Rodriguez Picks His 'Predators' Director

Lots of movie geeks (yes, like us) have been abuzz with the vague discussions regarding the Predator remake / reboot / sequel / whatever. All we really knew was that the generally kick-ass Robert Rodriguez was on board to oversee, as the producer, but now we have confirmation have Robert's good pal that the director has been named. And that name ... is Nimrod.

Nimrod Antal, to be precise, who fest-goers will know from Kontroll and thriller fans will recall from Vacancy. Harry's got a whole bunch of cool info on the project right here, but I've chosen a small segment that makes me particularly happy: "It involves a very intense group of people stranded on a Predator planet discovering unspeakable horrors." Yes! Plus Mr. Rodriguez shares some enthusiasm from a Fox colleague: "No one is going to talk about AVP again after this movie. I stake my life on it."

Hell, just give us a knock-down, drag-out Predator fest with a few meaty characters, a whole lot of action, and maybe a few storytelling hooks. That'll make a whole lot of people happy. Speaking only for myself, heck, I thought both of Antal's films were darn good, so I've no reason to doubt RR's call on this one!

Neil Marshall in Talks to Direct 'Predators'

Neil Marshall on the set of 'Doomsday'My principles may be crumbling, just a little. Neil Marshall (pictured) is in talks to direct Predators, according to Bloody Disgusting, citing an anonymous tipster. At this point, it's very much a rumor -- for all we know, Marshall was visiting a friend in the commissary at 20th Century Fox and was seen in close proximity to an executive -- but of all the possible candidates to helm a sequel to the alien hunter franchise, I'd definitely be down with Marshall.

He has three features to his credit: The Descent is the best and most widely-acclaimed, a feverish nightmare in which a group of women explore a cave and discover deadly denizens, to their dismay. I got a huge kick out of the bloody, funny, pulse-pounding Dog Soldiers, featuring Scottish soldiers on a training run who encounter werewolves, and, though I was decidedly in the minority, really enjoyed the post-Apocalyptic action epic Doomsday. The latter was his first with a Hollywood studio (Rogue Pictures). Upcoming is his "old-style swords 'n' armor action epic" Centurion, which looks promising but doesn't yet have US distribution.

Robert Rodriguez is on board to produce. Predators is already set to be released on July 7, 2010, so Fox will have to make a decision soon. Marshall has always written his own scripts; if this rumor proves to be true, either he'll have to pound out a rewrite in a hurry or take what Fox gives him. Considering the track records of Marshall and Fox, there's reason for both optimism ... and despair.

Cast This: The Live-Action 'Jetsons' Movie

Filed under: Comedy », Casting », Fandom », Family Films », Remakes and Sequels »

Now that Robert Rodriguez won't be making Barbarella anytime in the near future it looks like he has put his live-action Jetson's flick at the front of the pack instead. The director recently told MTV that he hopes to get the film in front of cameras by next year. A script was completed by Adam F. Goldberg (Fanboys) back in 2007, but Rodriguez has been hard at work on a rewrite and keeping quiet about casting prospects.

The Jetsons was the story of a futuristic family living in a world run by sprockets ... and that was about it, really. Each week, George Jetson would get fired, promoted, you name it -- and then head home to his family which consisted of the perfect housewife, a genius son and boy-crazy daughter. Their dog would mispronounce words; the robot maid would get a few wisecracks in and voila! A cartoon classic was born.

I'm not a big Jetsons fan, but I do love to play fantasy casting director, so here are my picks for a live-action Jetsons:

George Jetson: Steve Carell
Despite having a spotty record on the big-screen, Carell proved once before that he can walk away from a TV adaptation with his dignity intact. He not only has the look down, but he can play a lovable loser with the best of them and has a knack for physical comedy. What more could you ask for in a George Jetson?

Jane Jetson: Reese Witherspoon
Jane wasn't exactly a ditz, but let's just say she wasn't the sharpest sprocket in the pile either. Witherspoon has made bank on playing these kinds of characters in the past, and I think she has just the right amount of uptight to be the doting wife (and straight man) to her wackier better half.

After the jump: my final picks...

Is 'Barberella' Back On with Robert Luketic?

'Barbella' (1968)Robert Rodriguez remaking a campy 60s sci-fi flick is one thing, but Robert Luketic? Robert Luketic, the man who perpetrated Monster-in-Law? The director of Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!? That's the guy they want to redo Roger Vadim's 1968 Barbarella? Well, that's the rumor reported by Starpulse, who claim that "the project has been saved" by Luketic.

As Monika Bartyzel recapped last month, Robert Rodriguez wanted a big budget to fulfill his big dreams, and Universal balked at the budget. German financiers offered him $70 million but wanted the production in Europe, and Rodriguez balked at spending all that time away from his children. So no Rodriguez, no Rose McGowan -- the perfect choice for the character -- no modern take on Barbarella, the role in which Jane Fonda thrilled teenage boys everywhere with her slinky sexiness.

What would another Robert do with the project? The Australian Luketic famously debuted as a director with Legally Blonde, a frothy comedy that boosted the fortunes of Reese Witherspoon, and more recently made the flashy 21, which grossed more than $150 million worldwide. Here's an out-of-left-field thought: what if he cast Kate Bosworth as the erotic, leather-clad heroine? The two first worked together in Tad Hamilton before reuniting for 21. While we wait for the rumor to be confirmed or denied, who would you cast as Barbarella?

Alas, 'Barbarella' is Dead

In the vast void of remakes and sequels, there was one I was actually happy about -- Robert Rodriguez's take on Barbarella. Rose McGowan was the absolute perfect choice (read why here), and I knew the Double R could make something fun from it. But then his plans needed a huge budget, and scared Universal into their bank vault to protect the monies. Hope might have lingered, but now there's no reason to hold on.

In a conversation with MTV, Rodriguez said that while a German company offered to fork over $70 mil so he could make the film, he wasn't keen on having to spend all that time overseas. Naturally -- how would he see his kids or make his late-night Latin meals? So he said no, and now the project is dead and he's moved on. The most we can hope to get is a potential release of the artwork that shows plans, and how cool it would've been. Tease.

I have a wild idea: Make a faux trailer and at least give us something. Hell, it could be tacked onto Machete! On a small scale, Rodriguez could show us at least some of his vision. We could see Rose fight the Orgasmatron! I'm thinking a short film trailer, like the tantalizing Trailer for a Remake of Gore Vidal's Caligula. Who's with me?

UPDATE: Robert Rodriguez Grabs 'Machete' and Fights Some 'Predators'

This time they f**ked with the right Mexican!

When I wrote about Eli Roth cooking up a feature helping of Thanksgiving, I couldn't help but think about Machete, and wish he was heading for the big screen. Just a week later, my wish has been granted! If only that could happen every day. Variety reports that Robert Rodriguez has written a script for Machete, and hopes to grab Danny Trejo and start production this June in Austin. But he won't helm this alone; this time around, he's grabbing longtime editor Ethan Maniquis to co-direct.

This blissful non-studio film (his first since El Mariachi) will follow Machete, a Mexican ex-Federale who hides as a day laborer until he gets "double-crossed by a corrupt state senator." He is, of course, also an expert knife-wielder and dude who can do some stunning things with a bike and a gun.

But that's not all. We've all been wondering what Rodriguez has been doing when he should have been making Sin City, Barbarella, and all the other projects that he's talked about. He's been writing Machete, and, well ... Predators -- yes, a sequel to Arnold Schwarzenegger's 1987 alien fest Predator. There's no further word on the project right now, so I'll leave it up to you to imagine what RR will make of it.

Are these the projects you want Rodriguez focusing on? Or is there something else you want to see him busy himself with?

UPDATE: 20th Century Fox has set a July 7, 2010 release date for Robert Rodriguez's Predators, meaning this will be one of next summer's biggest films. Rodriguez, while producing, will not write or direct. Will it be R-rated, or will they try to get a PG-13 out of it to appeal to a wider audience during the peak of the summer movie season? These are things we'll definitely be talking about ... [via erc Box Office]

Who Wants to Buy 'Sin City'?

Filed under: Action », Thrillers », Deals », Noir », Mystery & Suspense », RumorMonger », Celebrities and Controversy », The Weinstein Co. », DIY/Filmmaking », Newsstand », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

Sin City is the series that just can't catch a break. Last week, IESB.net was reporting that the Weinstein Company / Dimension had lost the rights to Sin City, and that the franchise was being quietly shopped around. The rumors were hotly denied by the Weinsteins ... but now The Hollywood Reporter is saying the same darn thing.

While the Weinsteins continue to maintain that they hold the rights, producers all around town are saying that Frank Miller's "estate" has been shopping around those same rights. It's unclear if they have lapsed due to the failure to renew or move on the property, but it seems strange that they could have expired so soon.

This is a rumor that I think we all hope comes true. I'd like to see Sin City land at a studio willing to actually put A Dame to Kill For into production instead of just talking about it. It's been four (count 'em, four) years since Sin City, with "production starting in a matter of weeks!" reports being issued every three months or so. The talent remains enthusiastic and attached. Fans are clamoring for the rest of the sleazy series. It's a no brainer for any other studio, but the Weinstein Company seems to believe delaying films until the end of the world is a sound business principle.

What would you like to see ultimately happen with the next Sin City movie, and who do you think would take the best care of it?

Robert Rodriguez is Nervewracked by Another New Project

There was a time when word of anything Robert Rodriguez-related was music to my ears. Now, I just wonder why he releases anything about a new project. It inevitably disappears, gets put on the backburner, or whatever has been happening to all of the projects he's supposed to be involved in -- the world of Sin City, the Barbarella remake, Women in Chains...

Maybe this is the project that will change it all... Variety reports that Rodriguez is teaming up with old studio friend Dimension for a new futuristic thriller called Nerverackers, which he will both write and direct. The film will focus on a dude named Joe Tezca in the year 2085. He's "part of an elite unit dispatched to quell a crime wave in a theoretically perfect future society."

What's most surprising about this news is that there's already a release date -- April 16, 2010. I guess this means he won't be a one-man movie maker this time around, because that's not a whole heck of a lot of time. And it also suggests that the other projects he's been attached to are either null and void, or are on the backburner for another year. Any bets on whether Rose gets a role?

Whatever happens, he just needs to make something. Since he doesn't have a cooking show, I need more cooking school.

'Red Sonja' Draws Her Spoiler-Filled Sword

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », RumorMonger », Scripts », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels », Images »

I'm a recent convert to Red Sonja fandom. Despite that she seems right up my alley (80s fantasy, chainmail, tresses as brilliant as my own), I've resisted reading the comics for a long time. Mostly because everytime any of my serious comic friends caught me eying one, they made fun of me. Also, there's always the feeling Red Sonja wasn't really meant for my eyes. But, I was recently convinced to buy Brian Reed's run, which is an excellent way to be introduced to the character -- and I know you all want to be, since she's getting that Robert Rodriguez/Rose McGowan movie in 2010.

And what of that movie? It always seems like just when you're getting into a character, all buzz on his or her movie vanishes. But luckily, we've got some new art, courtesy of the Movieset Blog. I've cropped a bit of it above, and we've added the bigger, boob-filled version to our Red Sonja Comic Con gallery below. I'm not sure why she seems to be pulling her sword out from the middle of her skull, but I'll be damned if Rose McGowan isn't winning me over as the She-Devil. This is the first time she's looked the part to me, but I'll have to see how well she wields it before completely coming around.

Attached to the picture (if you can focus your eyes) is a very detailed premise of the film. It's pretty spoiler filled, so read at your own risk. It's Sonja's origin story, her life as an outlaw, and her decision to join the fight against evil magician, Kulan Gath. It's total pulp, which thrills me, because that's what I dig about Red Sonja. There's slave mines, vengance, epic battles -- all the stuff of 80s D&D fantasy. Call me crazy, but I'm starting to get really excited to see this.

SDCC Panel: Robert Rodriguez's 'Red Sonja'

Above: Rose McGowan licking blood off a sword

The room was packed for the Red Sonja panel today featuring Robert Rodriguez, Rose McGowan and director Doug Aaroniokoski, and images of Rose McGowan in that skimpy metal bikini were everywhere (what you see above was one of around 2,000 t-shirts handed out. Below are easy-to-read notes on this particular panel:

-- Red Sonja will hit theaters in the fourth quarter of 2009 (one imagines for Christmas)
-- Robert Rodriguez is acting as a "hands on" producer, and will co-direct a good chunk of the flick. Not only is he doing this for Red Sonja, but he's also negotiating to produce a new Conan film. It seems as if they would eventually (if both are popular enough) cross promote between films.
-- The tone will be darker, like the book, and when asked if it would be R rated, Rodriguez said, "My name is double 'R'!"
--Also on tone and scope, McGowan (who's quite lively and quick-witted in person) said it's "hard, cold, dirty and bloody." And that she's looking forward to "taking a big giant sword and killing a lot of people."
-- Training is already underway, and McGowan is working with the same swords experts who helped out on Matrix and Ninja Assassin.
-- Rodriguez also admitted that Barbarella is officially off, and that Red Sonja has taken its place. He said financing of $70 million did come through from Germany for a shoot next year, but he's obligated to shoot something else for Miramax. He's negotiating right now to direct a "huge summer movie" -- but he wouldn't say which.
-- On the character, Rose McGowan said: "I will not have a mullet!" The crowd cheered.
-- Red Sonja will be shot on location (scouting now) and will use some green screen.
-- Asked who should star in the new Conan, RR shouted: "Danny Trejo!"
-- On Machete becoming a film, RR said they have plans to turn it into a Mexploitation triple feature disc (and somewhere on that disc will be a trailer for a sequel to Planet Terror.)
-- On Sin City 2, Frank Miller has finished writing the script, but no one knows whether or not that's going to happen with each working on different projects.

P.S. For those who think Rodriguez and McGowan aren't a couple anymore, check out this candid snapshot (taken right before RR kissed RM on the forehead).

Gallery from the panel below. My opinion: It looks pretty hot, and while I've bashed McGowan in the past, I'm willing to give her a chance to kick some ass here. This will be her time to shine.
