George Lucas NOT Directing 'Red Tails'

Filed under: RumorMonger », George Lucas », Steven Spielberg », War »

Just to clear up, George Lucas is not directing his first non-Star Wars movie in 35 years. I repeat, George Lucas is not returning to the director's chair. Once again ... never mind, I think you've got it.

Two days ago there was an AP story about Lucasfilm's Tuskegee Airmen film, Red Tails -- perhaps you caught my post -- but it didn't note what Lucas' involvement would be. As I wrote, the article seemed to assume that he was directing the project. A number of sites around the web also treated the news (more like an update) as if it claimed that Lucas was indeed helming the WWII-set picture. Others speculated that he was taking the reigns. Well, he's not. He's merely serving as executive producer. There is no director signed on yet.

George Lucas' WWII Movie Moves Forward

Late August was the last time we mentioned George Lucas' Red Tails, but considering the Star Wars director has been wanting to make the film for decades, less than a year between reports is not too bad. Plus, the new AP story about the film's preproduction couldn't come at a better time. People are currently talking about Spike Lee's upcoming African Americans in WWII film, Miracle of St. Anna, and Red Tails also focuses on blacks fighting in the war. Specifically it deals with the 332nd Fighter Group of the U.S. Army Air Corp., otherwise known as the Tuskegee Airmen, the first all-black unit of pilots, bombardiers and navigators.

The AP story mostly features quotes from Tuskegee vets, who share their memories and their hopes for what the film will show. But there's also some minor updates courtesy of producer Rick McCallum, who's reportedly now scouting locations in the Czech Republic and Italy. He says that Lucas is hoping to begin shooting later this year or early 2009 and that the script by John Ridley (Three Kings) "balances difficult and painful issues with what is, at its heart, the story of men with a dream to fly and serve their country." So, apparently the script is finished, yet it's still unclear who will be directing Red Tails; the AP story almost seems to assume that Lucas will be holding the reigns himself.

Rick McCallum Updates on Star Wars 3D

Among the hottest of rumors in the geek community awhile back was the "Lucas wants to turn the classic trilogy into 3D films" announcement. Fans (myself included) were naturally very exacted by the concept of a full-on 3D version of their beloved SW trilogy, but have been generally left wondering about a time table for such an event. Rick McCallum, the ever-present producer for Lucas Films, has recently shed some light on the subject, suggesting the release dates could possibly be as early as 2007.

The major hold up currently seems to be the number of theaters capable of handling the 3D action. Lucas and company are hoping for two or three thousand (they consider this the point when it would become truly economically advantageous to release the films), while slightly over 1500 currently exist. With this round, George Lucas may well finally claim the number one box office total (in cash dollars, not ticket sales) spot from the Titanic. His re-release of the classic trilogy prior to Episode 1 certainly put him within striking distance, and a new round of showings with added 3D glory might give him the final jump he needs.

Star Wars Boss Rick McCallum Admits Prequels Were Unsatisfying

In a recent discussion with Empire Online, Star Wars mega-producer Rick McCallum made a passive admission that the prequel films did not live up to the expectations of...well, a large number of fans. Many SW fans have been vocally critical of the new trilogy - enjoying it for what it is while lamenting that it was not what it could have been. McCallum was primarily discussing the plans for the announced Star Wars live-action television program, which he claims is still at least another 18 months away. The producer says of the one hour episodic program which will take place between eps three and four "...it's fantastic; we've got some incredible writers. It's going to be much darker, much more character-based, and I think it's going to be everything the fans always wanted the prequels to be." (emphasis added)

Well, Rick, it's good to know that you are aware of the general disappointment surrounding the new trilogy. While I, perhaps, don't dislike it as much as many fans, I do readily admit that it was not the return I have spent the last twenty years of my life dreaming about. Here's hoping you can somehow recapture the magic for your new program.
