Indie Spotlight: New Releases for August 1
Filed under: Comedy », Documentary », Drama », Foreign Language », Independent », Columns », Cinematical Indie », Indie Spotlight »
It's around this time every summer that the major blockbusters have done their thing and the multiplexes start to feel stale. Another Mummy movie? A Kevin Costner political comedy? Meh and meh. And that's where the Indie Spotlight comes in! We're here every Friday to tell you what's opening beyond the multiplexes, out in the art houses and fringe theaters, to remind you that there are alternatives to the flicks opening on 3,000 screens. This week sees the release of five indie films: America the Beautiful, Frozen River, In Search of a Midnight Kiss, Love and Honor, and Sixty Six. The scoop on each of them is below. If they're not opening where you live, make a note to keep an eye out for 'em later.
Frozen River
What it is: A drama set at the border between Quebec and New York, where a woman helps people immigrate illegally.
What they're saying: The film premiered to wide acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize and where Cinematical's James Rocchi declared it excellent. At Rotten Tomatoes, 81% of the critics agree with Rocchi.
Where it's playing: New York City (Angelika Film Center, Lincoln Plaza Cinemas) and Los Angeles (The Landmark, Laemmle Sunset 5, Town Center 5 in Encino, Playhouse 7 in Pasadena, Edwards Westpark 8 in Irvine).
Official site: Sony Classics.
EXCLUSIVE: 'Sixty Six' Poster Premiere

Now if only my parents made up a poster like this for my Bar Mitzvah, the rest of my adult life probably would've gone in a completely different direction. Cinematical has just received this exclusive poster for Sixty Six (click to enlarge), starring Eddie Marsan, Helena Bonham Carter and Gregg Sulkin. Directed by Paul Weiland, Sixty Six is an adorable little indie from across the pond about a boy who's life gets turned upside down when his Bar Mitzvah just happens to coincide with the classic 1966 World Cup Final between England and West Germany. It was supposed to be the most important event of his life. Unfortunately for him, it clashed with one of the most important events in the history of his country.
Sixty Six already debuted in the UK, but now it's finally making its way to the states and will arrive in theaters on August 1.
Trailer Park: What About The Children?

Yeah, what about the children? I hear this line spoken over and over again -- by comedians, politicians and parents -- but no one ever seems to have an answer. How can we prevent our kids from growing up to be as screwed up as we are? And, are we really that screwed up?
The films this week all involve kids ... though not all of these flicks are geared toward the little ones. (Oh, and before you ask -- yes, I feel most of the soldiers fighting in Iraq are kids too. And if you don't know what I mean by saying that, keep reading.) Welcome to another edition of Cinematical's Trailer Park ...
