Danny Boyle Talks 'Slum Dog Millionaire' as 'Sunshine' Gets a New Spoilerific Trailer

Since I've already seen Danny Boyle's Sunshine (due out in American theaters on July 20), I can safely say that the recently-released extended trailer is chock-full of spoilers. Granted, since you may not know the characters and story (save for the fact that it's about a group of astronauts sent to re-ignite a dying sun), the trailer might not mean much to you. But once you're experiencing the film up on the big screen, you'll soon realize just how much is spoiled in the trailer ... and may be pissed that you ever watched it in the first place. So keep all that in mind before checking this sucker out. Being the huge Boyle fanboy that I am, Sunshine was one of those films I was really looking forward to. Thankfully, I can honestly say that it was well worth the wait; the visuals alone are mind blowing, and the acting (Chris Evans and Cillian Murphy, especially) was pretty darn good too. That being said, this isn't Armageddon 2. Think more along the lines of Solaris or 2001 -- it's a quiet sci-fi flick that works more as a piece of art than anything else. But if you dig Boyle's style and you're in the mood for a little beauty amongst a summer full of fast-food blockbusters, then Sunshine is a must-see.
At the post screening Q&A with Boyle, he mentioned that he was currently shooting a film in Mumbai, India. We already knew that it was called Slum Dog Millionaire, and that it revolved around a guy who goes on the Hindi version of Who Wants to Be A Millionaire. Aside from that, nada. Well Boyle further explained the film to MTV, and has this to say: "It's based on a true story about this kid who goes on the Hindi version of 'Who Wants to be A Millionaire,' which is a very tough show to win, and he wins it. And [because he's illiterate] they think he's cheated. But actually the film shows how he happens to know the answers to the questions that [they] happen to ask." Boyle went on to say that, as with most things, it all has to do with a girl. "The real reason he is on the show is that he has lost contact with the girl he loves. All he knows is that she watches this show religiously, so he decides to go on the show and try and get [her] back."
What's funny about this is that during the Q&A, someone asked Boyle if he'd be interested in shooting in some other genres. One thing he noted was that he did not feel like he could do comedy (or romantic comedy, for that matter), because he's not a very funny person. And here it is his next film is about a guy going out of his way to land a girl. Go figure. When asked about the Slum Dog Millionaire score during our Q&A, Boyle admitted to being a huge fan of The White Stripes, and would love to bring Jack White out to Mumbai to have him play with some of the popular music over there. Now that's a fantastic idea! No word on a release date just yet, but I'd expect Slum Dog Millionaire (written by Full Monty scribe Simon Beaufoy) to hit theaters sometime next year.
Danny Boyle Talks Up 'Slum Dog' Details

Almost all of the films directed by Danny Boyle deal with some kind of get rich scheme. Sometimes, as in Shallow Grave and Millions, the money comes by accident. Other times, like in The Beach and A Life Less Ordinary, they involve failed attempts to illegally make some dough. It's been awhile since I've seen it, so I really can't remember how the robbery in Trainspotting goes, but it's there even if the main deal of that movie is getting high, not rich. As for 28 Days Later, and I'm guessing the upcoming Sunshine, there is no wealth to be had, but Boyle's next film, Slum Dog Millionaire, which has been scripted by The Full Monty writer Simon Beaufoy, will again be dealing with a large sum of money. As we told you a few weeks ago, Boyle is already in pre-production on Slum Dog, which we only knew involves a true story about a boy from the slums of Mumbai who wins big on India's version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. But instead of the boy being really smart, as we had thought, it now turns out the film's protagonist is illiterate and not well-educated. We learn this from Time Out's movie blog, which got a good deal of the plot synopsis out of Boyle for a recent podcast. The director says the film will show how the boy luckily knew all the answers because they all related to experiences in his life. His win was apparently a big shock to the show's producers, who suspected the boy of cheating. The best part of the story, though, is that the boy didn't mean to do so well; he only wanted to go on television in the hopes it would help him find his love, a girl who he'd lost connection with. Sounds like another fairy tale perfectly suited for Boyle.
Danny Boyle Says Next Project Is 'Slum Dog,' Talks 'Trainspotting 2,' Falling Out With McGregor

If you go by what Erik posted earlier this month, Sunshine will be a mess -- there were an inconceivable number of re-writes and really poorly-received test screenings. However, to hear Danny Boyle talk of his film, it's an intense sci-fi adventure. Sure, he's the director and creator, so he has to talk it up. But perhaps this is just another sort of Fountain flick -- many people hate it and boo, while others weep and applaud. In an interview with The Guardian, Boyle gives tons of details about making the film, his process and his future.Instead of making a scientifically-sound plot, the director focused on making his group of actors comfortable with astronaut-like things -- a 747 flight simulator, scuba-diving and an acrobatic plane so they could see zero-G. He's also quite adamant about his casting of Cillian Murphy as a physicist. He compares the cute actor to his scientific adviser, Dr. Brian Cox, and says of the doctor: "[he] is very handsome... And he looks like Cillian." But really, the guy doesn't have to defend his casting much, having picked out talent like Ewan McGregor, Christopher Eccleston and Robert Carlyle. It is, therefore, no surprise that the film doesn't focus on the grand space outside the vessel that is heading for the sun with a nuke the size of Manhattan, but rather the actors confined on the ship. At the very least, the film sounds more linear than The Fountain.
All sci-fied out, Boyle will return to millions and kids next with Slum Dog Millionaire, which is based on a true story about a boy who won the Indian version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, but then faced cheating accusations. He's just returned from a scouting trip in Mumbai, so the film seems to be underway. But what comes after that? it seems that he's looking to work with Hugh Grant in the future, of all people! Not only that, but he's hoping that he can reconcile with Ewan McGregor as well. Years after their falling out, he's still hoping that Ewan will re-warm to the idea of a Trainspotting sequel: "He's one of those guys who can do it, who has got that magic thing that people love. you don't come across it very often." However, he's also waiting for the actors to age: "They look like they're in a spa every weekend rather than a bar. But when age hits them we'll be there, waiting." Sorry, Mr. Boyle, but I'm quite happy with how Jonny Lee Miller looks.
