Stupid Batman Rumor #368: Riddle Me ... Eddie Murphy?!

Methinks the rumor-mongers are getting lazy -- this has to be one of the most ridiculous bunches of gossip that I've heard in a while, but (as usual) it's too amusing to not share.

The Sun actually claims to have the scoop on the next installment of Christopher Nolan's Batman franchise. Once again, the Riddler's name is coming up, but instead of an intriguing choice like Johnny Depp, they say -- in all their infinite wisdom -- that it's Eddie Murphy. But just to make it even more unbelievable (and obnoxious) -- the report also states that Shia LaBeouf has signed on to play Robin.

I'd be utterly shocked if Nolan chose Murphy to be the Riddler; however, I'd be certain that Nolan had lost his mind if he decided to reinvent Batman Forever. That's just not his style, and why folks like Spielberg might love Shia, I think we can all agree that he would be an awkward choice for Robin -- if Nolan even considered the possibility. The Dark Knight made phenomenal progress with the world of superheroes when Heath Ledger provided the feature with such a layered performance, so we need someone with solid, intriguing, and dynamic talents. Any suggestions to give The Sun better material to run with? Oh, and in case you need us to spell it out for ya: This one ain't true.

Note: In cooler Batman news, though, Mark "Luke Skywalker" Hamill will voice The Joker in the new video game Batman: Arkham Asylum, while Kevin Conroy will voice Batman. Both have voiced the characters before; Hamill in animated Batman and Justice League programs and Conroy, well, for anything that wasn't a live-action movie.

Discuss: Should Robin Show Up in Nolan's Batman Movies?

Surfing the internets today, I came across a rant over at JoBlo on why the character Robin should stay real far away from Christopher Nolan's Batman films. Now, keep in mind I'm writing this as someone who has not seen The Dark Knight yet. In case you weren't aware, the film screened for press in Los Angeles over the weekend (including our own James Rocchi, who told me it was "awesome"), and since then I've been using every editor's trick in the book to steer clear of spoilers. It's rough, real rough, but I've been trying my best. So know that there won't be any Dark Knight spoilers in this post -- and understand that I'm coming at this from the vantage point of someone who does not know whether The Dark Knight opens the door for Robin to show up in a third flick.

That said, over at JoBlo, Sturdy makes the argument that Robin just isn't an interesting character, and that he's never "worked, whether it be on film, TV or in the comics." Of course, the whole homoerotic theme pops up, and how could it not when you have a young, lean, clean-cut gymnast who shacks up with an even prettier, wealthy industrialist who likes fast toys. Yeah. Kicking it up another notch, Sturdy goes so far as to say that "if you got together all of today's best writers and filmmakers and locked them in a room, they wouldn't be able to come up with a Robin storyline that worked."

Really? Is Robin a franchise killer or is Sturdy missing the importance of his character?

Chris O'Donnell is Back! And in 'Max Payne!'

No, unfortunately, they didn't decide to write in a role for Robin at the last minute, Dark Knight fans. But according to Entertainment Weekly, our old friend Chris O'Donnell looks to be returning to the big screen in a pretty big way. Apparently the dude has landed a role in Max Payne, that video game adaptation starring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis (strange on-screen coupling, but I dig it). Folks who aren't too familiar with Kunis, or simply remember her from those days on That 70's Show, will need to check out this gal in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Not only is she about to become the next HOT thing, but she's definitely a better actress than, say, Jessica Alba.

But back to my man O'Donnell. At one point, this guy was the go-to, guy-next-door actor. Then ... nada. Now, however, O'Donnell has taken a page from the Patrick Dempsey playbook by starring in several episodes of Grey's Anatomy. (Not only do they revive patients on that show, but they also revive entire careers!) EW says O'Donnell will play executive Jason Colvin in the film, which is based on Rockstar Games' shoot-'em-up game. Wahlberg will play a cop whose family was slain, while Kunis is an assassin out to avenge her sister's death. Together ... well, I'm sure a lot of "sparks" will fly.

Max Payne currently has an October 17th release date.

Live Action 'Teen Titans' Movie Heats Up!

It's been awhile since news of a live-action Teen Titans movie surfaced, what with all the hoopla surrounding Justice League. But when ComicMix sat down with writer-producer Mark Verheiden, the guy had a ton to say about where Warner Bros. is currently at with that Teen Titans movie, as well as what his plans are for the characters and the story. Regarding the script, Verheiden says, "I turned in a pass to Warner Bros. right before the strike and we've talked about that and I'm going to get back into it. I'll address some of their thoughts and work on the next draft."

On where he plans to go with the story: "We're going to have some strong adversaries, or antagonists, but really, I'm trying to concentrate on the core group of these characters, who we meet at a point when they're at the cusp of adulthood ... It's no secret Robin is in this movie, so what if you were him, after living in the shadow of Bruce Wayne and Batman, and now you wanted to go off on your own and become your own man, your own superhero? That's got to be a huge thing to overcome. That makes it interesting for me ... I'm also looking to the work of Marv Wolfman and George Perez as the touchstone of inspiration for the film."

Wolfman and Perez, of course, were responsible for the 1980s Teen Titans revival. Check out the full interview with Verheiden (including all sorts of Battlestar Galactica stuff) over at ComicMix. What do you think about this Teen Titans flick? Could it be better or worse than the upcoming Justice League movie?

Warner Bros. Developing 'Teen Titans' Comic

For anyone disappointed that Robin has been left out of the recent Batman films (I hope you are few), there is good news: Warner Bros. is developing a movie version of the DC comic Teen Titans. Robin is one of the original members of the young super team, and though he has not always been part of the group, it is certainly a possibility that he'll make it into the movie -- if only because of his familiarity to mainstream audiences. The Hollywood Reporter does report that Nightwing, a character who is sort of like an alternative version of Robin (he is the older incarnation of the original Robin, Dick Grayson), is already a definite character. However, because the continuities of DC Comics confuse the dickens out of me, I really have no idea if Nightwing and (the more-recognizable) Robin could both be a part of the movie's team.

Warner Bros.' interest in doing a Titans movie is not surprising, but it is interesting considering the studio is also currently working on a Justice League film. Mostly, I see this project as being an attempt to cater more to a young audience as well as to market the thing as comparable to X-Men. But will it actually be hip enough to attract the kids and smart enough to be as good as the (first two) X-Men films? So far the studio is on the right track with the hiring of Mark Verheiden to script the movie. Comic geeks and TV fans may know Verheiden as a writer for the comic books The Mask and Timecop, as well as their movie adaptations, and as writer-producer for the shows Smallville and Battlestar Galactica. The movie is being produced by Akiva Goldsman (Constantine) and Kerry Foster.

Batman Spoils Robin's Big Date

Filed under: Comedy », Shorts », Fandom », DIY/Filmmaking », Home Entertainment », Comic/Superhero/Geek »

I was going to stick this into next week's Eat My Shorts, but after watching the following short film, I simply had to write about it immediately. A good friend of mine was telling me about this hilarious Batman-themed short last night and, after going off on how cool it was, we were lucky enough to find it online.

Starring Sam Rockwell (Batman) and Justin Long (Robin), the film was directed by James Duffy and is called Robin's Big Date. Basically, Robin invites a girl (Callie Thorne) to a bar in an attempt to ask her out. However, Batman soon shows up and ruins the entire thing. I'm not sure how Duffy (whose only credit on IMDB is this film) managed to snag the top-notch talent but, seeing as the pic was shot in 2005, this was right before Long began starring in those Mac ads which, I assume, means he was a bit more accessible. As far as Rockwell goes, everyone I've spoken to says the guy is a cool dude, down for just about anything. Regardless, if you have a few minutes, I recommend you check it out.

[Thanks Aaron]
