Who Wants to Be a 'Simpsons' Character?

Filed under: Animation », Comedy », Fandom », Home Entertainment », Movie Marketing »

Have you always dreamed of landing a guest spot on The Simpsons? Have you wondered what you would look like as a resident of Springfield? Well, thanks to the glorious thing that is movie marketing, you can now create your own Simpsons character (based on you or someone you know) and show it off to all those people who claim you don't have a lot of time on your hands. Interested? Oh, I know you are. To play, you can either head on over to the official The Simpsons Movie website (where they allow you to create your own avatar -- see me to the right of your screen) or the Burger King Simpsons site (where they allow you to upload a pic of yourself which you can then alter once in Simpsons mode).

I thought I'd like the Burger King site better (since you can use a pre-existing photo of yourself), but the one I created on The Simpsons Movie website came out a tad closer to what I actually look like. Just picture sideburns, a little scruff and bit more roundish physique. That's not to say the Burger King one won't work -- I guess it just depends on the picture you provide (they ask for a close-up shot). In case you've been living under a rock, they've been promoting the hell out of this movie. Earlier this month, a handful of 7-Elevens were converted to Kwik-E-Marts, while a flurry of Simpsons-related products hit shelves in thousands of stores across the country. (I managed to pick up some Buzz Cola, although it was a tad too sweet for my taste). On top of the 7-Eleven thing, a contest was also held featuring all of the U.S towns named Springfield. Basically, each town had to submit a video saying why they should be chosen to host The Simpsons Movie premiere. In the end, Springfield, Vermont won (check out all the submitted videos here). All this talk, I bet you're dying to see the movie already. Well, fear not, we only have to wait two more weeks -- The Simpsons Movie arrives in theaters on July 27.

A Final Trailer and New Poster For 'The Simpsons Movie' Arrive Online

Filed under: Animation », Comedy », Fandom », Trailer Trash », 20th Century Fox », Movie Marketing », Images »

As we all know, the countdown to The Simpsons Movie began a long time ago -- probably about fifteen years ago by some fan estimations. So as we get closer to the holiest of days for Simpsons fans everywhere, a new poster for the film has just hit the net. Fox has managed to keep most of the details of the movie under wraps so far -- that's if you don't count those early screenings. However, the final theatrical trailer is making the rounds as well, providing lots more info regarding the plot of the film --mainly the annihilation of Springfield (through the kind of action-heavy montage you'd find in a Michael Bay trailer) and Homer's complex relationship with a pig (I'm making my prediction now that "Spider Pig" is going to sweep the nation). As for the marketing, it's been pretty inventive, and we still haven't found out which real-life Springfield is the lucky winner to host the premiere.

This is just the latest in an evolution of one-sheets that started with the oh-so-familiar image of Homer's chubby little hand grasping a donut, to some individual character shots, to finally a poster that puts the whole dysfunctional family front and center -- and I couldn't help but think of the original poster for National Lampoon's Vacation. The image does give a few hints to some of the things we have already seen in the teasers; namely that Homer manages to enrage the whole town -- complete with angry mobs carrying torches. Luckily, if there is anyone that can bring the comedy out of an angry mob, it's Groening and company. As you probably know, and are sick to death of hearing about, the film opens on July 27th -- but if you can't wait for a Simpsons fix, you can always pick up one of those limited edition soundtracks that will hit shelves the day before the release.

16 Springfields Compete to Host 'The Simpsons Movie' Premiere

Filed under: Animation », Fandom », Movie Marketing »

If you're a hardcore fan of The Simpsons, then you might want to get ready to book a round-trip ticket ... to Springfield, literally. However, we're not sure which Springfield yet. 20th Century Fox has asked 16 different Springfields (I didn't even know there were that many) from around the country to compete to host the premiere of this summer's animated Simpsons flick, The Simpsons Movie. Here's how the competition will play out: Fox has asked all 16 Springfields to submit films of their community, somehow linking their hometown to the Simpsons TV show.

This could go both ways -- perhaps your Springfield is exactly like the Simpsons' Springfield, but if that's the case, then it also means your hometown is jam-packed with eccentric morons. In the end, who cares -- you get to host the premiere! The winning city and its mayor will also be featured in the film's closing credits; here's hoping that person is a bit more competent than Mayor Quimby. If you happen to live in one of these 16 Springfields (and are also a huge Simpsons fan), make sure you find out who's putting together your video so that your town is in it to win it. The Simpsons Movie arrives in theaters on July 27.

Cinema Postpones "Gang Movie" Stomp the Yard

Filed under: Drama », Sony », Exhibition », Newsstand », Movie Marketing », Politics »

If you live in Springfield, Illinois, you might have to wait until Sunday to see the new dance movie Stomp the Yard. Or you could simply avoid the cinemas operated by Kerasotes Theatres, which has postponed the movie for two days. Unfortunately for those who aren't able or willing to travel, the chain pretty much has a monopoly on the theater business of Springfield. Too bad, since it would be a good idea for people in the city to completely boycott Kerasotes after its CEO's racist assumptions.

Tony Kerasotes originally said that he wouldn't be showing the movie in any of his Springfield theatres, but pressure from the NAACP and members of the community made him change his decision to a two-day postponement. The reason for Kerasotes' first instinct to ban the movie was that he feared gang violence, which he denied had anything to do with race. Recently, at one of the Springfield Kerasotes Theatres, a fight broke out during a showing of Black Christmas, and one teenager was shot. Because most of those involved in that incident are not in custody, Kerasotes assumes a similar event could happen again.
