The Best Films of SXSW

Filed under: SXSW », Festival Reports »

It was tough work, but we did it: we managed to drag ourselves to over 50 films, sit in the velvet-draped seats of roughly six different darkened theaters, and absorb all that celluloid. Thereafter, we discussed what we watched, ranked, sorted, argued, re-ranked, and discussed some more. Finally, we were able to come up with this list of the 10 best films from SXSW 2008. If you weren't able to come to SXSW this year, it's ok. We've got the lowdown for you. Here we go...

Film #10

Natural Causes is a modern romantic comedy. While not perfect, it is composed of so many identifiably true moments that you'll fall in love with the movie ... The performances by Jerzy Gwiazdowski and Leah Goldstein help seal the deal. It wasn't until after the movie that I learned they're a real-life couple, which surprised me because most real-life couples have little chemistry on screen. Yet they convinced me they were, at various stages, a flirting couple getting to know one another, a comfortable pair of lovers playing video games naked, and a bickering twosome.

SXSW Review: Natural Causes

I'm not a fan of modern romantic comedies that are filled with contrivances and frustratingly stupid "obstacles" intended to keep the couple apart until the final close-up. Likewise, it's hard to think of a romantic drama in which we see the relationship run its course in a way that approaches reality. My resistance is based in part on my life experience; perhaps if I met the love of my life at first glance in high school or was currently involved in a long-term relationship finally crumbling in bitterness and recrimination, I'd feel differently. As it is, I tend to avoid relationship movies because they ring so false and hollow to me.

In contrast, Natural Causes, while not perfect, is composed of so many identifiably true moments that I fell in love with the movie.

David (Jerzy Gwiazdowski) is initially attracted to Shaina (Shonda Leigh Robbins), while his friend flirts with her roommate Cara (Leah Goldstein). David and Shaina end up together that night in her bedroom. Fade to black; the next time we see David, he's riding an elevator with Cara, who is no longer rooming with Shaina. Cara and David begin talking, which progresses to flirting, which progresses to spending the night together.

SXSW Watch: 'The Marconi Bros.' and 'Natural Causes' Trailers

Filed under: SXSW », Fandom », DIY/Filmmaking », Movie Marketing », Trailers and Clips »

Our SXSW team here at Cinematical just coughed up our first preliminary screening schedule for the festival, assigning reviews and whatnot to all those who are attending. I'll be there in Austin, as will be Scott, Jette, Snider and Peter. We'll be covering as much as we possibly can in the short time we're there, so no worries. Continuing along with our pre-festival coverage, two more trailers for two more SXSW films have arrived online. First up (and the trailer you can watch above) is The Marconi Brothers, which stars Dan Fogler and Brendan Sexton III. Here's the short synopsis: "Anthony and Carmine Marconi have been dutifully serving out life sentences in the family carpet business. Their opportunity to escape occurs when they meet the undisputed king of the Long Island wedding video business." The thing looks pretty damn funny, and since everyone involved has a New York accent, this film passes as authentic in my book. (Note: Scott and I fought over this particular review. He won.) For more on all things SXSW, head to their official website.

Check out the trailer for another SXSW flick, Natural Causes, after the jump ...
