The Cinematical Roundtable, with Guest Brian Orndorf

Filed under: Action », Animation », Comedy », Horror », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Thrillers », Mystery & Suspense », Lionsgate Films », 20th Century Fox », Dreamworks »

Damned if you have a mic, damned if you don't... Coming to you loudly (at least in my case) is the latest episode of The Cinematical Roundtable, and this time, we don't even dare leave the lobby before offering up our thoughts on the rock-'em-sock-'em likes of 12 Rounds, in addition to the week's other wide releases, The Haunting in Connecticut and Monsters vs. Aliens.

Rounding out the proverbial 'we' this week is Brian Orndorf, he of multiple outlets, not the least of which are eFilmCritic and DVD Talk. Also, my good friend Tyler serves as a last-minute substitute for a colleague fallen ill (that, or he just really didn't want to sit through a John Cena flick). He knows his stuff, which I can't say for all in our field, and he happened to be co-anchor of our college movie talk show, "Matinee Idle," which was pretty much a podcast before podcasts were podcasts.

So... yeah. He's good people. Enjoy!

The Cinematical Roundtable: Live from SXSW with Drew McWeeny and Scott Weinberg

Filed under: Action », Comedy », Drama », Horror », Thrillers », SXSW », Mystery & Suspense », Lionsgate Films », Universal », Warner Brothers », Festival Reports », Podcasts », War »

Welcome to the inaugural broadcast of The Cinematical Roundtable, our latest podcast here at the site, where we'll speak with writers and readers alike about the latest in film offerings. Our first episode has Drew McWeeny of Hitfix fame and our own Scott Weinberg joining you and I on the road as we discuss March's The Haunting in Connecticut, April's Observe and Report, May's Drag Me to Hell, and June's The Hurt Locker following their respective SXSW premieres in Austin, Texas.

Please pardon our dust as we get this puppy off the ground, please brace yourself for some mild profanity, and please tell your friends. Especially that one cute redhead. She's not seeing anyone, right?

Cinematical Rocks the /Filmcast

Filed under: Action », Comedy », Drama », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Thrillers », Awards », Universal », Warner Brothers », RumorMonger », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels », Oscar Watch »

Last Monday, yours truly was invited to help a friend of a friend out by offering to review Frost/Nixon on their podcast. As it turns out, it was the /Filmcast we were talking about, and it happened to be the same night that head honcho here Erik Davis was due to join in. Small world, eh?

So we tag-teamed our film chatter with the cool guys over at /Film -- David Chen, Adam Quigley, and Devindra Hardawar, to be specific -- and you can listen to that episode right about here. When Erik isn't twirling his hair around his finger and gushing about MTV's episodes of True Life, he and the gang manage to get around to discussing all the latest film news from Terminator: Salvation to the potential Suck Rogers with Frank Miller at the wheel.

I also took part in the /Film After Dark podcast and a recent year-end horror wrap-up extravaganza with just about everyone over at Bloody Disgusting, so with any luck and nearly no shame, we hope to share those as well. For those of you wishing to listen to David, Devindra and Adam record their next /Filmcast live, they'll be looking back on 2008 in film this coming Monday at 9 PM EST/6 PM PST.

New Set Photos From 'Australia' -- and Podcasts!

Filed under: Drama », Romance », 20th Century Fox », Newsstand », Movie Marketing », Images », War », Nicole Kidman », Trailers and Clips »

You know, I am pretty happy to be me. But every once and awhile, I see something like this, and I am possessed with fury that I wasn't born Nicole Kidman -- or at least an Australian actress who could have stolen the part from her. Damn. That photo is just all kinds of sexy. And there's more gorgeous stills from Australia over on IESB.net as well as a few over on the film's official site.

ITunes and 20th Century Fox have also paired up to bring ten Set to Screen with Baz Luhurman podcasts, which document all aspects of the upcoming film. This actually debuted yesterday, but because I couldn't access the podcast, there wasn't any way to properly write about it. If you're as technologically ill-equipped as I, the podcasts have been put up on MovieWeb. There are two up now, and both are worth watching for the gorgeous scenery (no, I'm not talking about Jackman) and the glimpses of the film. The one on still photography is especially stunning -- pure art!

Pacino: "I'm Trying to be Funny, and I'm not Funny"

In an effort to promote his new production of Oscar Wilde's Salome which runs in LA through May 14, Al Pacino created a podcast, located on the show's webpage. Though in theory there will be several episodes, there's currently only one (and it went up almost three weeks ago) -- but since the site offers the option of subscribing to the podcast's feed, it seems reasonable to hope there will be more.

In the current episodes, Pacino introduces the play, wears Crocs, explains his reasons for staging the show as a reading rather than a full production (I'm not sure I buy it, but he claims that period costumes would distance the audiences from the story -- call me crazy, but can't you just stage it in modern dress? It strikes me that seeing people walking around with scripts would be at least as distracting as period clothing.), and discusses whether Salome is going to get naked (they're working on it). It also includes footage of readings, so you can get an idea of what the production looks like. If you're not in LA, never fear -- there's always the movie, which is expected to hit festivals later this year.
