Watch This: Karl Pilkington Reviews 'The Invention of Lying'
Filed under: Comedy », New Releases », Fandom », Movie Marketing », Trailers and Clips »

Well, he may have a head like a "f***ing orange" but Karl Pilkington has managed to go from being an unknown radio producer for UK comedian Ricky Gervais to standing in as his comic foil to becoming a best-selling author. And now he's getting into the movie review business. Well, not really, but the lovable weirdo did review Gervais' latest comedy, The Invention of Lying, with Gervais in attendance (which would probably be the stuff of nightmares for most film critics).
So what did Pilkington think of the movie? Well, if you're familiar with his work, then you know that you don't exactly get a straight answer -- but at least on the upside, he did say that the movie ended before he got too bored. Gervais' latest film centers on an alternate world where his character is the first person to invent the art of deception and quickly begins to use his newfound skill to woo a woman and earn fame and riches.
Now, obviously, if you're looking for a real review you aren't going to count on a man famous for saying "I could eat a knob at night" on-air, and a quick look around at some of your more 'legit' film critics has the comedy receiving mixed reviews. Luckily, though, the general consensus is that audiences will be treated to a smart if slightly uneven comedy, but just like Gervais' last film outing, manages to win you over in the end (and even Pilkington thought it was better than King Ralph, so that has got to count for something).
The Invention of Lying opens on October 2nd, 2009.

SDCC: The Podcast Wrapup

Comic-Con 2009 has come to a close, and we've already begun the countdown to next year. But what were some of the highlights and lowlights? Cinematical sent three writers to cover the Con this year, Elisabeth Rappe, Todd GIlchrist, and myself, and we all three had very different experiences: Todd was locked in Hall H for most of the show watching the giant panel presentations, Elisabeth spent time moving from the floor to the press area to smaller panels, and I was upstairs covering video press lines and interviews, so we all saw a very different slice of the Con.
Listen to the podcast embedded below to hear what we thought of the Con, what our favorite moments were, and what kind of swag we went home with. It's probably a very different experience than that of a regular fan attendee, and we're very envious of the people who were able to attend for fun and not work. But enough of my yakkin'. Give a listen and chime in with your own Comic-Con thoughts below.

The Cinematical Roundtable, with Guest Brian Orndorf
Filed under: Action », Animation », Comedy », Horror », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Thrillers », Mystery & Suspense », Lionsgate Films », 20th Century Fox », Dreamworks »

Damned if you have a mic, damned if you don't... Coming to you loudly (at least in my case) is the latest episode of The Cinematical Roundtable, and this time, we don't even dare leave the lobby before offering up our thoughts on the rock-'em-sock-'em likes of 12 Rounds, in addition to the week's other wide releases, The Haunting in Connecticut and Monsters vs. Aliens.
Rounding out the proverbial 'we' this week is Brian Orndorf, he of multiple outlets, not the least of which are eFilmCritic and DVD Talk. Also, my good friend Tyler serves as a last-minute substitute for a colleague fallen ill (that, or he just really didn't want to sit through a John Cena flick). He knows his stuff, which I can't say for all in our field, and he happened to be co-anchor of our college movie talk show, "Matinee Idle," which was pretty much a podcast before podcasts were podcasts.
So... yeah. He's good people. Enjoy!

Cinematical Rocks the /Filmcast

Last Monday, yours truly was invited to help a friend of a friend out by offering to review Frost/Nixon on their podcast. As it turns out, it was the /Filmcast we were talking about, and it happened to be the same night that head honcho here Erik Davis was due to join in. Small world, eh?So we tag-teamed our film chatter with the cool guys over at /Film -- David Chen, Adam Quigley, and Devindra Hardawar, to be specific -- and you can listen to that episode right about here. When Erik isn't twirling his hair around his finger and gushing about MTV's episodes of True Life, he and the gang manage to get around to discussing all the latest film news from Terminator: Salvation to the potential Suck Rogers with Frank Miller at the wheel.
I also took part in the /Film After Dark podcast and a recent year-end horror wrap-up extravaganza with just about everyone over at Bloody Disgusting, so with any luck and nearly no shame, we hope to share those as well. For those of you wishing to listen to David, Devindra and Adam record their next /Filmcast live, they'll be looking back on 2008 in film this coming Monday at 9 PM EST/6 PM PST.

ITunes and 20th Century Fox have also paired up to bring ten Set to Screen with Baz Luhurman podcasts, which document all aspects of the upcoming film. This actually debuted yesterday, but because I couldn't access the podcast, there wasn't any way to properly write about it. If you're as technologically ill-equipped as I, the podcasts have been put up on MovieWeb. There are two up now, and both are worth watching for the gorgeous scenery (no, I'm not talking about Jackman) and the glimpses of the film. The one on still photography is especially stunning -- pure art!
