Our Favorite Summers: 1987

Filed under: Fandom », Summer Movies »

There are no songs written about the summer of '87, but I remember well. As well as someone who is in her 30's can remember when she was 11, anyway. There were some fine movies out that summer, and when I say fine, I mean "I'm Netflixing this ASAP" fine or "this was totally awesome when I was 11" fine. There were the Bangles, the Borscht Belt, big schwartzes, and much more.

5/1 -- The Allnighter: Did someone forget to tell me that there's a romcom beach bunny movie starring Susanna "Manic Monday" Hoffs and Joan Cusack with a Pam Grier cameo? I don't care if it got 0% on Rotten Tomatoes, I am adding this to my Netflix Slumber Party list right now.

5/8 -- Hot Pursuit // River's Edge: Another "I'm so lovable yet dorky" John Cusack vehicle versus Crispin Glover, Keanu Reeves, Dennis Hopper dancing with a blow-up doll, and a dead body? The grown-up me says River's Edge all the way! If you've ever heard Crispin Glover humor audiences with his actual Southern Cali accent as heard in River's Edge, you'll know it's a treat. On the other hand, Hot Pursuit was written and directed by Steven Lisberger, who wrote the original Tron as well as its remake!

Spin-ematical: New on DVD for 5/5

No skipping this week! Bump a couple of these up to "buy" if your budget allows.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
F. Scott Fitzgerald's short story of a man who ages backwards becomes a staggering, three-hour demonstration of superb make-up and seamless computer effects under the direction of David Fincher. Despite the length, only one note is played -- everyone else's pity for "poor Benjamin" -- while the man himself (Brad Pitt) remains a frustrating cipher. With Cate Blanchett and Taraji P. Henson. Also on Blu-ray. Rent it.

Last Chance Harvey
While in London for his daughter's wedding, New York jingle-writer Dustin Hoffman romances Emma Thompson. "A movie for grown-ups, but not in that clammy, Oscar-craving way that would make it untenable; it's a movie about people that takes place in the real world," said James Rocchi in his review for Cinematical. Directed by Joel Hopkins. Also on Blu-ray. Rent it.

Wendy and Lucy
Michelle Williams stars as "a down-on-her-luck girl who's hoping to turn things around for herself with a summer job at a fishing cannery in Alaska," wrote Kim Voynar in her Cinematical review. When her car breaks down and her beloved dog goes missing in a small town in Oregon, she is "forced to make a series of increasingly difficult choices, and to rely upon the kindness (or not) of strangers to resolve her plight." Directed by Kelly Reichardt (the superb Old Joy), who "excels at capturing these small, very human moments in the overall stories of her characters' lives." Rent it.

Buy Daryl Hannah's Biodiesel El Camino!

Mermaids don't need cars, which must be the reason that Daryl Hannah is auctioning off her 1983 Chevrolet El Camino. And you can bid for it on eBay! Sure, it's not the same as having a car that appeared in a movie, but you'd still be buying a car that you can say was driven by Pris from Blade Runner. Plus, you can make a copy of that photo of her and the car and tape it to the dashboard. But why else might you want the thing? Well, it runs on biodiesel, which means it's better for the environment than whatever you're driving. Don't know anything about biodiesel? Don't worry: Hannah is throwing in a resource guide and a fueling station that's said to be about the size of a garbage can.

Apparently Hannah has been trying to sell the car for a couple months now, but this is its first time on eBay. According to Ecorazzi.com, it wasn't a matter of not being able to sell the car; rather, she had too many inquiries and couldn't figure out a better way to make a deal than to auction the car off fair and square. You have until Friday evening to attempt to reach the actress' reserve, which must be more than $9,700.00, since that's the current bid as of this writing. So, what do you think? Interested? Then do as Roxanne, I mean Elle Driver, I mean Daryl Hannah says: "woo hoo! kick oil! no war required... 2 see more about bio-diesel + the el camino - ... go 2 dhlovelife.com ... so get up and get off the fossil fuels!!!"
