Evan Rachel Wood to Play Spider-Man's Girlfriend!

Filed under: Action », Music & Musicals », Casting », Deals », RumorMonger », Fandom », Comic/Superhero/Geek »

Don't worry hardcore Spidey fans, Evan Rachel Wood is not replacing Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane, Peter Parker's girlfriend. However, according to the actress herself, she's signed on to play Mary Jane in Spider-Man: The Musical, which begins rehearsals in June, 2009, and will most likely arrive on Broadway before the next big-screen sequel in early 2010.

We've known for awhile now that the musical's director, Julie Taymor, has been championing her Across the Universe stars for the lead roles in the musical. Now that Wood has nabbed the co-lead, will Jim Sturgess play Spidey? According to Wood, who spoke with IESB at a press junket for The Wrestler, they're "still trying to convince him." It's important to note that both Wood and Sturgess have workshopped the musical with Taymor recently, so chances are good both will open the show in New York. Remember, music and lyrics have been provided by U2's Bono and The Edge -- and with two pretty movie stars in the starring roles, this thing could take off. Whaddya think? Will Spidey ruin his superheroic kickass appeal by deciding to belt out a tune or three on Broadway?

Discuss: With Gyllenhaal Out, Who Could Play Spidey?

Filed under: Action », Casting », RumorMonger », Fandom », DIY/Filmmaking », Comic/Superhero/Geek »

Now that Jake Gyllenhaal has officially signed to star in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, that basically means we can take his name off the table with regards to all future comic properties (at least until after Persia comes out, because that may turn into a franchise if the first makes loads of duckets). While we still have no idea whether Tobey Maguire will return to play Spidey in a Spider-Man 4, we do know that Sony is prepping something. They just re-upped their deal for a fourth installment (fact) and they may be looking to get more bang for their buck by shooting two sequels at the same time with a story arc that stretches across both films. However, it all comes down to negotiations -- and if parties (be them studios, actors, writers or directors) can't decide on a fair enough deal, things could potentially fall apart rather quickly and go in a completely different direction.

Here's the question: Has enough time passed for Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst? Do they miss the roles? The characters? How much would it take to get them back? And do we want them back? I think it's pretty clear we all still want Spider-Man in our big-screen lives, even though the third film was what it was. But are Maguire and Dunst still the right actors for the job? Or would some new blood do an old franchise some good?

For awhile, lots of people were looking at Jake Gyllenhaal to replace Maguire if a decision like that had to be made. With Jake G. out of the picture, who else could you see filling Maguire's Spidey tights?

Seven New Clips From 'Spider-Man 3'!

Filed under: Action », Drama », New Releases », Sony », Newsstand », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

The Spider-Man 3 pre-release frenzy continues! As if you don't already know, the latest cinematic installment of the fantastic adventures of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is set to hit theaters on May 4th. As I've said before Spidey fans, I feel your pain. That's a long time to wait. Fortunately, we've had quite a few bits of info and highlights to get pass the time. And now, there's yet another way to help pas the time until you can plunk down your twelve bucks at the local multiplex to see the movie.

Over at IESB, they've posted exclusive clips from the movie for your enjoyment. As they say at the sight these are not trailers, TV spots, featurettes or anything like that. Instead, they've got actual footage and scenes from the film and its all yours for the viewing. Among the clips posted include the beginning of a cool fight between black-suited Spidey and arch-villain Sandman in a subway tunnel, a very impressive clips of Spidey rescuing a falling woman during a crane disaster and a bit of romance between Peter Parker and MJ while sitting in a giant spider web.

I gotta say it. the clips look cool and make me even more eager to see the film when it comes out. With all they hype surrounding a film like this you have to wonder if it will actually be able to live up to fan's expectations. Sometimes, films just are not able to. Fortunately, with what I've seen and heard so far, this one looks like it just might be able to. As I'm a huge Spidey fan, I sure hope it does. What do you guys think? Do things like this make you more or less excited for the film?

Kirsten Dunst: I Sing and Dance in 'Spider-Man 3'

Filed under: Action », Music & Musicals », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Sony », Family Films », Remakes and Sequels »

In case the latest trailer hasn't spoiled enough of Spider-Man 3 for you, Kirsten Dunst supplied SCI FI Wire with some information on what her character is up to as the movie begins. Mary Jane is a successful actress on Broadway, where she sings and dances. And though she didn't specify, I'm guessing that Dunst did her own singing and dancing for the part. The character also apparently wears a necktie throughout most of the movie, though the reason for this is unclear. While Dunst didn't give SCI FI Wire any real plot points, she mentioned that we will get to watch her character deteriorate and get beat down (we can assume she means mentally, not physically). If you dislike her portrayal of MJ as much as I do, this may be something for you to look forward to.

Personally, I can't really look forward to anything relating to Dunst's appearance in the new Spidey movie. But as with any movie she's in that I like (Small Soldiers, Dick, Marie Antoinette, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and many others), I will tolerate her. I just hope that her singing and dancing is a little better than her acting. Maybe if she's talented enough, she can provide her own singing voice for her upcoming role as Blondie front-runner Debbie Harry. Speaking of which, supposedly the casting of Dunst as Harry has upset a lot of Blondie fans, who have been posting complaints on message boards all over the web. I guess I'm not the only one who dislikes Dunst's acting. Fortunately for Dunst, she has an easy reply for all the disappointed: Debbie Harry handpicked her for the part.

Make Your Own Spidey Costume!

I know, I know, I feel your pain, believe me. I can hardly handle waiting the long days until the latest cinematic incarnation of that friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is released to a clamoring world, either. Unfortunately, those are the breaks and we just have to be patient and wait until Spider-Man 3 comes to theaters this summer.

Until then, we've at least had a few glimpses into what the new film would be like. Some pics. A trailer and some video. And now, something that's a little late for Halloween but still, just as exciting -- a video featuring head specialty costumer for Spider-Man 3 Shownee Smith (not to be confused with Saw actress Shawnee Smith). In the video, courtesy of our friends at Comics2Film, Mr. Smith and his pals demonstrate the inner workings and the delicate procedure that goes into making the very cool Spidey suit.

One thing friends, if you do try this at home, please do so responsibly. Nobody needs to get hurt making a costume. If you're worried about the consequences or feel you might get injured, do yourself a favor -- just go buy a Spider-Man costume at Wal-Mart like the rest of the kids and leave the latex molding to the pros. Although, I am tempted to try this -- especially if Vivian Chow will come over and sew it for me. She's kinda cute. Enjoy the video.

Spidey 3 Clips and Posters

Filed under: Action », Fandom », Trailer Trash », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

While I wasn't aware they were doing this, Fox aired a bunch of clips from Spider-Man 3 last night during their showing of Spider-Man 2. Of course, those clips have since popped up on YouTube -- and, conveniently, they've all been smashed together into one long preview of sorts. What do you get? Well, there's certainly a lot of Venom black Spider-Man suit thingy, a bunch of shots from both the real and the leaked Spider-Man 3 trailers, as well as some more from James Franco (aka Harry Osborn) as the Green Goblin, part deux.

If that's not enough to satisfy your thirst for more Spidey, two new teaser posters have also been released. Both show that familiar image of Spidey up against a glass building, his reflection being that of Venom. The other poster (as seen to the right of your screen) reverses that. The good thing about Spidey 3 is that it's arriving in theaters on May 4, which is way better than, say, having to wait until the middle of July for this sucker. Imagine you fanboys faced with a decision to either see Transformers (which debuts on July 4) or Spider-Man 3? Thankfully, you won't even have to go there ... though something tells me Spidey would win that one by a mile.

Sony Reveals Venom!

Filed under: Action », Thrillers », Sony », Fandom », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

Though cool footage and pictures are unlikely to quell fanboy rumblings that Topher Grace is too small to play Eddie Brock/Venom, Sony last night gave ComicCon attendees their first look at Grace as the character. According to a report at JoBlo, footage from Spider-Man 3 was screened and, though "a bit rough in spots" (I'm assuming that means it's unfinished, as opposed to bad), it showed all sorts of cool stuff, from a fight between Spidey and Sandman to MJ caught in Venom's webs. Oh, and it also included the minor event of Brock's transformation in Venom, a scene that, not surprisingly, "[brought] the house down." (That said, what clips at ComicCon don't bring the house down?! People go there primed to love everything -- that's why studios reveal stuff there, for God's sake.)

To coincide with the big reveal, Sony added some Venom wallpaper to their official site for the film. Maybe going and staring at it will make your forget that the movie doesn't come out until next May.

Spidey 3 Teaser! In the Flesh!

Filed under: Drama », Romance », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Fandom », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

Remember the other day, when all we had of the Spider-Man 3 teaser was a shot-by-shot text version created by a neurotic helpful fan? And how silly it felt to be reading a really boring write-up of something we kept being told was awesome and exciting? Well, friends, no more reading for you! The real thing has surfaced online, albeit in fairly crappy quality. Still, it's very easy to see what's going on -- and, not surprisingly, the actually footage is waaaay better than the text version. There's a whole lot of black suit action, many shots of pretty James Franco (who, since he never speaks, manages not to ruin the hope that he might not be awful), and precious little MJ, for the nasty Kirsten Dunst-haters among you.

So, it's your call: If you want to go into a geek coma from the joy of seeing the Spidey 3 teaser AND Superman Returns  for the first time together, do not click this link. If you're like me, however, and hate suspense of any kind, click away, and check it out for yourself. (Do it quickly, though, because it seems likely it won't be up for long.)

Edit: Doh! As of 927am EST, it's down. But don't despair: The teaser is allegedly going to be up at Apple this afternoon (supposedly at 230pm EST), so check there for an actual non-cellphone-recorded look.
