Salva's Back With Another 'Jeepers Creepers' Sequel

If you mashed Jeepers Creepers and Jeepers Creepers 2 into one flick, you'd have a very long and very familiar horror film that starts off on the right foot and then slowly gets a lot more stupid. But hey, they both made money so nobody act surprised when I tell you that writer/director Victor Salva is about to get rolling on Jeepers Creepers 3.

According to Fango, both Salva and actor Ray Wise will be returning for the follow-up -- which I've no doubt will debut on DVD. Here's what the director told Fangoria: "It's tentatively titled Jeepers Creepers 3: The Creeper Walks Among Us*. It includes a prologue in the Old West and might bring back several characters from the first two films 20 years later. The script and story will be big on scares and give us plenty more of the traditional Creeper creepiness, with a few more bits thrown in about what it might be and where it came from."

He then goes on to lobby MGM for a theatrical release: "Each [ Jeepers flick] went on to make over $100 million apiece on DVD. I believe a theatrical release is critical to this kind of success on video. I don't think you can have one without the other, and it would be a shame not to be able to see what I have planned for Jeepers III up on the big screen." Uh, Vic? Have you seen Wrong Turn 2? Not to be nasty, but it's a whole lot better than Jeepers Creepers 2, and I highly doubt its distribution plans had anything to do with it. Just make a good flick and let the studio worry about its venue, eh?

(* Yes, I do believe this is a spin on The Creature Walks Among Us (aka Black Lagoon 3). Slightly clever, but a bit too wordy if you ask me.)

MGM Prepares 'Stigmata 2: Bleed Harder'

More news from the world of direct-to-video sequel-dom: Looks like MGM aims to do a video-store follow-up to the 2000 Rupert Wainwright occult thriller in which Patricia Arquette bleeds all the hell over the place. Co-starring Gabriel Byrne and Jonathan Pryce, Stigmata grossed about $50 million bucks -- and probably did pretty well on DVD too. Hence the late-arriving semi-sequel.

According to Shock, the sequel will be written by one Sean Hood, the art director turned screenwriter that horror freaks will no doubt remember from flicks like Cube 2, Crow 4, and Halloween 8. No word yet on who'll be directing the sequel, but hey, Rupert Wainwright's last gig was that abysmal remake of The Fog, so he's probably up for this assignment.

[ Note: The film is not actually going to be called Bleed Harder, but man wouldn't that be funny? ]

UPDATE: Screenwriter Sean Hood has a few things to say about the project (and working in the horror field in general) at his brand-new blog. Check it out.

Monday Morning Poll: Do You Want More Rambo?

Ah, now that Sundance is over (though our coverage will continue through the next day or so), I can finally get back to writing about things that mean something. Case in point: Harvey Weinstein is apparently so happy with the opening for Sly Stallone's latest Rambo installment that he's considering doing another one. Even though Rambo failed to take the number one spot at the box office this weekend (Meet the Spartans? Really America?), that won't stop Weinstein from gushing over the future prospects of our old man in the jungle. Deadline Hollywood tells us Harv feels Rambo will easily do $50 million domestic and about $100 to $150 million overseas. I don't know about you, but those made-up numbers certainly indicate a sequel is warranted.

Says Weinstein, "I like the idea of an older guy kicking ass. Maybe it's because I'm older, too." The big man also dished out a possible plot scenario should Rambo return once again to brutally mutilate tons of bad guys, noting that he'd be down with "bringing the character back to the United States." Yes, please -- and maybe this time it could be set in Central Park where Sly would face off against the Cloverfield monster. Now that's something I'd pay double to see. But what about you? Are you interested in seeing older guys kick ass on screen, or are you automatically attracted to much younger action heroes? And would you be interested in yet another installment in the Rambo franchise?

Do You Want More Rambo?

Author Sells 'I Am Legend' Sequel Rights to WB

It's still way too early to call it a done deal, but given the small nugget of news we just got from STYD.com, it sure looks like WB wants to make a sequel to I Am Legend. (And given the flick's massive box office numbers, that should come as no surprise whatsoever.)

No, there's nothing official just yet: No casting calls or press releases ... yet. But we do know that author Richard Matheson recently sold the sequel rights over to the studio ... which means that someone at Warner Bros. is getting the ball rolling NOW. (And good for Richard Matheson, earning an easy paycheck like that!!) As Shock so accurately points out, this would make the first cinematic follow-up to the oft-lensed source material. (Neither The Last Man on Earth nor The Omega Man earned a sequel, which would make this the first.) Curious to see how they get Will Smith to "return" for the sequel. (Let me guess: It involves cloning.)

Oh, and if you liked the new movie version, cool. Do yourself a (big) favor and read the book now.

Early Details on the 'Host' Sequel (Er, prequel?)

Ever since it premiered at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival, Bong Joon-ho's The Host (Gwoemul) has been earning a lot of fans all over the place (including this very blog), and we started hearing the sequel rumblings almost immediately. (And the flick really holds up well to repeat viewings if you ask me. Queue it and see!)

We've been hearing little dribs and drabs recently, but Twitchfilm's Todd Brown just shared some info that seems to confirm a prequel direction. According to Twitch, "the script is being handled by Korean comic artist Kang Full and is set three years prior to the events of the original film." One possible plot structure involves the excavation of an ancient stream ... an excavation that awakens not one but several ravenous beasties. The producers seem to be shooting for a 2009 release date.

Unfortunately we'll have a new (as yet unnamed) director in the prequel/sequel chair, but since I'm such a pathetic sucker for anything with a giant monster in it, I remain happily optimistic.

Could We Maybe Get a 'Roger Rabbit' Sequel? Someday?

It seems a safe bet that any sort of sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit would be a pretty big hit, but back when the filmmakers were originally thinking about the idea, the concepts just seemed too expensive (and difficult) to tackle. But now with today's CGI magic, it wouldn't be all that tough to get a Roger Rabbit sequel off the ground ... provided you have a solid screenplay, of course.

Don't get too excited just yet, toon-fans, because the sequel certainly isn't about to get rolling anytime soon. But the MTV Movies Blog did just talk to producer Frank Marshall about the possibility of Roger's return, and the guy certainly didn't seem averse to it: "For the first time ever, Marshall also revealed details of the plot of "Roger Rabbit 2," and if you thought Toontown was a trip, you should have seen where they were sending Roger next. "New York!" Marshall enthused of the setting for the second film." (Click here for the full piece.)

The conversation closed with Marshall playfully promising to get in touch with the Pixar boys regarding Roger Rabbit 2, but hey, stranger things have happened.

Superman Seeks Screenwriters!

After collaborating with director Bryan Singer on X2 and Superman Returns, it looks like screenwriters Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty will not be involved with the Super-sequel. According to Variety, Warner Bros. will soon be sifting through ideas from new screenwriters for the project. Despite earlier chatter that the next Superman movie would be sort of a "re-boot," the studio insists it will be a full-bore sequel with Brandon Routh returning for the title role.

Specifically why Harris and Dougherty left the project is anyone's guess -- but most likely the separation was instigated by the studio. (How often do writers "quit" from a property this huge?) No doubt they'll turn up with a few cool projects of their own. Together the guys also wrote Urban Legends: Bloody Mary, so maybe horror sequels are more their specialty. They're both directors in their own right: Harris helmed Imaginary Heroes, and Dougherty's first (a horror flick called Trick 'r Treat) is supposed to hit theaters ... eventually.

Once Singer and the studio have decided on who'll be penning the Superman sequel, you can be sure we'll let you know. Let's just hope Akiva Goldsman is swamped with work these days.

Sean Astin Says a 'Goonies' Sequel is an "Absolute Certainty"

It's one of those mid-'80s movies that everybody still seems to love. Just like A Christmas Story and The Princess Bride and C.H.U.D., Richard Donner's The Goonies has kept a more-than-loyal fanbase over the past two decades. And (of course) every once in a while we hear some vague rumblings about a new sequel or remake or spin-off of some sort ... but nothing ever comes of it.

But the MTV Movies Blog recently had a brief chat with former Goonie Sean Astin, and here's what Mr. Rudy Hobbit had to say: "Steven [Spielberg] and Dick [Donner] and all the powers that be ... they really feel like the thing that made the movie strong was that it was about kids, so they really want to make the next movie about kids...the next generation of Goonies. And they've had a hard time tackling that." He also contends that the sequel is some sort of "absolute certainty," as if maybe it's going into production tomorrow or something. (It's not.)

So the plan is a multi-generational adventure in which the parents tag along with a new batch of treasure-seeking tots? OK, could work, I suppose. Odds are the original screenwriter (Chris Columbus) wouldn't be returning, but if Spielberg and Donner are both on board, you can consider me completely curious. Plus it'd just be fun to see all the old kids again. I mean, we still hang out with Astin, Josh Brolin, Martha Plimpton (sometimes) and Corey Feldman (kinda), but what about Kerri Green, Jeff Cohen and Jonathan Ke Quan? Could we actually get all the Goonies back in one place?

The Fratelli Brothers (Robert Davi and Joe Pantoliano) are of course still around, but mean ol' mama (Anne Ramsey) and goofy-headed Sloth (John Matuszak) left us a few years back. Not to be insensitive, but just about anyone (large) could play Sloth, really. If the sequel does go forward, I'll be very disappointed if Davi and Joey Pants are not invited along. Anyway, read more of Mr. Astin's wishful thinking right here. And while we're at it, someone go ask Steven Spielberg for an Innerspace sequel, eh?

(A pat on the back to the first person who can tell me where that Goonies II pic comes from!)

Looks Like That 'Crank' Sequel is Moving Forward

It was last May when we first started hearing rumblings about the possibility of a Crank sequel, but as anyone who's seen the flick can tell you -- the ending doesn't exactly lend itself to follow-up options. Let's just say that our hero Chev Chelios (Jason Statham), riddled with horrible poison, reached a fate that few aside from Bugs Bunny could survive. But that's not stopping writer-directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor from kick-starting that sequel.

According to Empire, this will be a "true" sequel; no dream sequences or long-lost twin brothers will be employed to ignore the first film's freaky finale. Here's what Mr. Neveldine told Empire: "We came up with an idea, we wrote the script, and after the studio read it they couldn't believe that we pulled it off. And of course, the best test was giving it to Jason and Jason turned down every other project so he could do this, start this in the spring of next year. He was so excited, he couldn't believe it!"

Needless to say, Crank 2 will deliver even more high-end movie mayhem: "You have to go twice as hard. So that's what we're going to do. If we're going to live up to the first one with the sequel -- we're taking it WAY past the point of the first one." Production on the second Crank looks to be scheduled for next April. No word yet on if Amy Smart or Dwight Yoakam will be returning, but really ... why wouldn't they?

Warner Home Video Wants Another 'Raw Feed' Trilogy

You've probably seen them littering the DVD shelves by now: The first three releases from Warner Home Video's "Raw Feed" slate. Basically a bunch of low-budget, high-return horror titles that'd never make a multiplex nickel but apparently sell like gore-coated hotcakes on the video market. The first one was called Rest Stop, and the follow-ups were Sublime and Believers. Watchable, forgettable genre churnings all the way, but according to Variety, we can now get ready for another batch.

Next up from Raw Feed will be a comedy-horror flick called Otis, which stars the likes of Daniel Stern, Illeana Douglas and Kevin Pollak. Production on that one begins next week. After that we can look forward to something called Supermarket ... and then the inevitable arrival of Rest Stop 2. Each of the films will be produced / directed by the team of Tony Krantz, John Shiban and Blair Witch co-creator Daniel Myrick.

Here's hoping the next batch is just a little bit better than the first one. I've seen Rest Stop, Sublime and Believers, and while none of 'em are rotten ... let's just say there's some room for improvement and then simply sit back and wait for the new horror flicks.

If 'Star Wars' Met 'The Simpsons'

For those that have already seen this, you could probably disregard, but I caught this for the first time yesterday and thought it was worthy of your attention. With the Toronto International Film Festival in full swing (have you checked out our coverage yet?), movie news is pretty scarce. So, this gives us time to point you toward a few fun little nuggets hanging around on the internets. Have you ever wondered what it would look like if the opening to The Simpsons was changed to include Star Wars characters, and was set inside the Star Wars universe? Well, that's exactly what I've posted above -- a re-creation of The Simpsons opening, with folks like a young Luke Skywalker (as Bart), Darth Vader (as Homer), Obi-Wan, C-3P0, Han Solo, Chewbacca and R2D2 (as Marge and Maggie, although Ned Flanders makes a cameo as Solo and that Chewbacca looks very much like Barney). The video was created by a guy named Rich Cando, and if you're a fan of either, it's a pretty fun watch.

In related news, will Bart tease a Simpsons Movie sequel in the opening episode of the show's 19th season later this month? Apparently, during that oh-so-classic opening (as mocked in the above video) Bart will scribble "I will not wait 20 years to make another movie" on the blackboard. However, as the NY Post points out, don't go holding your breath thinking those Simpsons freaks are already knee-deep in planning a second installment. According to exec producer Al Jean, "We would only do a sequel if we believed it was a movie that had to be made, just like we did with the first one. We wouldn't want to do it just because the first one was successful, or because we wanted to make money off of a movie. We'd only do it if we had a script that we thought was great [and] there's no script at this point."

Director Named for the 'Descent' Sequel

When I say "that sequel to The Descent is still going to happen," you first reaction might be an audible groan and an eye-roll. (Or perhaps you just don't care.) But there's some promising news on the horizon regarding the "babes in a cave" follow-up: No, Neil Marshall won't be returning to direct the sequel -- but he will be on board as a writer / producer. Plus he's just given a big stamp of approval on the director for The Descent 2.

According to Fangoria, film editor Jon Harris will make his directorial debut on the slimy spelunking sequel. Here's what the director of Dog Soldiers (and the impending Doomsday) told Fango: "I will not be directing The Descent 2 ... But I will be overseeing every aspect of the production. There's nothing to oversee yet, though, as the script is currently being written. My Descent editor Jon Harris will make his feature directing debut with the sequel, and I can't think of a better man for the job."

So far so good, right? Best of luck to Mr. Harris on the promotion. He's got a tough act to follow with this sequel. (In addition to The Descent, Harris cut films such as Snatch, Layer Cake, Ripley's Game and Stardust.)

Is Universal Planning a Fourth 'Fast and Furious' Flick?

Even though The Fast and the Furious films are not exactly classics of American cinema, apparently there's still some money to be made from the series -- so we probably should have seen this coming. Edmunds, a car enthusiast web site, is reporting that pre-production has begun on what could be the fourth film in the Furious franchise. Sources that have worked on the first three films told Edmunds that the fourth installment is "in development at Universal." So far there has yet to be any mention of a writer or director for the project, (previous directors in the series include Justin Lin and John Singleton) but it's not like it really matters. These films have never been about plot development and character study; all you really need is a crack team of stunt drivers.

Another film seemed inevitable after the not-so-subtle cameo by Vin Diesel at the end of Tokyo Drift (the third film in the series). According to Edmunds sources, the script will be reuniting characters from the first three films, including Paul Walker and Tyrese Gibson. But it's not about the actors, it's all about the cars. Edmunds reports that there could be a reappearance of the 1970 Dodge Charger from the first film, as well as mention of a 1987 Buick GNX being included in the fun. Since my car knowledge is limited to what I've picked up from video games, I'll take their word for it that watching a Buick in action is something to look forward to. According to Edmunds, Universal is planning on a Summer 2008 release, but there has been no official word from the studio on the project. So stay tuned for any updates that come our way.

Harold and Kumar Go to YouTube with a New Trailer!

Guess who's back? That's right, Harold and Kumar are gearing up for another wild adventure -- except this time "they're running from the joint." The first teaser trailer for Harold and Kumar 2 (which, at one point, was called Harold and Kumar Go to Amsterdam) has arrived on YouTube (you know what that means -- catch it while you can), and based on what we see, it appears we're in store for a lot more of the same goofy humor that made the original Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle an instant cult classic.

Basically, Harold and Kumar attempt to get on a plane and go to Amsterdam, except some old lady freaks out and thinks Kumar's a terrorist. So, from there, they show us Rob Corddry behind a piece of interrogation glass cracking some joke about North Korea and Al Qaeda working together. Perhaps the greatest part of the entire teaser (and those fans of the original probably know where I'm heading with this) is the re-introduction of Neil Patrick Harris ... as himself. Yup, before the teaser cuts out, there's Harris -- behind the wheel of a car -- looking all coked up and out of his mind, as per usual. I wouldn't go touting this as a must-see comedy; I think the Harold and Kumar shtick is geared toward a particular audience (ahem, stoners), and I wouldn't expect any ground-breaking comedic moments. But the boys have their fans, and those fans will definitely be interested in seeing them up on the big screen one more time. Me? I'll be waiting for DVD ... for obvious reasons.

A Whole Bunch of Familiar Faces Sign On for ... 'Alone in the Dark 2'

I can't imagine what it would take for an actor to sign up for something called Alone in the Dark 2. (Maybe they never saw the the original Uwe Boll flick.) I guess it makes for an easy enough paycheck, considering that the project is presently lensing in California and the actors can probably show up to shoot their parts over the course of four lazy days. But sign they did, and most of the cast members will be extremely familiar to anyone who's got a masters degree in modern horror cinema.

According to Bloody-Disgusting.com, here's who you'll find milling around in Alone in the Dark 2 -- which, for the record, is not being directed by Uwe Boll: Lance Henriksen (Bishop from Aliens), Rick Yune (evil henchman from Die Another Day), Dee Wallace (mom from E.T.), Ralf Moeller (Thorak from The Scorpion King), Bill Moseley (freaky dude from Rob Zombie's flicks), Danny Trejo (awesome Latino bad-ass from dozens of movies), Michael Pare (Eddie from Eddie and the Cruisers 2: Eddie Lives!), and the adorable newcomer Rachel Specter. The IMDb indicates that Jason Connery (yes, his son) is also in the AITD2 cast.

Although Mr. Boll is still involved as a producer, Alone 2 will be directed by the writing team of Mike Roesch and Pete Scheerer. They wrote the original Alone in the Dark -- and apparently that was enough to earn them this promotion. (They also penned the atrocious House of the Dead 2, so apparently they're the go-to guys for Uwe Boll sequels. How's that for a reliable gig?!?!) All snark aside, I wish Roesch and Scheerer the best of luck. They're already getting off on the right foot by NOT hiring Tara Reid -- plus they're in a sweet little comfort zone with this project: No matter how awful it might be, there's no way the sequel could be worse than the original. (And speaking of the outlandishly silly Alone in the Dark, be sure to get your director's cut on DVD later this month!) (Yeah, right.)
