Ivan Reitman Talks 'Old School Dos' with Completed Script in Bag

Yes, we're back again with what's becoming a monthly Old School 2 (or Old School Dos) update. Last time we checked in with the highly-anticipated sequel, Will Ferrell was on the fence about whether or not he would return. In some interviews, he was optimistic and wanted to read the script, while at the same time (during other interviews) he denied any and all involvement in the pic. Since the entire film hinges upon Vince Vaughn, Will Ferrell and Luke Wilson participating, writer-director Todd Phillips (and co-writer Scot Armstrong) would have to turn in one helluva script in order to get those three back onboard. Could it be done? Would it be done.

Speaking with Rotten Tomatoes, producer Ivan Reitman felt that script may have just arrived in his lap. He says, "I have in my briefcase a new draft of the screenplay, I got last night. I haven't read it yet. I'm going to read it on the plane. So yeah, we very much want to do it. We hope we can corral the entire cast because it was written by the same writers, will be directed by Todd Phillips as before." Since he uses the words "new draft," I'm thinking Phillips and Armstrong might be having a hard time producing a quality sequel; one that would immediately attract the attention of those very expensive actors. Another potential reason why the sequel is taking so long to come together might be the fact that Phillips' last film, School for Scoundrels, bombed at the box office. If Dreamworks is going to open their deep wallets for Vaughn, Ferrell and Wilson, I imagine they want to make real sure their director is going to produce a quality flick. Then again, the first film wasn't all that special (that's right, I said it!), so who knows ...

Ferrell Shoots Down Old School Sequel?

I'm sorry, but I just don't get Hollywood actors. And something tells me I'll never get them. Though the script is apparently still being written, Will Ferrell recently said that he was anxiously awaiting a draft of Old School Dos (the sequel to 2003's Old School) to land in his hands. We assumed that Ferrell (along with Luke Wilson and Vince Vaughn) would most likely be reprising their roles because, well, what good would a sequel be without them ... unless it was going straight to DVD. And there's no way in hell Todd Phillips would direct a straight-to-DVD comedy. Sure, his career has gone to sh*t, but his ego is wayyy too big for him to be traveling that route just yet.

Which brings us to another recent Will Ferrell interview in which, once again, Old School Dos was brought up. This time, after he talks about how he turned down a staggering $29 million to star in a sequel to Elf, the dude is asked about his involvement in an Old School sequel. Says Ferrell, "Oh, I wouldn't do another Old School. They put these rumours out there, these studio people, but I would never be behind that one." Really? Seriously? Because you once said ... eh, forget it. I don't get these people. Never will. Mr. Phillips, if you're reading, it might be time to just let this one go.

More on Old School 2

Perhaps I'm very much in the minority here, but I wasn't crazy about Old School. Apart from a few scenes, the film just didn't do it for me. Needless to say, director Todd Phillips feels there's definitely enough funny to warrant a sequel and up until this point, all we knew was that a script was being written.

However, according to Skewed and Reviewed, they recently sat down with Phillips and managed to grab a little more info on the upcoming sequel. Apparently, the title will be Old School Dos and, while Luke Wilson, Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn are currently not signed on to reprise their roles, the script will focus more on Ferrell's "Frank the Tank" character and, especially, why his wife is so concerned with her husband's alter ego. Though all three actors are due for a significant pay raise, I can't imagine they will pass up the chance to return for another go-round. Should the film actually happen, this will mark Phillips' first attempt to create a sequel from the assortment of iffy comedies he's given us over the past six years.
