Why Are Movie Stalkers Always So ... Female?

What a hallowed genre Obsessed is a member of! Right up there with such psycho stalker greats as Play Misty For Me, Fatal Attraction, and The Hand that Rocks the Cradle. If you'd like to remember a few more, Peter did a great list for Valentine's Day ... and would you look at that, 5 out of 7 of those are chicks! Why the persistence of this cinematic archetype? Why don't we ever see psychotic male stalkers beyond Sleeping with the Enemy? Where's Fatal Attraction where a man is screaming, begging not to be ignored?
My theory has always been that we see these stories played out again and again because they're somewhat of a male fantasy. Think about Play Misty For Me, Fatal Attraction, Obsessed, or even the real B-movie variations like Swimfan, The Temp, and The Crush. There's something very flattering and erotic about a woman who can't get enough of you -- a plot point exploited pretty heavily in Play Misty and Fatal Attraction, since both male protagonists really set their stalkers off by ... sleeping with them. If Fatal Dan and Misty Dave had just taken Alex and Evelyn out for a nice dinner and a movie, no sex, would any butcher knives have been wielded? I guess so, given the chaste plotline of Obsessed: just flirting is enough to drive Ali Larter over the edge.

Frankly, anyone who has ever been devoted to anything – be it Firefly, hockey, or U2 – will shift a little uncomfortably in their seats. I know I did. I found myself glancing at my desk and wanting to rip down every bit of fandom that has gathered there over the years – and realizing I should never, ever, joke about marrying various actors in public again. I began to believe the only thing separating me from Tiffany's stalker, Jeffery Deane Turner, is the fact that I lack a mind-control helmet. (This is why I never took more than one psychology class in college – I started fearing that I was schizophrenic or washing my hands more than Howard Hughes.)
Mischa Barton is a Total Stalker

I can think of a lot worse than being stalked by a girl who looked like Mischa Barton. (Like being stalked by a guy who looked like Barton Fink.) Yup, the girl we all remember as playing Marissa Cooper on The O.C. is preparing to show us that hot girls can be stalkers too by signing on to star in the indie thriller Homecoming. What, you've never had a hot girl stalk you? Seriously? You should try on my job for a day -- hot girls are absolutely infatuated with overweight, balding internet film writers. It's insane! But if we can get serious for a moment: Variety tells us the actress will star alongside Matt Long, Jessica Stroup and Michael Landes, while Morgan J. Freeman (Hurricane) will direct off a script from Frank Hannah (The Cooler).
Homecoming will tell the all-too-familiar tale of a former small-town golden boy and his new girlfriend who decide to visit his hometown when -- holy bleeping crap -- they discover his high school sweetheart (Barton) is, like, totally obsessed with the guy still. Variety calls it an "unhealthy obsession," while I say the more the merrier. No word on a production schedule or a release date, but it should be fun to watch the girl from The O.C. go absolutely nutty over a guy. I want her doing bad things. Very bad things. Despite being pretty well known, Barton still has not managed to land a role bigger than "insert random indie title here." Perhaps she's going about her career in the right way, or perhaps she's just not appealing enough for the bigger stuff. What say you?
