California 'Signal' Screening Interrupted By Multiple Stabbings

Filed under: Horror », Magnolia », Exhibition »

"Do you have the crazy?" is one of the tag-lines for the Magnolia-released indie horror flick The Signal. And it sure seems like one Orange County theater-goer had a small dose of the crazy when he (somewhat randomly) stabbed two people -- and he didn't even wait for the movie to end!

According to MSNBC, "one man suffered a stab wound to the arm, which punctured into his chest and was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange. The other man was also stabbed in the arm ... Both are expected to survive ... The attacker, who is believed to have been kicked out of the theater earlier, escaped." The story also involves a mysterious bag of "illegal substances," so let's not get all knee-jerk and blame the movie for the violence.

Seems that the stabber got away, but police are following up on a few leads. I was going to get in touch with one of the Signal-makers and ask them for a reaction, but that seemed a little silly. Does anyone want people getting STABBED while their movie plays? I think not.

Screamfest '07 is Here!

You thought that with all the love we've been throwing at Austin's Fantastic Fest we'd probably forget all about good ol' L.A. Screamfest. Not with me on horror watch! The event runs from October 12 to 20, and if you happen to be located anywhere near the legendary Mann's Chinese Theater -- you just might want to duck inside to see what sort of murderous mayhem is going on.

And the Screamfest looks to be starting off on the right foot this year: Last night's opening night film was George A. Romero's Diary of the Dead! After much praise from the audiences at Toronto and Fantastic Fest, the master's latest zombie opus will hit the west coast with much excitement and gore. And the fun doesn't stop there. The festival will also offer Robert Rodriguez's director's cut of Planet Terror (which is awesome) and a 25th Anniversary screening (and cast reunion) of Friday the 13th Part 3. Yes, in 3-D!

Attendees will also get to check out the long-awaited DVDquel Return to House on Haunted Hill, a screening of the great-looking 30 Days of Night (and the video prequels Blood Trails), David Arquette's festival fave The Tripper, and a variety of genre titles of various shapes, sizes and nationalities. Of the Screamfest flicks we've seen, we've already given a strong seal of approval on the quiet but creepy Alone, the robust zest of Wrong Turn 2, the Pakistani lunacy known as Hell's Ground, , the freakishly ferocious Inside, and the apocalyptic awesomeness that is The Signal. Plus I keep hearing that Shrooms is pretty amusing, Buried Alive is gruesome, and Storm Warning is really solid.

Signal Trailer Infects FearNet!

Shameless horror junkie that I am, I left the 2007 Sundance Film Festival with two new genre favorites stuck right in my back pocket: Mitchell Lichtenstein's much-discussed Teeth and the Atlanta-born multi-director sci-fi horror apocalypse tale The Signal. It didn't take very long for a hungry distributor (in this case Magnolia Pictures) to come along and drop some coin on the nifty little flick, and now (courtesy of FearNet.com) we get our first "official" trailer for The Signal -- although it's really more of a teaser. (There was a promotional trailer up at the Shoreline Entertainment website a few weeks back, but I suppose this new one eliminates the need for that one. Oh well.)

No word yet on when Magnolia will be unleashing The Signal, but those guys already have The Host and Severance next in line. (Like I said a few months back, it feels to me like Magnolia's looking to become the next Lionsgate, and I think they're doing a damn fine job with these foreign and indie pick-ups!) For those who don't have the time to read my stunningly insightful review of The Signal, I'll sum up the plot in only a few isolated words: electronic, infection, murder, mayhem, madness. There. At this point you're either in or you're out. More info on The Signal's release when it becomes available.

All the Movies That Got Bought at Sundance!

Filed under: Deals », Sundance », Cinematical Indie »

To most movie fans, Sundance is this far-off and distant place they can't visit because, well, it's a pretty damn expensive trip -- and who the heck wants to spend a week on a mountain in January and not ski? The second question I'm always asked upon my return home from Sundance (after "What good movies did you see?") is "What famous people did you meet?" But the third question is usually something like "So when will I actually get to see these movies that everyone's been chattering about for the last two weeks?" And so I decided to collect all the acquisition news from this past festival and offer it all up on one convenient platter. I'll keep the chatter to a minimum, but if you want more info on a particular film, please do partake of all the links below.

Thanks to Variety, Movie City News, THR's RiskyBiz Blog, and our own Cine-maniacs (particularly Jette and Karina) for all the info. [Have any updates, additions or corrections? Leave 'em in the comments section please!] Added Bonus: After the jump you'll find a list of movies that already had North American distribution set up before they arrived at Sundance!
