Someone's Actually Remaking 'My Tutor'
Filed under: Comedy », Remakes and Sequels »
Yes, really. The 1983 sex comedy that a whole generation of guys have "seen" more than a dozen times is getting a remake treatment from filmmaker Mark Altman. To those who don't remember the flick -- and those who only watched certain parts -- My Tutor is about ... hell, it's all right there in the title: A high-school kid has a fling with his sexy tutor. Surely this concept warrants a second film. The original flick starred Matt Lattanzi, Kevin McCarthy, Crispin Glover and the adorable Caren Kaye as My Tutor. (Well, not mine, unfortunately, but you get the point.) Variety says casting has not begun on the new version, which will begin shooting in October. This remake will mark the first production from Atlman's Maltman Entertainment -- although horror fans will remember the guy from movies like House of the Dead, All Souls Day, and Room 6.
And if this project marks the beginning of a new trend -- the 1980s sex comedy remake -- then here are a few obvious suggestions: Private School, Private Lessons, Private Resort, Hardbodies (1 & 2), Spring Break, Fraternity Vacation, Losin' It, My Chauffeur, Joysticks, Zapped!, Class, Hot Dog: The Movie, Hamburger: The Motion Picture, Loose Screws, Screwballs, and The Joy of Sex. Get back to me once those remakes are in production; I've got about two dozen more.

(Skimpy week!)Recent Theatricals
The Libertine (WeinsteinCo) -- Johnny Depp apparently does very naughty things in this period piece I've not yet seen and therefore cannot logically comment upon. (director commentary, featurette, 10 deleted scenes)
Marilyn Hotchkiss' Ballroom Dancing and Charm School (Sony) -- Someone told me it's a sequel to Tron. I think they were kidding. (filmmaker commentary, original short film)
The Matador (WeinsteinCo) -- Pierce Brosnan is drop-dead freakin' hilarious in this movie. I know, I was surprised too. (two commentaries, featurette, 11 deleted scenes, radio interview)
Stoned (Universal) -- The allegedly, maybe, somewhat potentially fact-based story of the young Rolling Stones -- or at least the guy who quit the band and drowned at 27. (no extras)
Catalog Picks
My Chauffeur & My Tutor (Brentwood) -- Nothing says "sex comedy" like the possessive "My." How did nobody think to make My Hooker? (no extras)
(Happy 4th!)
New On DVD - The Producers, The Ringer, When A Stranger Calls

• Doogal - A saccharine, cheap-looking CGI import from Britain about a lazy, cowardly, sugar-addicted pooch (with a mullet cut) who must find a way to save the world from an icy death is not the follow-up to Hoodwinked that Disney escapees Bob and Harvey Weinstein hoped for...or we asked for. At least they've got the swell Over The Hedge in theaters this week. Formerly titled The Magic Roundabout and re-dubbed (Doogal, that is. Not Over The Hedge.)
• Duma - With most arthouse films rated "R", it is always a pleasure when one comes along that culture mavens can take their kids to, and The Black Stallion director Carroll Ballard's latest nature trek -- a visually lovely adventure -- certainly does fit that bill. It is about a 12-year-old South African boy (Alexander Michaletos) who must return his pet cheetah to the wild, encountering and overcoming a number of obstacles along the way, the biggest one being our initial reluctance to accept its premise.
