Discuss: Do We Buy Nicole Kidman as an Action Star?

Filed under: Action », Casting »

Get ready -- in the wake of an oldie but goodie like Harrison Ford and a young but slick Matt Damon, we're now getting ... Nicole Kidman. The Hollywood Reporter posts that she's going to star in (and produce) a new action adventure called The Eighth Wonder. They're saying practically nothing about the plot, but we do know that it's a globe-spanning race centered on an archaeological discovery. "The goal is to create a movie that will be to Raiders of the Lost Ark what the Bourne movies are to James Bond movies: a character-driven, treasure-hunting thriller." Nicole Kidman. Really? To anchor a big action adventure franchise?

I mean, let's forget her notorious "iffyness" on sticking with certain projects and focus on the theme of this flick. Do any of you really think she'll pull in the audiences as the next action star, or even pull it off in a way to tantalize apprehensive audiences? I would love, love, love to see a kickass woman take the action adventure reins, but her?

Jake Gyllenhaal's Moon Movie Gets a New Writer

It doesn't seem to be easy to get to the moon, even with the Prince of Persia attached for the ride. The Hollywood Reporter has posted that the Jake Gyllenhaal's untitled lunar action movie, that he signed on for last year, is getting another rewrite.

First, Doug Liman (Jumper), who will direct the film, teamed up with John Hamburg (his cousin, and Along Came Polly writer/director) to whip up the story and write the script. Then, the author of Black Hawk Down, Mark Bowden, revamped it. Now, Dan Mazeau has signed on to "bring it in for a landing with a different take 'based on an original story by Liman, Bowden, and Simon Kinberg.'" Apparently something isn't working quite right, although I imagine there has to be something tasty in there somewhere since Gyllenhaal signed on.

What this story covers remains to be seen. All THR says about the plot is that it's an "action film about lunar colonization." IMDb adds a little more, describing it as "An action film centered around one crew's expedition to the moon during a time of frenzied interest in lunar colonization." So, stay tuned for some sort of action-packed, Jake-led, lunar colonization on the big screen, should this rewrite work out.

Jake Gyllenhaal Goes to the Moon

I'm probably one of the biggest Doug Liman supporters -- even if I do get crap for loving Mr. & Mrs. Smith -- so I get excited about every new project announced with his name attached. I'm even looking forward to a new Knight Rider TV movie (possibly pilot) I just read about that Liman will helm for NBC. He says that it will have a tone somewhere between The Bourne Identity and Smith, and will featuring a morphing KITT. Even if I didn't like Liman's work, I'd be curious. Liman also called the original Knight Rider "the Shakespeare of our generation." But I hope he was joking.

According to Variety, the director has another movie on the fast-track at Dreamworks that will star Jake Gyllenhaal. The untitled project (being called "Untitled Moon Project"), will be Liman's first attempt at outer-space science fiction, and its plot will focus on a private expedition to the moon to set up a Lunar colony. As much as I can tell, this will also be Gyllenhaal's first time costumed in a space suit, which should bring him back to his glory days as the Bubble Boy.

Liman co-wrote the original script for the project, along with his cousin, writer-director John Hamburg (Along Came Polly). However, it's now being re-written by author Mark Bowden, who wrote the source material for Black Hawk Down and Joe Carnahan's in-development Pablo Escobar movie, Killing Pablo. Liman, Alli Shearmur and Simon Kinberg will produce the film, which will presumably begin shooting as soon as Gyllenhaal is done with Brothers.

From Jolie to Brewster: The New Mrs. Smith

When I heard that director Doug Liman and screenwriter Simon Kinberg were planning to bring their Mr. & Mrs. Smith to network television, my brain spit out a pair of automatic responses: 1. Hmm, guess that means no sequel any time soon, and 2. I wonder who they'll get to play the roles made famous by the stunningly photogenic pair known as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Well, based on the news that Moviehole.net just dished out, the female half of the equation has been set ... and it's a lovely one indeed.

Panamanian mega-cutie Jordana Brewster has been cast as Mrs. Smith. And if the name and this pic aren't enough to jog your memory, I'm hoping you'll remember the beautiful Ms. Brewster from her work in movies like The Faculty, The Fast and the Furious, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning and (ugh) Annapolis. For those looking for some evidence as to Jordana's skills with quips and/or guns, feel free to give the sunny little indie flick D.E.B.S. a rental. (Not a great film, but a colorfully fun one.)

No word yet on who'll be playing Mrs. Smith's other half when the duo hits the small screen, but I'd be expecting an announcement sooner than later: ABC wants to have the Smith series ready for broadcast this autumn.

Simon Kinberg Explains Why We Didn't Get Gambit in X3

Filed under: Action », Casting », Deals », Fandom », Scripts », Politics », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

Regular readers will know I was greatly disappointed by the severe lack of Gambit in the most recent X-Men movie ... or in any X-Men movie to date, for that matter. This most recent film seemed to pack in mutants at every possible opportunity, including some pretty crazy ones, and still didn't manage to bring me Remy LeBeau. Gambit is not my favorite mutant, but he ranks reasonably high on the list (when he's not busy being Death, anyway). Simon Kinberg, one of the primary script authors for X-Men: The Last Stand recently made some comments explaining why they chose not to bring Gambit on board, and they at least make some sense.

Kinberg basically said "We wrote a cameo for him, and then really felt like it was better to save Gambit and give him a major role in a future X-Men movie, rather than give him a cameo where fans would be saying " ... that's all I get of Gambit?"" And he's correct in this matter, I think. Had they chose to cram him in somewhere without giving him a place on the team I probably would have been just as disappointed as I was by his not existing at all. The question now seems to be... future X-Men movie? I thought we were all pretending the franchise ends here. ...

Green Lantern Trilogy?

Here's a quickie for you DC fans. X-Men movie writer Simon Kinberg has a good relationship with the fans over at the XVerse Community Message Boards. He stops in from time to time to answer questions and discuss his opinions - primarily on his work with X-Men, but really on any subject that's thrown at him. You can swing over there to read his thoughts on the filming of X3; but in the meantime let me fill you in on a very interesting comment he made regarding a Green Lantern movie. In answer to a GL question, Kinberg confirmed that Warner Brothers is actively developing the feature (not secret knowledge by any means), but he went on to indicate that the WB people are so high on the project's potential that they're already discussing trilogy possibilities.

It shouldn't be a surprise; we all know that successful properties are almost immediately considered for enfranchisement, and super hero properties - thanks to their built in fan base and nearly unending well of characters and story lines - seem custom made for sequel potential. However, it is nonetheless pleasing to know that Warner Brothers has an active interest in the project. I've got my fingers crossed for a Hal Jordan lantern myself. Of course, who knows - maybe a trilogy would allow for some crazy Green Lantern Corps action.
