

More tidbits from the Q&A after the jump.

Good News, Pervs! 'Black Swan' Has a Portman-Kunis Sex Scene!

Darren Aronofsky's films -- Requiem for a Dream, Pi, The Fountain, The Wrestler -- have certainly not lacked strangeness or controversy, and it appears his next one, Black Swan, due in 2010, is no different. In a review of the screenplay, Carson Reeves at ScriptShadow reveals that the story includes a sex scene between the film's stars, Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis. And as you may know, Portman and Kunis are both female lady girl women persons!! Obviously, this automatically means the scene is hawt.

Reeves' script review has some significant spoilers, and not just the Internet crybaby "Oh no, you revealed a character's name!" kind, so proceed with caution over there. But the movie's premise is that Portman plays a sweet, innocent ballerina taking the lead in Swan Lake, and Kunis plays another ballerina who looks a lot like Portman but is much more reckless and "dark." How or why they end up in bed together, I won't say, and it's probably irrelevant compared to the more important issue, i.e., OMG PORTMAN KUNIS SEX!!!1! Reeves says it's "ecstasy-induced hungry aggressive angry sex"; whether he means "ecstasy" in the sense of being ecstatic or "Ecstasy" in the sense of the drug you take at raves, I don't know. I would guess the latter.

Mila Kunis Will Hunt Natalie Portman's 'Black Swan'

From wrasslers to ballerinas...

Last month, we learned that Natalie Portman was going to star in Darren Aronofsky's next film, Black Swan. The plot:a veteran ballerina competes against "a rival dancer, with the stakes and twists increasing as the dancers approach a big performance." Oh, and throw a little supernatural flavor for good measure. Well, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the rival will be played by Forgetting Sarah Marshall's Mila Kunis, and that bit of strangeness: this rival "might or might not be a figment of the dancer's imagination."

Frankly, this sound amazing, when one thinks of the range and success of Aronofsky's work -- math, drugs, strange time travel in space, wrestling... But I'm now torn on the casting -- mainly because of Kunis and Portman's vague resemblance to Summer Glau. Okay, so you need at least one big name to help fuel the film. But a ballerina film starring to dark-haired and petit actresses, and neither of them Glau? It seems like missing an opportunity to make use of her dancing talent.

Do you think Kunis and Portman will be able to pull off the foot-cramping world of ballerina-dom? Is Aronofsky making a mistake by not grabbing Glau? Sound off below!

SDCC: Interviews with Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Robert Rodriguez, Denzel Washington and More!

Our own Todd Gilchrist already gave you some deets on the Warner Bros. panel, where the studio showed off a whopping six upcoming films, including Sherlock Holmes, Jonah Hex, Nightmare on Elm Street, Where the Wild Things Are, The Box and The Book of Eli. Right before the panel, however, Cinematical squeezed itself into the TV press line in an attempt to snag the folks in and behind these movies so that we could ask them a question or two. Cinematical's Elisabeth Rappe joins our trusty Comic Con cameraman Chris Glenn as both attack the line with a vengeance.

After the jump:
-- Josh Brolin talks about a potential Jonah Hex sequel
-- Jackie Earle Haley talks about experiencing another Comic Con
-- Mila Kunis and Gary Oldman argue over their favorite super powers
-- Robert Rodriguez talks about all the different films he's working on
-- Denzel Washington laughs off any idea that he's got a little geek stuck inside him

Note: Cinematical shared the Brolin and Washington interviews with Frosty from Collider.

Exclusive: Images from Mike Judge's 'Extract'

Cinematical has just received these exclusive stills from Mike Judge's upcoming comedy Extract, starring Jason Bateman, Mila Kunis, Ben Affleck, Clifton Collins Jr., J.K. Simmons and Kristen Wiig. Similar to what Judge did with Office Space, Extract once again plops us right in the middle of the workplace; this time at an Extract plant where its owner, Joel (Bateman), is trying to balance a whole bunch of personal and professional problems, including an unfaithful wife (Wiig) and strange employees. I love Judge's random sense of humor, the first trailer for the film was pretty hilarious and it's nice to see the writer-director back on the big screen making us laugh with a studio counterpart who's willing to promote the heck out of his new flick.

Those of you heading out to Comic Con next week can get a more advanced look at some of the film at the official Extract panel on Saturday at 1:30pm in Hall H, with Mike Judge, Jason Bateman, Mila Kunis (mmmm, Mila ...) and Kristen Wiig all in attendance. The rest of you will have to wait until the film hits theaters on September 4.

Trailer Premiere: Mike Judge's 'Extract'!

Filed under: Comedy », Fandom », Movie Marketing », Trailers and Clips »

Cinematical is absolutely, positively pumped up to be bringing you the debut teaser trailer for Mike Judge's Extract, starring Jason Bateman, Mila Kunis, Ben Affleck, Kristen Wiig and J.K. Simmons. I'm a huge Judge fan; been following the dude since way back during his Beavis and Butthead days, and haven't really disliked anything he's put out. Folks have told me that Extract finds the writer-director returning to his Office Space-ish humor, and this teaser definitely shows some signs of that -- from the workplace mishaps to our hero's random romantic woes, classic Judge hilarity is watermarked all over this sucker.

Extract follows the personal and professional problems endured by the owner (Bateman) of a flower-extract plant, including a wife who won't sleep with him, a new hottie temp and ... Ben Affleck as a major stoner? Believe it. I think it's safe to say Judd Apatow's Funny People now has some serious competition when it comes to funniest film of the summer because this little sucker just shot up to numero uno on my anticipation list. What about you? Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think. Extract hits theaters on September 4.

Max Payne: Unrated Director's Cut DVD Hits Shelves January 20th

Filed under: Action », Thrillers », New Releases », Noir », Mystery & Suspense », New on DVD », 20th Century Fox », Home Entertainment », Games and Game Movies »

Max Payne came and went without making much of an impact on the box office or public consciousness -- I think I saw more commercials for the original game than I saw for its big screen adaptation. Game movies don't inspire much enthusiasm or excitement anymore, and no wonder, as not one has broke out of the lackluster mold. Ten minutes or so into Max Payne, and you'll think "This would be so much more fun to play than watch" just as you probably did with Tomb Raider, Hitman, Doom, etc. At least Max Payne is more visually arresting than most attempts -- the mixture of Balrogs and Sin City almost make you forgive the dreary plot. Almost. (For a more in depth review, you can read Eric Snider's take.)

Max Payne hits DVD shelves this Tuesday in three different versions: Single-Disc, Special Edition, and Blu-Ray.
All three versions are in widescreen( 2.35:1 aspect ratio) and boast the theatrical and unrated cuts, as well as an audio commentary with John Moore, production designer Daniel Dorrance and visual effects supervisor Everett Burrell. Only the Special Edition and Blu-Ray have digital copies and additional bonus features: an animated graphic novel called Michelle Payne, and a behind-the-scenes featurette Picture. (Weirdly, Picture is divided into parts -- and you only get Part 2 if you buy Blu Ray.)

So, what about that unrated cut? If you were hoping that it fix the uneven story or lack of violence, you will be sorely disappointed. The unrated cut is only three minutes longer, and I can't say I noticed that it added any extra carnage beyond a few four letter bombs.
