Jennifer Hudson Joins 'Sex and the City: The Movie'!

Seeing as our resident Sex and the City expert (ahem, Monika) is off covering the Toronto International Film Festival, it's now my job to bring you the news that Oscar-winner (and former American Idol contestant) Jennifer Hudson has signed on to co-star in Sex and the City: The Movie. Can I get a "Hell Yeah!" on that one? According to Variety, Hudson will take on the role of Carrie Bradshaw's (Sarah Jessica Parker) assistant. And, to add to that, TV Squad managed to get hold of some spoilers, one of which describes Hudson's role as a "fashionable and sharp African-American woman in her early 20s, who moved from St. Louis to NYC in order to find love. The movie will also feature her ex-boyfriend Will." TV Squad also mentions that Hudson's name in the film will be Louise.

The film will pick up four years after the final episode on HBO, and once again revolve around the sexy lives of Carrie (Parker), Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon). Chris Noth will reprise his role as Mr. Big, while Mario Cantone will also be back as Anthony Marantino. One of the things I'm most interested in is how well this film does in theaters -- considering it's based on a cable TV series. I imagine the fanbase has grown larger over the years due to DVDs and syndication plays, but I bet a lot of folks will be watching Sex and the City: The Movie to see whether a move from pay cable to movie theater was a smart choice, or one that should have been reserved for an HBO two-hour special. How well do you think the movie will do?

Mr. Big Returns for 'Sex and the City' Movie

Mr. Big. Some love him, some don't. Me, I've been all over the map with him. When I first saw Sex and the City, someone had given me their videotapes of the second season, and I thought they were the first. I kept wondering who that dark-haired guy with the big ego was, and wondered why Sarah Jessica Parker's Carrie Bradshaw was so into him. Then I saw them all from the beginning and it made sense -- much more so than Miranda's Steve ever did. (Don't even get me started on that!) When the series ended, Carrie was finally back with Big, who finally made himself truly available -- so much so, that we actually found out that his name is John.

With a feature currently in the works, they just had to include Chris Noth. Luckily, he's in; he's signed on; it's official, so says Variety. I don't think they could've pulled off the sequel without him. To have Big out of the picture would go against all that was set up in the series finale, and to have him be out of town or something would've just been dumb. We've been following the project around for awhile, all the way back to its Mario Cantone rumor stages, and we've got almost nothing to share on the plot. Since Cantone says he's got a good amount of screen time, I'm betting on a Big wedding -- it makes the most sense. If Big really did finally commit, why else would Anthony be needed much in the film if Carrie wasn't finally tying the not? Because Samantha is? Doubtful. What do you think the whole shebang will be about?
