Exclusive: Danny Boyle Updates 'Trainspotting' Sequel
Filed under: Comedy », Drama », Fandom », Newsstand », Remakes and Sequels »
Earlier this month, Cinematical managed to chat up director Danny Boyle, whose film Slumdog Millionaire (one of my favorites of the year, actually) hits select theaters tomorrow. We'll post our full interview a bit later on, but we couldn't wait to share a bit more Trainspotting news with you. As you may or may not already know, Boyle is keen on making a Trainspotting sequel (based on that book's follow-up, Porno). However, because the film would have to take place roughly ten years after the events of the original, Boyle has insisted that he'd like to wait awhile to let the actors age. But here's been the big question: While Boyle is down, would his original cast be back? Here's what Boyle had to say when I asked him just that: "Actually, I've got a bit of news on that one. We've had this plan for awhile now to make a film that's generational; how they would be guys now who were clearly and visibly middle aged. Well, what's just happened in Britain is that they're preparing to release a new DVD of [Trainspotting], and they've done a series of interviews for the special features on the DVD ... and good news is all the actors have come back to participate in these interviews. So I think that's a sign that if we do get them looking right, they'll be prepared to do it -- that they're getting to a point where they're thinking, 'Yeah, that could be interesting.' Because everyone will have to be in the right frame of mind in order to do it; they need to age a bit still. I want them to feel different ... and older."
Boyle later told me that he does hope to eventually make the sequel one day. That, coupled with the news that the original cast have reunited for a new Trainspotting DVD, means another flick is most certainly in the cards.
A Flick You Missed: The Amateurs
Filed under: Comedy », Home Entertainment »
I just now came up with a new Cinematical column: A Flick You Missed. Catchy title, eh? This is where the Cinematical writers will offer up a mini-mini-review (more of a reminder) on a flick that nobody really saw ... but we really liked. The flick that inspired such a simplistic idea? Mike Traeger's The Amateurs (aka The Moguls), which played at a whole bunch of film festivals before landing a (very) limited release late last year. The DVD was released last month by First Look Pictures -- and I liked this goofy little farce a whole damn lot.Big fan of ensemble comedies are you? Then I'll just toss the cast list out there before offering a brief synopsis and a few random opinions. Ready? (Deep breath) Jeff Bridges, Joe Pantoliano, William Fichtner, Ted Danson, Patrick Fugit, Tim Blake Nelson, Isaiah Washington, Steven Weber, John Hawkes, Brad Henke, Elden Henson, Brad Garrett, Mike Binder. All funny guys -- and every single one of 'em delivers a chuckle or two. Oh, and the women! Lauren Graham, Glenne Headly, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Valerie Perrine, Judy Greer, Eileen Brennan. That's a lot of funny actresses. And with alllll these people on board, Jeff Bridges still anchors the flick with an aw-shucks effortlessness that's ... pure Jeff Bridges.
Boyle on 'Trainspotting' Sequel: All The Cast Have Signed On

Well, cross your fingers, it looks like there might be a sequel to Trainspotting after all. Scotsman.com reported that Danny Boyle has confirmed that "all the actors" from the original cast (Well, not Tommy obviously, but I don't want to spoil it for the uninitiated) will be returning for a film version of Irvine Welsh's Porno (the follow-up to his 1993 novel Trainspotting). Rumblings of a sequel have been going on for years, but considering the relationship between Ewan McGregor and Boyle since their falling out over the casting for The Beach, it seemed that a sequel was not to be.
The mood changed from far-out idea to a real possibility when Boyle became more vocal about the likelihood of a sequel, albeit with a few conditions of his own. But it looked like we were back to square one when Chris had the news that McGregor had supposedly put the brakes on the whole idea. McGregor was attributed with the quote, "They can go ahead and do it if they want, but it will be without me on board." So far, McGregor has been unavailable for comment on Boyle's most recent claim, but if it all works out and McGregor does reprise his role, this could be the Martin and Lewis reunion for this generation -- not to mention we'll get to see a film we've been wanting for a very long time.

Ewan McGregor on Trainspotting Sequel: He and Boyle are Not Friends, Sequel Will Not Happen

Though director Danny Boyle has been running all over town talking up an eventual Trainspotting sequel, Ewan McGregor reportedly squashed rumors of his own involvement in the film while appearing on the French show L'hebdo Cinéma, which was later picked up by the magazine version of Canal Plus. Since we don't have the original story to link to, take the following with a huge grain of salt. Apparently, McGregor told the show that he "definitely" doesn't want to be a part of the sequel and wasn't fond of the book (Porno) it's based on. He also confirmed his relationship with Boyle is still in ruins following a falling out the two had over a movie role.
The movie in question is The Beach, and McGregor is still pretty pissed off that Boyle (and the powers that be) gave the lead role to Leonardo DiCaprio after McGregor had starred in Boyle's three previous films (Trainspotting, A Life Less Ordinary, Shallow Grave). Since DiCaprio was coming off Titanic, it was a no-brainer to cast him over McGregor, even though the latter actor probably would have helped produce a better film. Part of the reason why the book is so great is due to the main character being British; once DiCaprio signed on, that aspect was thrown out the window. Though we don't have any firm quotes from McGregor on the subject, Boyle is certainly open to patching things up with his one-time mate. On McGregor's involvement in a possible Trainspotting sequel, Boyle recently said: "He's one of those guys who can do it, who has got that magic thing that people love. You don't come across it very often." Aww, isn't it about time these two guys hug it out?
Danny Boyle: A Script For 'Trainspotting 2' Has Been Written

Like most people, I first fell in love with Danny Boyle's work after watching what he did with Irvine Welsh's Trainspotting. Needless to say, I'll never look at going to the bathroom the same way again. It's been ten years since the movie Trainspotting hit the scene and transformed Danny Boyle into the kind of director you keep an eye on -- the kind fully capable of sneaking up on you with a masterpiece, as he did with 28 Days Later and Millions. (As I've said before, The Beach would've been a whole lot better had they not cast Leo DiCaprio straight off the Titanic, and let Boyle follow Garland's book a bit more closely.)
What some folks do not know is that Welsh wrote a sequel to Trainspotting, called Porno. And, when IGN recently sat down with Boyle, they asked him whether he was interested in re-visiting Renton, Spud, Sick Boy and Begbie for another round of insanity. The good news is that Boyle and his gang have been given the rights to the sequel, and John Hodge (who penned the Trainspotting adaptation) has already turned in a very early script. Unfortunately, Boyle's angle depends on the actors aging a bit more. He says, "They need to have a bit of age. Our take on it is, their headiness -- these guys who lived at the absolute brink, felt they were invincible and felt they could abuse themselves to the absolute limit - suddenly hit middle age. They're in their forties and they look it -- but they don't really look it, those actors."
Boyle goes on to say that they will re-visit the project once the original actors "get a bit older." Since Ewan McGregor is only 37, I hope they don't wait until the guy hits, say, 45 or so -- I'm not sure I could hold out for another eight years when all they really have to do is throw some make-up on these guys. Heck, if Boyle can make it look like a bunch of astronauts are heading toward the sun, I'm sure he can convincingly age a group of actors by five years, right?
That Man: Peter Berlin screening in NYC
Filed under: Documentary », Gay & Lesbian », NSFW »
It takes a special kind of
man to have his penis compared to Jane Mansfield's breasts, but that's how John Waters describes gay icon Peter Berlin
in a clip from That Man: Peter Berlin, which opens today in
New York City. Berlin, a pornstar who spent the 60s, 70s, and 80s starring in porn films, modeling, and getting
photographed by the likes of Warhol and Mapplethorpe, was the inspiration for Owen Wilson's character
in Zoolander. The "legend," now 63, also created his own clothing to accent some of his
body's more "impressive" features. I understand why he would want to flaunt it, but at the same time I think
I'd feel uncomfortable being too exposed. I imagine some scenario where I'm suddenly being chased by a moose and have
to leap a barbed wire fence to save myself. I'm just saying I'd like to be better protected in that instance. That
probably doesn't happen in NYC very often, but still, one has to be cautious. Berlin's next project, he claims, will
involve numerous video tapes he's created of himself having sex. Also, tapes of himself watching himself have sex on
tape. He has lots of sex, I think that's what we're supposed to derive from this.
