Indie Roundup: 'Get Low' Gets Bought, Chilean 'Beer'
Filed under: Drama », Foreign Language », Independent », Box Office », Cinematical Indie »

Indie Roundup invites you to relive the last seven days and look forward to the near future in the ever-diverse indie film world.
Deals. A big buzz title at Toronto was the most notable deal of the week. Aaron Schneider's Get Low, starring Bill Murray, Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek, and Lucas Black, sold to Sony Pictures Classics for distribution in North America, according to our friends at indieWIRE. Scott Weinberg called it "an excellent little dramatic piece that's awash in humanity, warmth, insight, and wit." Details on several other deals that were made, all related to the Toronto fest, can be found at indieWIRE.
Online / On-Demand Viewing. Even less-publicized fest films are getting out into circulation. Hailing from Chile, Scrambled Beer (Malta Con Huevo) premiered at SXSW in 2008, and is now available for free streaming exclusively at Babelgum. It's described as "a delirious black comedy and bizarre story about two friends named Vladimir and George who move in together and begin to see reality differently. Vladimir lives a supernatural tale of time travel, while Jorge grows obsessed and embarks on a twisted adventure." In other words, possibly the perfect movie for the beginning of fall.
Fests. My favorite festival ever, Fantastic Fest, starts tomorrow night. Unfortunately, I'll only be able to pop in over the weekend to savor a small taste of the cinematic banquet that will be served over the next seven days. Look for much more coverage right here at Cinematical.

Can you guess which sought-after, Oscar-nominated actress is enjoying some time with fans on the red carpet above? [Photo via Getty Images]
I'd just like to point out that all our writers currently attending the Toronto International Film Festival have been working their asses off to bring you the best reviews, interviews and scene coverage found online. Speaking to James Rocchi before via IM, I thanked him for taking a Paris Hilton bullet for the team and asked if he needed us to inject anymore Red Bull straight into his veins. For those who've never attended or worked a major film fest before, let me just tell you that it is non stop all day, all night ... and you will return home with a nasty, week-long illness. These kids do it because they love it, and they love you for reading them. So thanks team -- keep up the good work!
We're back on the red carpet today with a bunch of tasty images from several different premieres, including The Brothers Bloom, The Duchess, Paris, Not France, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist and more. Check out the gallery below for some fantastic images from this year's Toronto bash (more hi-res images here), and make sure to keep it tuned in right here all week as we still have a long way to go. For a comprehensive list of all our Toronto coverage so far, head on over to our official fest Hub, or check out some sweet daily recaps over on Moviefone.
Could Paris Hilton Doc Become Hottest Ticket in Toronto?

Oh yes, you heard that right -- and I almost slapped myself when, during a Toronto Fest meeting earlier today, I unfortunately had to inform our team that coverage of Paris, Not France was a top priority. Congrats Ms. Hilton, you've successfully found a way to turn all the attention toward your documentary by making it look like you want nothing to do with it. Of course, that's not the case at all -- heck, it's not like the chick ever pulled something like this before (cough ... sex tape ... cough). But let's back up for a minute ...
... there's a Paris Hilton documentary playing Toronto? Yup, it's called Paris, Not France, and it marks the first feature for music video and commercial director Adria Petty (daughter of Tom). What's it about? Apparently, the flick follows Paris around for a year and provides us with one of those intimate looks into the life of blah blah .... and then she says "That's hot" about a gazillion times ... the end. So why is everyone talking about it?
Well, because Paris (and her "people") somehow managed to get the festival to pull all but one screening of the doc for reasons they're not willing to disclose at this time. So what's up? Is Paris really that upset with the way she's portrayed in the film that she doesn't want it shown? Or, is this whole "pull the screenings, threaten lawsuits" thing just a ploy to get people (like us) talking and wanting and needing? I'd say it's certainly suspicious, especially since we're talking Paris Hilton here, who, whether you like it or not, is pretty smart when it comes to marketing herself as a larger-than-life personality.
What do you think? And does all this hoopla make you want to see the film even more?

Move Over Capote -- The Battle of Wine Pics is Set to Begin
Filed under: Comedy », Drama », Deals », DIY/Filmmaking », Newsstand »
While it might not be the most interesting of topics to some, two new films on the same subject are gearing up to battle it out Capote style for a chance to be the first in theaters. In one corner we have Intellectual Properties Worldwide and Zen Haze Prods. who have just tapped Randall Miller to direct Bottle Shock, based off Ross Schwartz's screenplay. Pic will focus on the 1976 Paris Tastings where California wines seemingly came out of nowhere to beat the French. No, we won't get an actual battle with thousands of troops running towards each other, bottles of red and white in hand. Instead, there's a good chance of seeing a crop full of snobbish snots, their noses stuck deep inside each glass, with lots of twirling and note taking. Killer! Casting will begin early next year with an eye to shoot over the summer.
In the other corner we have a little privately financed indie based off George M. Tabor's Judgement of Paris. Robert Mark Kamen has been hired to adapt, with Clark Peterson (Monster) and Elizabeth Fowler set to produce. And yes, this project also focuses on the 1976 Paris Tastings -- apparently, a critical event in the history of California wine. No word on how far along Judgement is, though there's a chance they'll both be filming at the same time. Having learned everything I know about wine from the film Sideways (yes, I'm that guy), all I want to know is whether or not Paul Giamatti will play a part. God, I loved him and his little Pinot Noir fetish in that film. "I am NOT drinking any f**king Merlot!" Classic stuff.
Woody was Just Kidding About That Whole Paris Thing
Filed under: Drama », Fandom », Newsstand »
Oops. Michelle Williams? David
Krumholtz? Cancel those
Paris plane
tickets, and never mind about that job. Look at this way -- now, instead of counting your money and adding
"Starred in a Woody Allen movie" to your list of
accomplishments, you can go look for work! Ah, the struggles of life in Hollywood. It turns out, you see, that Allen's
mysterious (the people at Variety are hilariously pleased with themselves for uncovering the fact that it was
going to be about "Americans in Gaul." Gee, ya think?) Paris project isn't actually, um, happening any more.
According to elusive insiders, the budget was getting out of control, so Woody just punted and ran back to London, his
new favorite city in all the world. Now, instead of filming in Paris, Allen is going to shoot a third film in London (Match Point was filmed there, as was the upcoming Scoop) before heading off to Spain next year, where he has already agreed to mount a production. (He's 71, by the way. How is he more active than I am?)
