'Sex and the City 2' Spoilers Reveal a Whole Different World?
Filed under: Comedy », Drama », Romance », RumorMonger »
When Sex and the City was on television, they tried to balance opulence with frugal flavah. Charlotte was buying a share in the Hamptons, but it meant that she couldn't buy shoes from the likes of James Urbaniak. Samantha had a great job, but still had to shop around for a home she could afford. Miranda had to move to Brooklyn to buy enough space for her family. And Carrie, she had all sorts of financial woes from credit cards cut in front of her to almost losing her apartment when the building went co-op. But when they hit the big screen, all fiscal responsibility flew out the window. On the cusp of the economic collapse, the Sex and the City ladies were reveling in lavish lifestyles, spending thousands on this or that, not seeming to have a money-related care in the world. But with tighter times, it looks like the sequel might be going overboard in the other direction.

Penélope Cruz is Stopping by 'Sex and the City 2' & One Jerk Returns

Whipping up a sequel to a big box office hit means amping up the wow factor, and it looks like Sex and the City 2 is going cameo crazy. We already heard about Liza Minelli being part of the rumored wedding (her involvement in the film has since been confirmed), that Barbra Streisand might pop by, and now it looks like Penélope Cruz is going to get inappropriate with Mr. Big.People reports that the actress is popping up in a scene where she wears "a sexy backless black dress" and "gets a little too close to Mr. Big." But she's not just a sexy passerby -- sources say she's playing a banker. Super-sexy garb and snuggling aren't the usual bankerly actions, but the entire context of her scene is missing, so I'm not about to guess.
Meanwhile, Ms. Minelli was filming for three days, and sung "Every Time I Say Goodbye" for the crew. But perhaps the biggest news is that Jason Lewis is also appearing. SatC fans know Mr. Lewis is otherwise known as Smith Jerrod -- Samantha's ex who went from super-sweet boyfriend who stuck by her during cancer to plastic-like Hollywood star who was a cold ass, to put it bluntly. This could make the Samantha Jones rumors be true, or just be something to throw us off. Me, I'm hoping she kicks his butt to the curb. Same with Big and the inappropriate banker. The men-being-jerks scenario has been played to death.
Is 'Sex and the City 2' Planning a Big Gay Wedding?
Filed under: Comedy », Romance », RumorMonger », Remakes and Sequels »
When you're taking a series with a bunch of seasons, a never-ending parade of side characters and romances, and a central cast of four women and their significant others, lots of things get cut, like solid big-screen time for Stanford (Willie Garson) and Anthony (Mario Cantone). While the first film threw them a few brief bones (sorry for the pun), it looks like Sex and the City 2 is cooking up more, if the latest rumors are to be believed. And this is where I tell you to stop reading if you don't want spoilers. (Although really -- if you got this far and are trying to stay spoiler free, you're doing a crappy job of reading headlines.)Anyway... Just Jared reports that In Touch has some spiffy source that reveals big things for Anthony and Stanford in the sequel currently filming. While there have been some potentially spoilerish pictures of Kim Cattrall in a wedding dress, sources say that was just a ruse. (Thank god ... would they really bring Smith back after the great sushi fiasco of Part One?) Rumor has it that the happy new man couple are tying the knot -- with the creme de la creme of officiants: Liza Minelli. "Producers are planning the ultimate gay wedding. They already signed Liza and now they're in secret talks with Barbra Streisand about being a wedding guest!"
Then, if this sequel works well, they can marry off the last of them, dear, single Samantha, and be done with it all.

We already know that Sex and the City 2 is going to do its best to reign in the extreme spending and lavish ways ... and quite possibly get hard-hit by the bad economy. But they didn't have to go back to the '80s in all of its fashion terror! Now that Sex and the City 2 is a few days into production, eager cameras are shooting up a storm on New York streets. There's Big and Carrie having a laugh and chatting over a car, Sarah Jessica Parker getting pointy, video from the set, one dress that's a little too clingy and see-through, and the little beauty over to the right, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly. You know, SJP was pretty popular in the '80s, having been part of Footloose and Girls Just Want to Have Fun, and she never, ever looked this bad. One can only assume that after the buzz around the first flick's possible trip back to the '80s, they decided to go for it in #2.
Then again, it could be a faux scene to fool us. But I thought the same thing of that god-awful, eye-searing, atrocious, joke of a wedding dress that Carrie donned in the first film, so I bet this is no joke.
Not too much about the plot is being officially revealed, but we should learn more soon. The film will hit screens on May 28, 2010.
Manly Casting Bites: A Huston God and Mr. Big

Fie Louis Leterrier, and all of the people behind the Clash of the Titans remake! I have to admit, Liam Neeson as Zeus and Ralph Fiennes as Hades tempted my curiosity, and now I can't help but see it. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Danny Huston is the next man of the Titans, and he will play Poseidon -- God of the Sea. Leterrier only knows how much this will mean for the actor, since this so-called remake is switching up the story left, right, and center. Maybe this time around, we'll see the old guy get sexy with Medusa. Whatever the case, this is one more big flick for Huston, and maybe one day we'll get some solid starring work, and a North American release for Fade to Black while we're at it. (What's Fade to Black? Why, it's the film where he stars as Orson Welles. A project that also boasts Paz Vega, Christopher Walken, and Diego Luna.)Meanwhile, Mr. Big isn't ready to say no to more Sex. Variety reports that Chris Noth has finally committed to Sex and the City 2. He might have taken a while to agree, but this news isn't exactly surprising. You might, however, be surprised by this little nibblet: The deal was for SEVEN figures. Talk about being a lucrative co-star. The sequel starts production in September, and is set for a May 28, 2010 release.
Hey, Big Spender! Can 'Sex and the City' Survive Without Overindulgence?

Those Sex and the City girls weren't always rich. They may have always indulged in the finer things in life, but there was always a frugality to balance it. Charlotte gave up shoes to save for a share in the Hamptons. Carrie spent all her money on Manolos and almost lost her apartment because of it. Then the movie came, along with successful husbands and Hollywood money, and it all went to diamonds, caviar, and extreme extravagance. But just as the economy crashed, so shall our New York-lovin' ladies. MSNBC insider sources recently shared that everyone is feeling the crunch on the upcoming sequel Sex and the City 2. Some of Samantha's investments get wiped out and she'll have to "survive on a more modest budget but still staying true to her fabulous taste." But these hard times won't only hurt the women. As The Age explains, Big gets hit hard, and the couple move to London, where he might do something really crappy ... and swiftly annoy all those who've been watching over the years, once again making sequels futile. There's always something else around the bend.
These reports aren't confirmed, but I think they're a good example of what could very easily kill this franchise. Some love this world, and some hate it, but will those SatC fans feel the love when Samantha "suffers" as she can no longer close stores for her convenience and drop thousands of dollars on shopping sprees? Or jewelry that costs more than a car? At least with overindulgence, viewers can pretend they're that lucky too.
But does anyone want to watch people mope when they have to downsize their multi-million dollar lifestyles in such a way that still seems lucky and lavish to the rest of us? I don't.
Fan Rant: No Shopping on Cinema Screens!

My first thought upon reading that? Gold lame gowns and the Marx Brothers. While I've tried in vain to find if a Marx Brothers film actually features the delectable costume I'm thinking of (if it does exist, it has to be in Animal Crackers or The Cocoanuts), the point is a historical one. The Great Depression was the era of the screwball comedy, and the majority of them took place among the creme de la creme of society. There's jewels and fabulous gowns galore, piles of money, and champagne being chugged by the gallons. The Carole Lombard and Claudette Colbert heiresses are arguably ill-timed anthropological artifacts, but people couldn't get enough of them -- and this was during years when people were starving to death, when theaters handed out bread along with tickets. But people lost themselves in tales of the rich falling in and out of love, and undoubtedly loved the sheer glamour portrayed onscreen.
Dear 'Sex and the City 2' - Please Don't Suck This Time Around

Dear Sex and the City 2,
I am writing this letter to you as a defeated fan. I might not have entered the Sex and the City universe until 2001, when a random e-mail buddy convinced me to watch and ignore my disinterest in fashion-centric fare, but I was converted quickly. Intermingled with the Manolo monologues and ridiculous fashion was a show with smarts. In all its ridiculousness and sometimes over-the-top fervor, were strong and defiant women.
The show offered professional, successful women who weren't one dimensional fiends salivating over husbands and baby making (even Charlotte had her depth), who had strong friendships free of catty, hair-pulling behavior, an openness to diversity and spanky, alternative lifestyles, and refreshing attitudes and conversations about sexuality and sex.
And then came the movie.
Here Comes That Inevitable 'Sex and the City' Sequel

I remember, during an advance screening of The Promotion, I was standing in the movie theater and there were women everywhere. This was about a week or so after Sex and the City came out -- and it was right smack in the middle of the week -- but there were still tons of women, all done up and what not. I joked to my friend that this "tons of nice looking women standing in a movie theater lobby in the middle of a random weekday without any men" was kinda similar to a lunar eclipse, in that it rarely happens. If I were a dating councelor, I'd have recommended my male clients to get the hell over to a Sex and the City screening pronto. Luckily, single men will most likely have another opportunity to mingle with the SATC crowd over a tub of popcorn and a sexy Dr. Pepper as Entertainment Weekly reports a sequel to Sex and the City is already in development and is apparently being fast-tracked by Warner Brothers (New Line put out the first flick). Michael Lombardo, president of HBO's programming group, told folks during a press tour that "there's a lot of energy behind doing another SATC movie." However, one inside source claims Sarah Jessica Parker and her lady friends are a little hesitant because they don't want to rush into things and disappoint fans. Assuming they add another villain to the mix so that it's not just Spacey's Lex Luthor, I'm sure everything will be fine. Oh wait, wrong franchise.
So who wants another Sex and the City movie?
'Sex' Sequel Imminent, But Maybe Not Copycats

Even before Sex and the City proved a hit of modest blockbuster proportions, women, such as our own Kim Voynar, were asking whether the film's popularity could lead to more female-targeted fare from Hollywood. Not necessarily "chick flicks," which we already see every now and then in the form of stale romantic comedies (like Made of Honor) and other small movies involving a female protagonist -- but big, smart, well-funded movies that appeal primarily to the ladies. You know, as in the female equivalent to comic book and action movies like Iron Man and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (yes, I know many women were fans of both these "guy" flicks). Well, according to a piece in Variety asking the same question, women can at least look forward to Sex and the City 2. That's good enough, right?Apparently New Line is already at work on the Sex sequel, but studio execs are predictably responding to the success of Carrie and Co. as a fluke. Warner Bros. head Alan Horn, who jokingly told Variety that the sequel will be titled Sex in the Suburbs, said last weekend's Sex opening was "unusually big" and claims similar projects wouldn't do as well. In a way, he's right, pointing to the fact that Sex had a built-in audience, being based on a hit TV series. Meanwhile, Universal's Donna Langley, also acknowledging that Sex is "outside the norm," at least says it's something to aspire to. Her studio also has a female-targeted movie coming out this summer: Mamma Mia!. But again, that, as well as this summer's The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, has a built-in audience.
