'Scary Movie 5's Reboot Agenda is Code for Cost Savings
Filed under: Comedy », Horror », RumorMonger », The Weinstein Co. »
Are you one of the remaining fans who contributed to the $90-million haul Scary Movie 4 brought in at the box office? If so, I hope that series star Anna Faris wasn't what drew you to the horror-spoof shenanigans, because common sense says that she's likely not sticking around for the newly announced Scary Movie 5. Cinema Blend has it on good authority that the Weinstein Company is gearing up for a fifth trip to the comedy well. Only this time around the objective appears to be orbiting Hollywood's favorite new buzzword: reboot. Now rebooting a franchise that, by design, is a free-flow of unconnected, topical plot points from entry-to-entry means that the studio plans on getting rid of the one thing that unites all of the films together: Anna Faris as the delightfully vacant Cindy and Regina Hall as Cindy's amusingly verbose best friend Brenda. Personally I think that's a terrible idea, as Faris and Hall play so well off each other that they are, by far, the only good thing remaining about the series. But if the agenda is to reboot the franchise, then that means they've got to go.
From the business side of things it does make sense. More recognizable than Anna Faris is the Scary Movie brand name, so Joe and Jane Moviegoer are not going to be up in arms at the thought of a Cindy-less romp around familiar gags involving various bodily functions and people hitting their head on things over and over and over. All most will care about is seeing a new Scary Movie popping up in their local theater listings for the weekend, so the Weinsteins are fiscally wise to cut out the one element of the film that's going to have a fixed price tag upfront. Considering Scary Movie 5 is bound to make similar returns with another cute final gal in its lead, the currently hurting studio doesn't have much incentive to keep her around.
Wayans Brothers Tackle 'The Munsters,' Hate the Latest 'Scary Movie' Installments

For those of you who are already sick to death of all the big-screen TV adaptations, you're not gonna like this latest news. According to an interview over at MoviePictureFilm.com with Shawn Wayans, the guys who brought you Scary Movie, White Chicks and Little Man are gearing up to bring The Munsters back to life up on the big screen. Yup, The Munsters. Ya know, the 1960s television show that starred the late Fred Gwynne as Herman Munster, the father of a family of friendly monsters. Al Lewis played Grandpa? Butch Patrick was young Eddie? Remember? Wayans says, "We're contemporizing it ... something I want to clear up is that we're not going to be in it. We're just writing and producing it. We're going to get some white people and paint them green." Might I start off by suggesting you cast the winners of Cinematical's Halloween costume contest. Different characters, but they certainly have the whole green thing down.
So will the boys go raunchy with their new, updated Munsters look? Wayans says the flick will be PG-13, partly because their R-rated movies weren't making a lot of money; they claim audiences were seeing them, but kids were buying tickets for other movies and sneaking into theirs. Hence, they'd like to lower the rating to allow more people to gain access. And when The Munsters crashes and burns (and it should), they'll probably blame the theater employees for giving away the wrong tickets. And then they'll blame us for "accidentally" going to see the wrong movie. But Wayans, who wanted to make it clear that his family was not at all involved with Scary Movie 3, 4 or the upcoming part crap 5, did get one thing right: That once they left the Scary Movie franchise, things went downhill.
When asked about the spoof sequels, Wayans replied, "Yeah, they sucked. Scary Movie 2 was better than both of them and it wasn't our best one, we know that, we were rushed to do that movie...the studio that was doing them (pauses) ... [interviewer asks, "The Weinsteins?"] ... "Yeah (sighs) that's all I have to say. Don't worry though, we got some more R rated movies coming." In the meantime, Moviehole (who turned us on to this story) claims Sophie Monk has joined Scary Movie 5, and she'll be playing Anna Faris' evil twin sister. Additionally, Hulk Hogan is rumored to be up for a part as well. Oh boy -- The Munsters and Scary Movie 5! If sh*t could talk, I think it would say: "Get ready for one helluva 2008 people!"
Scary Movie is Turning Into the Land Before Time

I was in a Suncoast Video store not very long ago, and I saw a collector's edition of the Land Before Time movies. The box, which contained every
LBT film made thus far, was roughly the size of a Hummer. The big one, not the new H2. I believe David Zucker and company (who have taken over the franchise from the
Wayans) are trying to match that feat with the Scary Movie
line. Part 4 has yet to hit the theaters (it'll be there on the 14th of this month) and Zucker has already announced
his intentions to create a 5th.
Zucker told Sci Fi Wire that it will
be a while before script writing will officially start, however, because ... well ... they need to wait for more films
to parody. Zucker said he and his team wait to see the audience reaction to any given horror film, and only include
those that do well. The Ring 2, for instance, will not be
lampooned by the Scary Movie franchise. And of course, Zucker is also hard at work on a Superhero!
spoof film, which will take any possibly scary superhero film moments out of contention for inclusion in the Scary
Movie line.
Honestly, I have yet to see any of the Scary Movie films, and I think I'll be
rather content to keep it that way. Not that I dislike Zucker (I rather enjoy his work, in fact), I just don't watch
hardly any horror flicks, so most of the spoof hilarity would be lost on me. Now the Superhero film will
likely be a different story...
