Trailer Park: Beyond the Ninth Surrogate Home for Bruno
Filed under: Action », Animation », Comedy », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Trailer Trash »

Surrogates
Bruce Willis stars in this futuristic science fiction flick based on a graphic novel. Surrogates are remotely controlled robots through which everyone lives there lives. Regardless of what damage is inflicted on the surrogate, the operator remains safe in his or her home. At least that has been the case, but now it seems someone is actually killing people through their surrogates and Willis plays the police detective on the case. Looking forward to this one when it hits on September 25.
Sherlock Holmes
I've never had much more than a passing interest Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous character, but this trailer has got me on the bandwagon. Robert Downey Jr as Holmes? Way cool. Jude Law as Watson? Awesome. Am I reading too much into it or are they trying to make it look like there's some kind of sexual tension between the two? Either way, this looks film will be director Guy Ritchie's Christmas present to the world when it releases on December 25.
9
Not to be confused with another forthcoming film called Nine, this is the second trailer for an amazing looking animated feature about small man-made creatures apparently made of burlap fighting off killer robots in a post apocalyptic world. It comes out on September 9.
Bruno
There's a new trailer for Sacha Baron Cohen's followup to Borat. Bruno is a flamboyantly gay fashionista and as with Borat this film documents his adventures with people who don't realize Cohen is playing a character. This looks really funny and it will be out on July 10.
Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the WTF Trailer

You'll never hear me say a nasty thing about Robert Downey Jr., as I have a lot of respect for the man and a lot of appreciation for the films he's done ... but having said that, I cannot help but express the following opinion: The trailer for his new movie looks like, well, like no Sherlock Holmes story I've ever seen. Obviously one can never judge an unfinished film by the quality of its promotional materials, but if this clip is what we can expect from the whole of Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes, I'm ... well, I'm still interested. But now highly skeptical. And a little shocked.I guess my main question is this: If your goal is to make a Victorian-era action comedy, and that sounds good to me, why must it be called Sherlock Holmes? (I'd suggest Sherlock Holmes and the Deluge of Weird Changes.) I'll leave it to the experts to pick the specific nits, but I'm betting the original Arthur Conan Doyle stories didn't have quite so many gunfights, boxing matches, explosions, and crotch jokes. At this point the thing looks like Young Sherlock Holmes meets The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen vs. Van Helsing: At World's End ... which, I'll admit, could still be a lot of fun.
New Photos From Guy Ritchie's 'Sherlock Holmes'

We also learn that Holmes is a man who often forgets his gun -- and who wears a snappy fedora. Even though there's been a lot of silly emotion surrounding the deerstalker, the story of the hat is pretty cool. It was hand-picked by Downey Jr. from the Lock and Co hat shop, something Ritchie encouraged. "I wanted something more aesthetically pleasing and plausible and more rewarding to look at. I quite like deerstalkers, but there is only one person in history who ever wore one. [This fedora] is sort of authentic to the era, and Robert was very passionate about it." The bum bag (we'll avoid the non-UK friendly description) is for his detective gear.
The first trailer will be attached to Terminator: Salvation. Will we all start drooling like they did after ShoWest? I hope so. I really want this film to meet my expectations.
ShoWest in 60 Seconds: 'Sherlock Holmes', 'Tron in 3D' and More!

Sherlock Holmes -- The trailer premiered at ShoWest, and everyone agrees that Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes is not the pipe-smoker of old. Slashfilm was surprised at how comical the footage was: "It felt a little like the humor of Disney's Pirates of the Carribbean films. Fans of Ritchie might be interested to know that the director's stylish cinematography was definitely intact. During a sequence showing the barenuckle pitfight, Holmes' punches are executed in a slow motion style reminiscent of the video game Fight Night. And while the film isn't set in modern day, the trailer had a very contemporary in-you-face edit."
Latino Review has a blow-by-blow of the trailer, and concludes that it "looks to be a cool mix of action and humor. Sometimes the dialogue was hard to understand because every actor seemed to have a different English accent." No one has a negative thing to say about it, except regarding Robert Downey Jr.'s iffy British accent. (Hey, anyone who saw Restoration should have seen that coming.)
Terminator Salvation -- There wasn't any new footage presented, except Slashfilm notes that Linda Hamilton does appear in the film as ... a photograph held by Kyle Reese. Nice bit of continuity, but nowhere near a cameo yet.
Tron 2 -- The film is officially retitled Tron and the ComicCon footage made another appearance -- but this time in 3-D. Collider freaked over it. "This was my first time seeing the Tron footage and it absolutely blew me away. If you're a fan of the original Tron, this sequel looks so amazing you are going to freak out when you see it in 3-D. Seriously. It will rock your world. This was easily the best thing I saw at the convention and I don't know what else is going to come close." Principal photography begins on the film in a few weeks.
ShoWest: Posters for 'New Moon', 'Sherlock Holmes' and More!
Filed under: Fandom », Exhibition », Movie Marketing », Images », Posters »

A whole bunch of new movie posters have been unveiled as part of this year's ShoWest conference and convention in Las Vegas, which runs through Thursday. ShoWest is like a trade show for film exhibitors who use this as a way to communicate with studios and the MPAA -- sort of like a 'State of the Union' for all parties involved. Apart from theater-related panels (future of 3D, etc) and a massive convention floor, studios arrive to promote some of their upcoming films, as well as screen entire movies. This year the films being screened in their entirety include The Soloist, The Proposal, Whatever Works and Battle for Terra, among others.
As you can see above, ShoWest is also a place to debut brand new movie posters, and Coming Soon has up a gallery of several -- including Sherlock Holmes, New Moon, Star Trek character shots, Sorority Row, 500 Days of Summer, The Hurt Locker, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and a few others. We highlighted the two we thought you'd be most interested in, but also feel free to hop over to CS' gallery for larger looks at all the new posters. We'll report back if anything sensational happens in Vegas a little later in the week.
'Green Lantern', 'Sherlock', 'Potter Finale' Nab Release Dates

Warner Brothers has made an interesting move with regards to The Green Lantern (which Casino Royale's Martin Campbell is rumored to be directing) as they've announced a December 17, 2010 release date for the superhero flick. No, this isn't the Green Hornet (which we wrote about earlier telling you of Michel Gondry's involvement) -- this is the other green hero, Green Lantern. It'll be interesting to see how well a superhero movie does during the winter months [cough] Spirit [cough], and while this one is kinda flying under the radar, I'm a fan of Green Lantern and I'm real curious to see what they do with it.In other Warner Bros. release date news, they seem to have pushed Sherlock Holmes (starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law) to a December 25, 2009 release -- making this the studio's big Christmas Day movie. The film was previously supposed to open on November 13. Additionally, the final Harry Potter film (part 2 of the Deathly Hallows)has scheduled a release date of July 15, 2011. And guess what else is opening that weekend -- um, just a little flick called The Avengers. Could you imagine Potter squaring off against Marvel's Avengers? How cool would that box office battle be?
Other release dates announced by Warners:
Jonah Hex - August 6, 2010
Christopher Nolan's Inception - July 16, 2010
Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch- October 8, 2010
Clash of the Titans - March 26th, 2010
Which of these projects brings you the most excitement?

Watch This: Academy Awards 2009 Movie Preview

The first thing I noticed the morning after the Oscars was that a lot of people were searching for images of Marisa Tomei as a stripper. Guess it's good folks took something away from last night's ceremony. For those of you who didn't make it to the end credits or simply changed the channel as soon as Slumdog Millionaire was announced the winner of Best Picture, the Oscars did a little something different this year. Instead of showing us a recap of the night while the credits scrolled, they aired brief snippets of video from some of 2009's hottest and most anticipated films.
The Academy rules were that these clips be brand new, and while there was no dialogue, folks enjoyed their first looks at movies like Sherlock Holmes , Funny People , The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 , Public Enemies , Julie & Julia , The Soloist , Up , Fame , Terminator Salvation , (500) Days of Summer , Amelia , Whatever Works , Inglourious Basterds , Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian , Monsters vs. Aliens , Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince , Angels & Demons , Old Dogs , Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs , The Boat That Rocked , An Education , State of Play , Imagine That and G-Force.
Check out the video below and let us know which flick you think looks the best.
New 'Sherlock Holmes' Photos

In fact, if it's more McAdams you crave, look below the jump. The Bad and the Ugly uncovered several photographs of her on set in the most gorgeous pink gown, and I've put one below. The costume nerd in me is really anxious to see what lush Victorian pieces they outfit everyone in, particularly after that first glimpse of Robert Downey Jr. caused such a "He's too rumpled!" outcry. (Didn't it turn out he was in disguise? Or is that what we just decided was the explanation for that Bohemian look?)
The USA Today photo has been added to our baby Holmes gallery. Now that filming has commenced, how long until we get a trailer? Official stills are cool and all, but I'm dying to see some of what Erik Davis has been talking about -- and whether or not the much maligned Ritchie can pull off something completely new.
Discuss: The Geek Movies of 2009

2009 has begun on a rather tense note for geekdom as Watchmen became further embroiled in legal soup. As Fox pushes for a delay, we must contemplate a rather thin year of geeky offerings .... which just shows how spoiled we've become. Watchmen and Wolverine alone would have made our year before the wonder that was 2008, when we had Bruce Wayne, Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, and the Punisher. But hey, this is going to be the Year of Announcements -- we're going to find out who Captain America and Thor are, who or what Iron Man must face in his sequel, and hey, we might even find out whether Edward Norton will reprise his role as the Hulk. We're going to have fun, no matter what happens with Watchmen.
January
Nothing. Watch The Dark Knight ten more times, I guess (especially when it returns to conventional and IMAX theaters on January 23). Or read a graphic novel; you must have gotten some for Christmas? Anyway, take a breather. You're still recovering from 2008.
February
Neil Gaiman's Coraline, and a limited release of the long-delayed Fanboys both come out on February 6th. Gaiman for the win, no question.
March
Watchmen Watchmen Watchmen Watchmen Watchmen Watchmen Watchmen. The film is still scheduled to arrive in theaters on March 6th, however Warner Brothers and 20th Century Fox are still fighting in court over who actually owns the rights to the property. If a judge rules in favor of Fox on January 20th or before, we may not get Watchmen on time ... but we will get a whole bunch of angry fans. Read more about it on our Watchmen page.
April
Dragonball Evolution hits theaters on the 8th. The excitement is palatable.
May
This is the month of geekdom, kicking off with the film my year centers around, X-Men Origins: Wolverine on May 1. If this isn't good, the Geek Beat will burn with the fury of a thousand suns the following Tuesday. May that be your warning, Fox.
A little independent film you might have heard of also comes out this month: Star Trek hits theaters on May 8th.
Homeless Guy Chosen for 'Sherlock Holmes' Role
Filed under: Casting », Mystery & Suspense »
We've all heard the stories -- some scout happened into some mall or cafe, saw a stunning girl, and suddenly she became a famous supermodel or actress, rocketed to superstardom. But have no fear -- it's not only for the young lookers these days. The Mirror reports that a homeless man in the UK nabbed a part in Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes.Raymond Emanuel had been taking care of his ill mother, and when the money ran out, he found himself on the streets. Seven months later, a talent scout saw him leave a movie theater he'd gone into to warm up, and immediately offered him a role in the film. He was on set the next day as an MP in the House of Commons (you'll be able to see him on the front bench when the film comes out). While it wasn't a big money payoff for the man (just £20 for the costume fitting and £75 for acting), he's already found a new flat in Longsight and his agent is looking for more work.
In the neverending torrent of bad-economy news, it's nice to see at least one success story. Best of luck, Mr. Emanuel!
