New Goodies from 'Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer'
Filed under: Action », Comedy », Horror »
I caught the very entertaining Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer as part of the Slamdance 2008 line-up -- and I knew I had another indie horror flick on my hands that was worth hyping. (Review here.) Bolstered by a canny script and some strong work from actors Trevor Matthews and Robert Englund, JB:MS is a colorfully scrappy little monster movie with a very sly tongue-in-cheek attitude, and I'm certain it's a movie that the horror geeks will embrace once Anchor Bay unleashes it later this year. And those horror geeks have been pretty patient, so here are a few new goodies.Under the jump you'll find a brand-new Jack Brooks poster (which is slightly different from the one Bloody-Dee is sharing right here), but there's also a newly-redesigned website for the monster maniacs to click around in. The movie will open in its native land (somewhere called "Canada"?) throughout July, but fest-freaks can meet Jack Brooks when he plays at Montreal's Fantasia Film Festival on July 5. As far as U.S. distribution goes, that's up to the merchants of mayhem over at Anchor Bay.
Fan Rant: When the HELL Can I See 'Rogue' Already?
Filed under: Horror », Fandom », The Weinstein Co. », Fan Rant »
Man oh man do I love a good Killer Croc flick. Problem is ... there's maybe one true "classic" of the sub-genre (that'd be Lewis Teague's and John Sayles' Alligator, of course), and the rest of 'em are pretty much floating crap. Over the past year or so we've seen a bit of a resurgence in the category: Lake Placid 2 is mindless stupidity; Stewart Raffill's Croc is slightly better than that; that Primeval one is a passable enough time-waster; and the indie Aussie import Black Water is actually quite good, although more of a slow-burn nature thriller than a chomp-'em-up horror flick -- but what of Rogue?Yes, Rogue. Ring any bells? Sophomore effort from Wolf Creek director Greg Mclean, Rogue looks to be a standard enough Killer Croc flick that stars Michael Vartan, Radha Mitchell and Sam Worthington. The fact that the flick has been sitting on a shelf over at Weinstein Co. for over a year might seem like a red flag, but that's why the world needs horror geeks like me: So I can tell you that early reaction to the flick has been surprisingly positive! The flick came out in Australia last November, and while it didn't do a whole lot of business, I've been hearing rumblings from my horror colleagues that the movie's quite good!
First Look at the New 'Prom Night' Poster
Filed under: Horror », Sony », Remakes and Sequels »
A lot of the old-school slasher fans recall Paul Lynch's Prom Night with some degree of fondness. Not because it's a great horror film necessarily (it ain't), but because it A) offers yet another early (screamy) performance from Jamie Lee Curtis, B) features a non-comedic performance by Leslie Nielsen (which are always fun), and C) has just enough creeps, chills and gore to keep the freaks happy. But really; Prom Night isn't any sort of classic. But the title? Now, that's a good title. It'll strike a chord in the memory banks of most movie fans, plus even if you've never even heard of the 1980 slasher flick, "Prom Night" is a good title ... especially if you're pushing a PG-13 remake and you're hoping to get the teens interested. But yeah, Sony's backing the remake, which is directed by television veteran Nelson McCormick and written by J.S. Cardone, who recently gave us The Covenant and The Forsaken. Eesh.
Scheduled for release on April 11, the new Prom Night stars youthful females like Jessica Stroup (Hills Have Eyes 2) and Brittany Snow (The Pacifier), as well as good ol' Johnathon Schaech (Hush). Plus it looks like Jessalyn Gilsig is on board, and I've had a crush on her since her Boston Public days. Sigh. Anyway, Shock Til You Drop has an exclusive peek at the remake's brand-new one-sheet, so feel free to check that out right here.
And then feel free to stop back and leave a comment about how EVERY horror movie of the past three decades is being remade these days and boy are you sick of it. (Fuel to the fire: The Prom Night director's next gig? A remake of The Stepfather.)
Hang Around with the New 'Hostel: Part II' Poster

It's been at least 72 hours since we've shared a fresh piece of Hostel: Part 2 news, so let's remedy that right now by pointing you towards another brand-new poster for the flick. I believe this one is poster number seven. It's a picture of a girl hanging upside down with her pony tail swinging and a drop of sweat hanging from her nose. It's precisely the sort of subtle-yet-strangely disturbing promotional material that Lionsgate's been putting out for a few months now. I guess we'll be getting a new poster every two weeks until the flick's June 8 release date.I know what you're thinking: "What's this? Scott seems oddly grumpy while discussing Hostel this time around! I thought he loved this stuff!" Well, I do. But the movie was supposed to hit theaters in January, which means the six-month delay does nothing but give us dead air. And this dead air is often filled with stuff like ... new posters of sweaty girls and pony tails. Still, the marketing campaign is a pretty slick one if you're asking me. I think I've just had enough with the appetizers and I'm now hungry for the meal already. (Plus I'm curious to see how the sequel pulls off the "gender switch" that seems to be the central plot divergence.) The June 8 release date puts Eli Roth's hostile horror sequel up against the kid-friendly Surf's Up and the inevitable smash that is Ocean's 13.
