Kurt Russell Chills Out About 'Escape from New York' Remake

Filed under: Action », Quentin Tarantino », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

We caught up with Kurt Russell at the Grindhouse press junket over the weekend, and we were able to get the skinny from him on the developing hubbub over the possibility of Gerard Butler playing Snake Plissken in the remake of Escape from New York. The full junket report is coming very soon, but here's a sample:

Question: They've announced that they want to remake The Thing, and your The Thing with John Carpenter is one of the great remakes. What do you think about that, and would you like someone else to go in and play Snake Plissken? "You know, it's been a long time and I've seen a lot of it. They remade one of the Disney movies I was in ... The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes. They took Stargate and made it into the most successful series, they took Backdraft and made that into two television shows that did okay I guess, They're gonna remake The Thing, they talked about remaking Escape from New York. You know what ... whatever, and good on you."

Question: So, you're not worried about it? "I feel like we did what we did, and that's always gonna be there. It'll be there to be compared, I'm sure it will be, they have to do that. My thoughts on it were, as a joke, you know when somebody said that about Gerard Butler playing Snake ... it is interesting to create a role that is iconic, and then have somebody go do that. That's interesting. At the same time, I had a sort of joke response, which is the way look at life, which is 'Oh my god, wait 'til Stuntman Mike (his character in Death Proof) hears about this.' (laughter).

"That's how I feel about! Maybe 30 years from now, someone's gonna do Stuntman Mike, and, well ... I got my version. You know, that's kind of all I think about it, I don't know what else to say."

So, probably not the final word on the whole matter, but it sounds like once he originally blew off some steam about the issue, he's starting to come to terms with it. Not sure he'll be front and center at the premiere for the remake, however.

MGM Greenlights Two New Stargate Movies

Sometime around Columbus Day we talked about potential Stargate SG-1 movies as a swansong for the long-running television series. Then last month, my buddy Chris Ullrich gave you a great update courtesy of Beau Bridges, who confirmed talks of the films, but indicated nothing was official yet. Well, here we are in mid-January, and we now have official confirmation. Fans, you may officially start your (likely to be bittersweet, due to the impending end of the series) rejoicing now -- two movies are indeed coming your way.

Today, MGM officially announced the production plans for two Stargate SG-1 movies titled Stargate: Arc of Truth and Stargate: Continuum. As we suspected back in October, the first film will close the big storyline from the final two seasons, while the second will have an independent plot with new time travel adventures. Expect both to be TV and DVD marketed, with no major big screen releases. With continued rumors of yet another Stargate series, the success of these movies will likely play a major role in the studio's internal debate about the potential for future Stargate properties.

Beau Bridges Talks Stargate Movies

I have to admit that I'm a pretty big fan of the original Stargate film. Sure, there are one or two cringe-worthy moments -- particularly the one where the "mentally challenged" guy tries to run to safety in glorious slo-mo during a firefight but instead, gets blown up. I'm sorry, but that sequence made me chuckle instead of cry. It was just so much unexpected cheese --- almost as if it came from another movie. I know, cynical and jaded, right? Yeah, that's me. Other than that, and one or two minor issues, the film was a solid piece of Sci-Fi / Action filmmaking that I've watched several more times and continue to enjoy.

I found it a little strange that no sequel to the film was ever produced. Maybe it was too hard to get Kurt Russell and James Spader in the same room? For whatever reason, the producers of the film decided that the interests of the story and the fans would better be served on television -- and thus, Stargate SG-1 the TV series was born. After its debut, the series became a monster hit lasting eight seasons so far and spawning a spin-off of its own called Stargate: Atlantis. And that pretty much brings us up to date on the world of Stargate. That is, until actor Beau Bridges recently let slip some details concerning developments in the Stargate world.

According to our buddies over at Coming Soon, Bridges, while at the premiere of Steven Soderberg's The Good German, was asked what's in the future for the long-running Stargate SG-1 series. His answer: movies. According to Bridges: "They're talking about doing a couple of movies. I haven't actually signed on the dotted line, but there is talk about it." As you may know, Bridges plays Major General Hank Landry on Stargate SG-1, so it makes sense that he would probably know at least some details concerning any future theatrical plans for the current series. According to Bridges, he hasn't actually seen a script yet but when asked if the scripts were finished, he said: "Yes, I think they must be. Yes." So Stargate fans, if you've been waiting for the franchise's glorious return to the silver screen, you just may get you wish.

Stargate SG-1 Gets Movie Swansong

Although I never got into Stargate SG-1 (despite a strong interest, I just never managed to watch enough of the show to get caught up), I really enjoy it's existence. There is something nice about knowing there is a popular, long-running sci-fi show on television, and I could always think "maybe I'll start watching next season." Unfortunately, as we all know, my "next season" plans are no good any longer, as the show is finishing up a ten year (wow, ten years?) run and will not have a "next season" after this spring. Oh well, there are always DVDs.

However, fans will get one final treat according to the Sci Fi Channel's website, as MGM has okayed funds to bring about two low to mid-budget films, most likely in direct-to-DVD form. Essentially, a small budget on direct-to-DVD means they'll be able to make two extra-long episodes on DVD to wrap up the series in fine fashion. According to producer Brad Wright, the first film will wrap up loose ends and such, while the second will be a "time travel" flick of some variety. The cast is very excited for both projects. It is nice to see a long-running show get a proper, well-planned goodbye, instead of a sudden cancellation. Maybe I'll get into it next year ...

More Stargate -- And Not the MacGyver Kind

In the middle of what was surely a really boring roundtable about his sure-to-be really boring movie Flyboys (James Franco, I love you, but you can't act), producer Dean Devlin dropped some news that is sure to have Stargate's surprisingly large fandom doing little alternate world dances of joy. Sort of confirming earlier rumors, Devlin said that Stargate was always viewed by its creators as the opening of a trilogy, but the studio's focus back in 1994 was on the TV series, so the sequels fell by the wayside. Now that the series has been so successful and there's been some turnover at MGM, though, the studio's interest in more movies has been renewed.

Interestingly, Devlin says that the film's stars (Kurt Russell and James Spader) and director (Roland Emmerich) remain interested in doing the sequels -- and claims that Stargate 2 was always supposed to take place 12 years after the first one, so the age of the actors wouldn't be a problem. Well, isn't that a nice bit of spin luck! Though no details are available on the actually production of the possible sequels, Devlin assured reporters that any further Stargate films would develop based on the story in the original, and would be entirely independent of the series lore.

A New Stargate Movie?

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Deals », Fandom », Scripts », Remakes and Sequels »

Stargate is probably the most successful science-fiction franchise to run on television outside of the Star Trek juggernaut (which has stumbled of late, but still easily holds the throne based on past work). Heck, SG-1 is the longest running sci-fi show to ever grace television, despite a major channel a few years ago. And it has no intentions of slow down anytime soon. Co-executive producer Brad Wright recently chatted with Sci Fi Wire about the behemoth he has created, and promised the franchise still has room to grow. Wright says Stargate is the second biggest property for MGM Studios (behind Bond, of course), and he's sure MGM will want another Stargate film sometime in the future. He also suggested potential for a third series, saying "I know there will be a movie made. I know there will likely be another series made, whether I make it or not."

While I've never been a dedicated fan of Stargate, I enjoy it in principle and I've always been impressed with what I've seen of it. It captures the grandiose storytelling essence which so many generic sci-fi/fantasy stories often find themselves lacking these days ... the same epic feel which Star Trek desperately needs to rediscover. If the darn thing we're so stinking long by now, I'd try to find time to sit down and catch up via TV on DVD.

A Dog's Breakfast

It seems that acting isn't the only skill that David Hewlett (Stargate Atlantis) possesses. Like many others in his profession, Dave is attempting to make the jump from actor to writer/director, and try out the view from the other side of the lens. To that end, David has written and directed his first feature film, titled A Dog's Breakfast, which will star several of his Stargate companions, as well as his sister, actress Kate Hewlett, who will be involved on some level. Much of the crew involved in shooting and production were also lifted from Hewlett's Stargate contacts.

The story is that of a pair of siblings named Patrick and Marilyn, who "are driven over the edge when Marilyn brings home her new TV-star fiance from the space soap opera Starcrossed." Patrick will apparently go to drastic lengths to split the couple. David Hewlett has confessed that at least part of the story is autobiographical:  "Let's just say that it's based on a true story," was his response in an email interview.

Once the film is finished and polished, distribution shopping will begin in the proud tradition of independent movie makers. David hopes to have it finished by the end of February, at which point he will begin sending it out to festivals and the like.
